Suffolk Girls -- Recc your town & what you like/dislike about it!
my main concern is taxes..since they increase each year it seems ... but obviously when buying a home, you want to live in a nice area.
so what do you like/dislike about your suffolk town?
i've lived in nesconset, selden, lake ronkonkoma, and lake grove.
i wasn't too keen on selden only because of the traffic near where I lived, but nothing too bad.

I live in Ridge/Lake Panamoka I love it here because its rural and a little bit like a step back in time. Its very affordable compared to other LI areas. Riverhead is 7-10 minutes away and offers good shopping. Its pretty easy getting to the LIE or Sunrise via William Floyd Pkwy. Its very close to the beautiful North Fork and LI Sound beaches. We have a great library. Unbelievable wildlife and access to trails and parks. People here are very friendly, down to earth, not showy at all. we have a great sense of community, lots of events. And the biggest reason I love it here is the private, freshwater lake owned by my neighborhood.

I grew up in Kings Park, which is BY FAR my favorite place in the world. It has a very small town, every one knows everyone feel to it. Like youll walk into a local place and see 12 people you know, a lot of the business owners actually know the people in the community by name. Love its proximity to the water and the schools.
Im in Smithtown now, and while its very nice and I have no complaints, I miss the small town feeling.

I also grew up in Kings Park and live there now (and my mom teaches in the school district and my parents are still here - I guess that makes me a townie!).
As a teenager I hated it because everyone knew everyone else and you couldn't get away with anything. Of course that is part of why I wanted to come back when it came time to buy my own house!

i grew up in babylon village. the taxes are very high....but its a nice village w/ small schools. I couldnt afford to stay there, we bought in Islip terrace. Its fine, lots of kids, good schools. not very scenic, but its refreshing to see kids play in the neighborhood. Its close to highway/parkway. taxes arent too low, but lower than bab.

I grew up in Huntington and felt the same way that the Kings Park girls feel too! That everyone knew each other...hell, I can't even go see my mom without bumping into someone somewhere that I know! I kinda love that though!
Alot of my childhood friends bought there, I needed off the train line and Nassau so I went south!
The taxes are still pretty affordable there...my mom pays around 7.

I grew up in Northport and like it. Loved being near the water and the schools were great...I didnt want to live there for a few reasons......one felt like it was just all the people from HS still there and I needed a change and the prices were too high for our first home. Taxes are reasonable there though cause of the LIPA plant.
We are in Lindenhurst now but moving to Farmingdale next month.

I loved growing up in Northport as well. It's far from the city if commuting is an issue but the school taxes are really, really, really low because of LIPA. If you chose a house outside of the Village but still in the Npt SD, you'll get a great deal on taxes!!

I live in Kings Park now. I don't feel a part of the "small town". Maybe because I didn't grow up here, maybe because my kids aren't in school yet. Maybe because I usually leave KP for restaurants, shopping, etc.
I do love the proximity to the parkway, to trails and to the beaches.
Once youre there long enough, its a very "townie" town, so as a long time resident.....youll eventually know what we mean.

I agree. I also think it will change dramatically once your kids are in school. The schools are so small that you will see the same parents over and over again at every event. I don't have kids yet so I don't really know anyone "new" in KP, but I know everyone who works at the dry cleaner, and the pizza place, and always bump into those I knew in HS and/or their parents who still live in town. I don't think I have ever gone for a mani/pedi without running into at LEAST two people I know or recognize!

Back in college, I worked at the Green Room as a waitress and I called in sick one day and later that day, I received no less than 4 calls from people who went into the restaurant that day and noticed I wasnt there to call me to see if I was OK, LOL.

We live in Patchogue, it's gross. Thank God we don't have children, the school district is in the toilet.
