Strange Question.. If you have a dog, and like to drink alchohol..

We have two sets of couple friends that we love to sit around and drink beers and shoot the sh-t with.

It used to be that we all lived nearby but thats not the case. We moved about 35 miles from them into a house with two extra rooms that we have made into guest bedrooms.

Both couples recently got dogs.

We always want to invite them over and relive "old times", have some drinks and stay over, but we know that the dogs will become an issue. It's always a bummer for someone to have to be a DD because then they have to put up with our sloppy butts until its time to leave.

My question to dog owners is.. how do you deal with this? Do you put your dog in a kennel? Leave it alone over night?

I know nothing about dogs and how this works...

If I'm not invited w/ my dog, then I ususally bring her to my parents house.

Would you have them over w/ their pets?

Probably not. We just got some hardwood floors that are pretty easily scratchable Chat Icon And last time we went over one of their houses the dogs were peeing all over the place because they were over-hyper and excited to meet each other, so I can't imagine DH would be too thrilled about that.

Is it rude to get like a child gate up and keep the dogs in a separate, less easily damageable room? I dont want to say "bring your dog over and store it in a crate" because that is obnoxious and cruel, obviously.. but I didn't know if there was a compromise?

I don't think that's rude at all.
We actually have a baby gate for that reason.

But if I was partying at a friend's house, I would rather leave the dog w/ my parents. Less to worry about and I can enjoy myself.

Re: Strange Question.. If you have a dog, and like to drink alchohol..

The dogs would likely be very annoying if left in a strange room, strange house gated away from everyone.

I don't think most people would expect you invite their dog. I always bring my dog to my mom's if I want my freedom. Most people would not kennel their dog to go hang at a friend's house one night. They would either enlist a family member or bring teh dog (if allowed) or not go at all.

Sometimes we don't do things b/c we don't want to bother family members. And for us that works b/c we chose to have pets and know that they are our priority this point in time. And I don't know anyone that leaves their dog alone overnight...most dog owners don't do that b/c dogs are VERY needy overall. Not like cats.

Re: Strange Question.. If you have a dog, and like to drink alchohol..

I own three dogs and I would never leave them alone overnight...and I most definately would not kennel them for a night out with friends.

If I was invited somewhere to go overnight and the dogs where not welcome, I would have to decline. We live OOS; so no near by family to doggie sit; and all of our friends are in the same circle, so I really couldn't get a friend to watch the dogs, since they would most llikely be hanging out too.

Although recently we went to a friends lakehouse a few weeks ago for a night and a friend did agree to stay with the doggies.

This is what we do. Even if we are having lots of people over for a party Rudy goes to my parents.

actually - if i didnt work so much and wasnt gone for long periods of time, maybe I would leave the dog alone for 1 night. Similar to a work day. Maybe leave at 7 at night and wake up extra early to get home by like 7 (if then I was going to be home for the rest of the day with my dog) But that would be rare that I would do something like that

We do the same thing. My BFF lives about 25-30 min away from us and she has a pit and a chiuaua, so when we go there our dogs are always invited. But when we go somewhere else if our dogs are not invited they go to my parents house for a sleepover with grandma and grandpa.

Re: Strange Question.. If you have a dog, and like to drink alchohol..

If you are welcoming a dog into your home then yes, I think it is okay to gate the dog into a room but not with other dogs that it does not live with full time. My dog gets along okay with most other dogs but there is sometimes a moment or two where they test each others' wills. I have never seen this amount to injury or anything but you never know. I insist on supervising his interaction with other dogs. I would not leave them alone in a room. Also, even if you gate the dog into another room, they have to pass through your house no matter what. Oh, have old towels handy and if it is damp outside people can wipe their dogs paws. Most dogs will let their owners do that.

My parents are usually willing to watch our dog unless they have other plans of their own.

If we are going somewhere near my parents house we leave the dog there. In times of desparation I'll ask my neighbor to walk the dog at night but we still always come home.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't stay over unless he was with my parents or we could bring him.

Re: Strange Question.. If you have a dog, and like to drink alchohol..

We've left our dogs alone overnight twice in the past calendar year. We'd really rather not, but we don't have family in the area to watch them or anyone to leave them with.

If we have to leave them, we'll spend lots of time with them that day before we leave, and take them for a long walk or jog so they'll be nice and tired when we leave. They have a doggie door, so bathroom issues aren't a concern. And we get up early the next morning to head home to them.

If it was more than one night, I wouldn't do it, but it's worked out fine for us so far.
