Swine Flu?

I was in my company's health center today and there was an employee in a room being sent home with suspected swine flu.

All of the staff were masked as well as the employee.

I asked for a mask. They wouldn't give me one. I got out of there asap.

It could be anything but they are taking precautions. I hope it's not but she was so scared and was crying.Chat Icon

I know about 10 people in the past week with " suspected" swine flu. They dont even test kids anymore because so many parents are overreacting.

Re: Swine Flu?

Just make sure you wash and purell your hands, don't touch your eyes, mouth etc.
A mask really won't help you anyway...

The Swine flu has not shown to be any more dangerous than the seasonal flu. If someone in your office possibly has the flu, just react the same way you would if you found out they had the regular flu. This hysteria is ridiculous. Unless you have underlying medical conditions, this is not a reason to panic.

Re: Swine Flu?

I do have underlying medical conditions and the swine flu is a bigger problem because there is no vaccine.

It's something to take seriously. I have been vaccinated for the strains that are known but not for the swine flu.

If I get sick it could be catastrophic. That's why I get vaccinated.

ITA with you!!! People say it is no big deal but for those of us who are pregnant, have pre-existing conditions, or have newborns it IS a big deal. There is no vaccine and we have not built up any immunity to this throughout the years. In addition, during regular flu season the segment of the population most affected is different.

ITA! People don't realize that "underlying medical conditions" are basically EVERYTHING - in fact, I think I read an article that said 1 in 3 people have some sort of "underlying medical condition" as it is defined in this context.

And, maybe for that poster it isn't that serious but, I am pregnant and have a toddler at home and since already two people in each category have died in the past MONTH in those groups it is pretty serious to me.

This isn't even true at ALL. They are testing kids MORE now b/c kids are DYING.

A close family member is a ped and not only are they testing kids but they are putting the young ones on Tamiflu immediately.

And, if its not so dangerous than why have all the hospitals restricted their vistor policies? Do they ever do this during regular flu season? Not that I've seen.

I feel like it is the people who are not taking it seriously that are making it more dangerous for the rest of us.

Wow...relax.
My cousin is a ped...she said they are not testing most of the kids that come in. My nephew had 104 fever over the weekend...they didnt test him.
Kids with other medical conditions have passed away....The way you say it...KIDS ARE DYING...dont you think thats a little much?
No one is making it dangerous for the rest of us. People are doing what doctors tell them to do, and thats it. Thats all you can do.
People need to relax. Take the proper precautions and calm down.

I was correcting you b/c what you said was wrong. And, now you just corrected it. You said they are not testing children any more and now you are saying most of the kids at your cousin's ped's office. Maybe they didn't test your nephew b/c his other symptoms were not conistent with the flu? I didn't say they were testing every kid.

And, no, I don't think its much. I didn't see where they said the toddlers that have died had underlying conditions and even then - what were they? Didn't the 6th grade girl that died - her underlying condition was that she was fat - I mean, com eon.

And, no, people are not all taking precautions. Many people are going to work sick and out in public b/c they are not realizing how sick this flu is for some people.

Finally, I am not altering my life over this but, I am certainly not relaxed over it b/c if my son or I were to get it right now it would be a VERY big deal for us.

How many other toddlers died? More than during a normal flu season?
The amount of people who have passed away is not cause for alarm. And sorry, but I think you ARE a bit much. As so are the people that overreact like you.

Listen - you are entitled to your opinion but, your situation is obviously very different from mine. Maybe if you were pregnant with a child under 2 at home as well you would feel differently. And, trust me, you do not know unless you are in the situation.

I just don't like when people who do not have all the facts correct challenge other people's feelings. You don't know me so you don't know at all how I am in every day life. And, honestly, i think there would be something wrong with me if I wasn't being over cautious about this.

That said - I am done with this thread. I was just trying to offer some support for the original poster who was validly trying to express her concern only to be told what she was worried about was "nothing."

I have to say it bothers me a bit. I am currently ttcing and if I happen to get pregnant, I will worry. Because it is not only me that I have to worry about.

I take all the normal precautions, wash my hands, stay awa from sick people, don't touch my eyes, nose, mouth. But I still worry and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

Less than 200 people worldwide have died from this strain of the flu.

Of the people that have died I believe 3/4 lived in Mexico or had recently visited Mexico.

Why all they hype over this when bird flu was talked about as something only happening in Asia and mad cow as a European ailment?

Of course people over react. People do about every little thing. I remember SARS and the avian flu "outbreaks". Unfortunately not only is this spreading faster, but it really is in our own backyard. No one knows if it will mutate. No one really knows what will become of it. Maybe when school is out the spreading will slow.

Because people are dramatic, and would rather make it seem like children all over are dying.

Re: Swine Flu?

From what I have heard on the news, the masks aren't even really protecting people from getting the swine flu. Are you sure it couldnt ahve been something else they were concerned about?

I am 7 mo. pregnant and have a 2 yr. old at home. I am very concerned about not only the swine flu, but the flu that is going around as well. Many people I know have had the flu but it has turned out to be the regular seasonal flu.

My friend is the charge nurse at St. Francis on the flu floor and while she said it isn't any more dangerout than the regular seasonal flu and seems to be very mild, it seems to be much more contagious and is resilient to the warm weather where most strands of flu cant survive.

I make sure to wash my hands constantly and the same with DS. My ped. said the purell stuff doesnt even kill the flu virus...good, old hand washing with soap and water is the best thing.

I think what people are curious about, myself included, is how many people have been diagnosed witht he swine flu and how many people have died VS. how many people get the regular seasonal flu and how many people usually die from that.

I'm not sure the statistics would even be accurate b/c it seems some dr's are not even testing for the swine flu...just treating flu symptoms as the regular flu.

Re: Swine Flu?

All you can do is take precautions the best you can.... other than that, its out of our control.

I wash my hands CONSTANTLY and am a huge germ nut.... in the meantime, I had a probable case of swine all of last week!

You do what you can and hope for the best....... you can't let it take over your life and stay quarantined at home out of fear. Just be careful and if you do get sick, see the dr RIGHT AWAY! I got sick and went to my dr the very next day!

Good luck, be well!

I find the whole thing very scary and frustrating because everyone's right. It is something to worry about. For all of the reasons said. But, worrying won't help, an dneither will much else if the pandemic continues to grow instead of being stemmed. It's just horrrible. i worry even though I know it won't do any good. Chat Icon

Re: Swine Flu?

I told my doc today about it and he told me my health center should have masked everyone in the immediate area. I got in and got out. I went to the bathroom after and washed my hands.

I did everything I had to do to protect myself. I feel badly for that woman who was so scared and so sick. She was a mess and it was real. Whether it's the swine flu or otherwise she was very upset. Her co-worker came down to tell her not to worry about work and to go take care of herself. She had been sick all weekend and came to work.

My gf is an ER nurse and she said they are overrun with people who may have the flu, swine or otherwise. Precautions are being taken and anyone who is thought to have it gets masked. It's airborne as well.

A few of my kids had the flu, as did a colleague. My colleague said that they would not confirm it as swine.

It seems that I now have the flu too. My DD is going to stay with my mom tomorrow till I am well. She is only two. I have asthma and I get the regular flu shot religiously. I'm a little worried.
