I know this doesn't solve the problem, but after the mother ignored me, I probably would have slapped the mom across her face and said "how do you like it?"

OMG! That's one of the most awful things I have heard! I don't know how you handled yourself so well! I probably would have smacked him back! Little *******! And what the hell, if my child hit a stranger's BABY I'd be mortified and apologizing left and right, even if I didn't speak the language! Remorse and embarrassment can be expressed regardless of language barriers

i think i would've smacked the kid back, as a reflex! i know, it's immature, but he deserves it!! or pinch his ears.. or kick him... i dunno, i don't think i could've sucked it up.

i dont even know what to say. your poor lil baby, he must have been so scared. what kind of kid goes up to a lil baby and slaps him>!!! where did he learn to do that, is what i want to know. you kept your calm, thats all you can do, set an example for your son. good job mommy.

I think you handled yourself calmly and did the right thing, but I am just so so SO angry on your behalf and so upset for your little boy ... I would have probably lost my cool (as so many others have said here) and would have been tempted to slap the mother myself but I think you handled it the only way you could at that moment..

OMG...I would feel the same way you do...violated. You were just minding your own business when a complete stranger came up to your son and smacked him...you actually kept cooler than I think I would have...I would have followed her and demanded an apology! Sad, the little boy has NO manners...and they learn from their parents!!

I would be upset too - I am thinking that the 3 yr old boy probably has some emotional problems - he may be a brat, but he may have a whole slew of other things going on as well - sure sounds like it - to go up to a strange baby and do it, and then to speak to an adult that way when being yelled at....

Thank you. I hate though that my first thoughts are "what a terrible kid, what a brat". But since i've been home its been replaying in my head and i really think the child is taught that...he is probably hit and screamed at...the mother didn't care, or she didn't understand what just happened and ignored me...at any rate, it stinks.
OK. I would have yelled at the mother and called the police. I know the police cannot really do anything in this situation. It just might scare the mother enough to care.
OR
I would have just walked up to the mother, said you child did this to my 6 month old and smacked her (OK, I would not have REALLY done this, but I would be thinking about it).

me too, I had to reread that too  and  about smacking the mom, some moms need that
Im so sorry this happened. and the fact that the mom ignored you AND did nothing is completely NOT acceptable.
I would have spoken to her in whatever language she needed.
I have toddlers and know they can misbehave, but to smack a stranger, and a baby ???
I would have stopped my son RIGHT in his tracks if he even came NEAR a baby with an attempt at a smack.
That's just insane and outrageous

And i agree with the above...and that is all I wanted, for the mother to acknowledge her son did something awful to my child..at least johnny got over it a lot faster than i did!! I retold the story to my husband before to show him exactly what happened and cried again! Lol. What the heck am I going to do if a bully ever does anything?? I will have to be committed. That is why I refuse to raise a brat, it just can't happen!
