Stomach Virus-When to see the doctor

My 2 1/2 year old has the stomach virus, started yesterday evening. Has had continued vomiting and diarrhea since then, so almost 24 hours. He is interested in drinking stuff, but can never keep anything down. Have tried some pedialyte. Basically he's just laying down and sleeping all day. Can't tell if he's peeing because of the diarrhea. I know there isn't much you can do for the stomach virus, but is there a point when you should get the doctor involved?

You need to watch him closely. A child can go from OK to dehydrated VERY quickly with a virus. This isn't to scare you, just something to watch for.

The most tell tale signs of needing to go to the hospital/doctor are things like looking at his tongue/mouth area...it should be wet. If his tongue is dry and whitish looking, he is dehydrating. His eyes will look dull (they should be shiny) and usually when someone dehydrates they run a fever but not always.

Is he still in diapers? If so, hold the diaper up to the light...you should be able to see if it contains urine or not. I would have him eat ice chips/small popsicles a little at a time..anything to get fluid in.

A friends son became dehydrated very quickly with this bug. He spent 2 days in the hospital getting iv fluids and being monitored. I am usually REALLY laid back but I know how nasty this can be.
