stopping for school bus
So around the time I'm getting on Rt 9 (I'm in NJ BTW ) there's sometimes a yellow school bus stopping to pick up kids. There is a median in the section, but where the bus stops there's no median b/c it's on a corner.
I've only noticed a few times pple stop their car for the bus on the other side. Today I stopped and other cars went around me. What rule is there that you don't stop for a school bus? I thought you always have to stop

Re: stopping for school bus
As far as I know it's the law to stop on both sides of the road for a school bus.
They were cracking down out here on the island a few months ago and ticketed a lot of drivers for not stopping.

Re: stopping for school bus
I just tok the online defensive drivers course last month and it reiterated (in NY at least) that even when the road is divided you must stop if the bus has it's flashing lights on.

Even if there is a median, you must stop in both directions when the red lights are flashing.

Re: stopping for school bus
I was taught that even if there's a median with a guardrail you are still required to stop.

Re: stopping for school bus
You always have to stop. Some people unfortunately do not obey this rule/law. On my way to work, there are a lot of schools, so I deal with this every day. It amazes me the amount of people who either don't stop or beep behind the person who is stopped.

Re: stopping for school bus
The people who don't stop are jerkoffs IMO. Seriously, are you so damn in a hurry you can't stop for 30 seconds!!?? This makes me SO ANGRY...because it's the LAW that they should stop. Even if it wasn't the law, it's just common courtesy.
A friend of mine in HS was crossing the street to catch the bus, when some @sshole who was in a hurry went around the stopped school bus. In that one instant, his life was changed forever when the jerk hit him. My friend wound up having a traumatic brain injury that left him partially paralyzed on his left side, a piece of his brain was removed, and he spent his junior year of HS in various hospitals and rehab centers trying to re-learn how to speak, walk, and feed himself. His football career....over. His passion for playing the piano and writing music....gone.
The SOB who hit him just got a simple ticket over the incident, no jail time, because my friend survived the accident and didn't die. He made a great recovery, despite all this, and is now a teacher. But it took him MUCH longer and he still struggles at times even today, with issues from the accident, 14 years later.
So anyone who doesn't stop - please re-think this and ALWAYS stop for a stopped school bus.

Re: stopping for school bus
I believe in NJ if there is a median, you do not have to stop but reduce speed.
I'm going by this section of the law: 39:4-128.1. School buses stopped for children; duty of motorists; duty of bus driver; violations; revocation of license
1. On highways having roadways not divided by safety islands or physical traffic separation installations, the driver of a vehicle approaching or overtaking a bus, which is being used solely for the transportation of children to or from school or a summer day camp or any school connected activity and which has stopped for the purpose of receiving or discharging any child, shall stop such vehicle not less than 25 feet from such school bus and keep such vehicle stationary until such child has entered said bus or has alighted and reached the side of such highway and until a flashing red light is no longer exhibited by the bus; provided, such bus is designated as a school bus by one sign on the front and one sign on the rear, with each letter on such signs at least four inches in height.
On highways having dual or multiple roadways separated by safety islands or physical traffic separation installations, the driver of avehicle overtaking a school bus, which has stopped for the purpose of receiving or discharging any child, shall stop such vehicle not less than 25 feet from such school bus and keep such vehicle stationary until such child has entered said bus or has alighted and reached the side of the highway and until a flashing red light is no longer exhibited by the bus.
On highways having dual or multiple roadways separated by safety islands or physical traffic separation installations, the driver of a vehicle on another roadway approaching a school bus, which has stopped for the purpose of receiving or discharging any child, shall reduce the speed of his vehicle to not more than 10 miles per hour and shall not resume normal speed until the vehicle has passed the bus and has passed any child who may have alighted there from or be about to enter said bus.
