Straw sippy cup

At what age do you start to introduce the straw sippy cup? DS will be 6 months soon and wanted to start introducing it with meal time. Is this too early? How do I go about introducing the straw cup?

we started at 6 months with the straw it took a week or two of just giving it to him and holding it for him and showing him to lift to his mouth and he figured it out. The tricky part is the straw valve and once he did it on accident and was able to get liquid he kept on doing it.

Landon didn't drink from a straw til a year old! He didn't understand the concept, he would tilt the cup as if the straw was a spout. He drank from a soft spout sippy cup from 6 months old.

DD used a straw cup from 6 mths on. she never liked the regular sippy cup, always prefered the straw which was fine with me.

we started around 6 months but it took a while for DS to get it. even now if i am not consistent with it he forgets.

he prefers the spout cups and regular cups anyway so we usually use those.

I just gave DS the cup with every meal. I put it up to his mouth the first few times, then he would put the straw in his mouth by himself a few times, but didn't drink. After about two weeks, he finally figured out what to do with the straw. Just keep offering it, and try not to get frustrated when he doesn't want it. Good luck!

Until DC "gets it" - I would put water IF DC drinks water. Learning to use cups and you figuring out which ones leak can be a messy experience.

Some DC's only drink milk/formula - so giving them water in the cup wouldn't intice them to drink.

DS was about 18 mos before he used a real straw - then we got him some straw sippy cups

I don't remember the age, but DD figured out how to drink from a straw cup as soon as she realized that she could crawl to DS's cup and steal his juice!
