What are the symptoms of this?

From the CDC: The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

I'm a teacher at Prep. It is confirmed that the students do have swine flu. There are no preventive medicines or at least the communicable disease doctor I spoke to this morning said so. (Im pregnant so I've been on the phone all morning with people from everywhere getting answers.) The only real preventive things you can do is the normal things for flu - wash hands, etc. As soon as anyone exhibits any symptoms which are listed on the cdc, dept of health website and nyc dept of health website, you should see a doctor.

Had the 8 students ALL gone to Mexico? Why is the school only closing for one day?

Any other scoop you have for us would be great and being that you are pg, what is your plan, what are they suggesting?Chat Icon Chat Icon

The school is actually closed Monday and Tuesday. They are taking direction from the dept of health. There is no word that the 8 students that are confirmed are the students that went to Mexico. We had a lot of students travel abroad during spring recess. I highly doubt they are going to release the names of the students for confidentiality reasons. All other info is online and being reported on the news.

Re: Swine flu outbreak in Mexico and US *UPDATE* confirmed in Queens

it's fairly concerning... especially if people with immune deficiencies (elderly, people on certain medications that depress the immune system, pregnant women, and young kids) catch it.

the reason why it's worse than a 'regular flu' is that virtually all of us display some natural immunity to human flu strains becuase our systems have 'seen them before'.... the swine flu is completely novel... so it would be a wicked flu.... (then again, after the first time a person has caught it, it would pose no more elevated risk than any other flu strain)

I'm glad we have no reason to go to NYC in the near future!!!! I hope to stay somewhat in social isolation until this outbreak blows over.....

I live right by Prep. I was actually planning to go on vacation to Mexico this summer, but I'm thinking that maybe I should change my plans Chat Icon

well, even if there wasn't a flu epidemic down there.... I wouldn't go right now becuase of the massive drug wars.... I think the US gov't even issued a notice advising we don't go down there right now Chat Icon the gov't pretty much has lost control of a large portion of the country

Exactly. There are reported cases in 5 different states so there's no reason to believe that the swine flu is confined to NYC. Like you, I will be extra cautious about what I touch, washing my hands, not touching my face, etc.

I am so worried about this whole situationChat Icon

Me too

What can we do?Chat Icon

I am super nervous too. I dont even kno what can be done...like is there a "cure" for this flu? Can antibiotics do anything? It freaks me out when I hear in Mexico pple were dying from it..

What we all can do is start if you haven't already, taking steps to strenghten your immune system! I take Nutriferon. It really is so important even now in these times.

Where?

I was reading that there was a recent outbreak of something similar in a school in Amityville within the last few weeks. So maybe it has been around here and could it have been they thought it was the regular flu, and we now find out it's this?

I heard this earlier this morning as well. They didn't say where but they mentioned that many St. Francis Prep students live in Nassau.

I'm not too worried about this -- as long as the infection continues to be fully treatable with antiviral meds, at least. If/when the virus mutates, then I'll start to get concerned...

What is worrisome is infants under 1 cannot take the antiviral drug. So that is what is worrying me greatly, with a 5 mth old of my own and a 2 mth old nephew.Chat Icon

I think you kind of have to be a little scared to be honest.

Fear will force people to do the right thing in a way.

Ive always believed in that. In this day in age, you cant truly believe ANYTHING you hear from the media, good or bad.

I am scared...and I will take precautions because you just dont know.

ITA, when people take things nonchalantly they get lax.

As I said above...it is scary, esp for infants who cannot take antivirals. So everyone NEEDS to take this seriously and do their part.
