Swine flu outbreak in Mexico and US *UPDATE* confirmed in Queens
I am freaking out about this!!
(CNN) -- U.S. health officials expressed concern Friday that a swine flu virus that has infected eight people in the United States matches samples of a virus that has killed at least 68 people in Mexico.
U.S. health experts also are concerned because more than 1,000 people have fallen ill in Mexico City in a short period of time.
"This situation has been developing quickly," said acting CDC director Richard Besser. "This is something we are worried about."
New York health officials announced Friday they are testing about 75 students at a Queens school for swine flu after the students exhibited flu-like symptoms this week.

it MAY be swine flu but they are sending the samples to the CDC in Atlanta. Also, according to something I have read all the cases in NY have been relatively mild and no one has gone to the hospital for it. Except for the mutation from pig to human to human transmission it seems like a normal flu (but Im not a doc!)

Swine flu confirmed in NYC high school students
NEW YORK – New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed that students at a city high school were infected with swine flu.
New York officials previously had said they were eight "probable" cases, but tests later confirmed that it was indeed swine flu. Bloomberg stressed that the cases were mild and many are recovering.

It's the flu. If you get it there is Tamiflu or the other one that starts with an R. It has been effecting the people in the US as a MILD case of the flu. No one has died in the US. Even the cases in Mexico they are not 100% sure the 81 people they claim have died from it have died from swine flu or something different. Just wash your hands and avoid people coughing in your face!

Re: Swine flu outbreak in Mexico and US *UPDATE* confirmed in Queens
I'm a teacher at Prep. It is confirmed that the students do have swine flu. There are no preventive medicines or at least the communicable disease doctor I spoke to this morning said so. (Im pregnant so I've been on the phone all morning with people from everywhere getting answers.) The only real preventive things you can do is the normal things for flu - wash hands, etc. As soon as anyone exhibits any symptoms which are listed on the cdc, dept of health website and nyc dept of health website, you should see a doctor.

Had the 8 students ALL gone to Mexico? Why is the school only closing for one day?
Any other scoop you have for us would be great and being that you are pg, what is your plan, what are they suggesting?

I agree. People need to relax. If you start exhibiting flu symptoms, see your doctor. The odds of any one dying from this if they get medical attention is pretty slim. Take care of your self and don't stress. Stressing makes you more prone to illness.

It's just another strand of the flu, but it has a name. People really are getting to rilled up about this. Yes it's bad in MEXICO, but here it is just like every other flu. People are starting to get to upset, and in part, it's the media's fault.
