Re: Swine flu outbreak in Mexico and US *UPDATE* confirmed in Queens
I'm in AZ, and while they are saying there are no reported cases of it here, the staff at the Retirement Community I work at (including myself) has been battling something wicked. We've had a "cold/cough" thing that just hangs on. It's awful. Don't know if it's that or not. I'm not too concerned about it though. The only thing that DOES worry me is like I said, I work at a retirement community. If this gets into my residents, it's not going to be pretty. The biggest issue I feel, at least with my company, is we get really no sick time. Meaning, if you get sick, you have to use TWO consecutive vacation days before they let you take a sick day. Well we get 9 days total a year for vacation/personal time. Guess how many people are taking sick days when they get this? Yup, NONE. We're all coming in anyway. It's things like this that go a long way in spreading viruses.

It's not THAT bad... This isn't the bubonic plague people...
Seriously. Everybody needs to chill out. Stressing only makes you more open to getting sick anyway.

Re: Swine flu outbreak in Mexico and US *UPDATE* confirmed in Queens
I posted this on the Parenting thread, but figured I'd contribute here as well.
I really feel like the media is REALLY blowing this out of proportion. I mean, I was watching the news earlier and they showed a map with the whole country of Canada highlighted. There are SIX confirmed cases- but hey, it looks better to just highlight the whole damned country.
I have to say I am NOT worried. Considering the *regular* flu kills THOUSANDS every year, I'm not sure why this is making such news other than it has a name. It's been reported that the US cases confirmed are considered very mild. The preventaive measures and treatment are exactly the same as *regular* flu.
I mean even with the reports that the *regular* flu is deadly, there are many people who still choose not to get the flu shot every year- even those with little babies at home who can't be vaccinated. So I figure- keep doing whatever it is you're doing to protect yourselves during flu season and you'll be fine.

It's the flu. If you get it there is Tamiflu or the other one that starts with an R. It has been effecting the people in the US as a MILD case of the flu. No one has died in the US. Even the cases in Mexico they are not 100% sure the 81 people they claim have died from it have died from swine flu or something different. Just wash your hands and avoid people coughing in your face!
I agree. People need to relax. If you start exhibiting flu symptoms, see your doctor. The odds of any one dying from this if they get medical attention is pretty slim. Take care of your self and don't stress. Stressing makes you more prone to illness.
I agree. You also have to keep in mind it is possible more people are dying from it in Mexico b/c they dont have access to hospital and medical facilities like we do.
ETA: This last article I just read shows Mexico is doing a horrible job dealing with the outbreak. They dont even know if the people who died, died from the swine flu. People are not getting adequate medical attention.
