Swine flu recoup time... WWYD
I talked to my SIL today and my niece has the flu. They did not check to see if it was the swine flu. They just prescribed tamiflu for her and them.
I know thanksgiving is a week away, but should i be nervous about them coming to my house for it?
Jacen did get the H1N1 shot as well as the regular flu shot, but he gets everything, as do I. I did not get any shots for myself.
what do you think?

Re: Swine flu recoup time... WWYD
We are going through the same exact thing over here also. My niece just found out today that she has the swine flu. I am personally not going to Thanksgiving anymore - not because of her having the swine, but more for the fact that I don't want to take the risks with a newborn baby.
If it was just us and Jack I would still be going to Thanksgiving.
Our ped told her that once the fever breaks she can go back to school (even if that was tomorrow, but they are keeping her home until at least Monday)
ETA: I am having Christmas and I will tell you exactly what I'm doing (since I'm crazy and already thinking about this)
I am limiting the amount of toys that are out and about. The kids will only have the big things to play with (the kitchen)
After everyone leaves I will Lysol the entire house. I will also open all the windows, and spray all of the toys down.
I know - I sound like a complete lunatic but this helps me a little to make me think I have some control over something that I really have no control over whatsoever!
ETA Again - I just saw Chelle's reponse - if you and Jacen get sick easily then I would maybe think about not having them over. Sorry - I am zero help!

Re: Swine flu recoup time... WWYD
Considering yours and Jacen's track record with getting sick...
STAY AWAY!!! Stay far far away!!!!
There will be other holidays I personally wouldn't take the chance right now.
Unless of course she is better by the time Thanksgiving rolls around

Yeah but we hold thanksgiving at our house. What do i say? Paty stay home!
Even if she is better by thanksgiving, can't people be carriers for it even if they're not actually sick themselves? or am i making that up?
Yes i'm becoming a germaphobe, i realize.

Re: Swine flu recoup time... WWYD
from what I've heard..once you do not have a fever for 48 hours, you are no longer contagious.
ets: how long will they have been on the tamiflu? I would say if it's more than 7 days you should be fine.
Of course it is YOUR decision.

me too! TRUST me I never thought I would be.
Well...she probably wouldn't like it if you said she couldn't come
Why don't you hand out masks for everyone?

Re: Swine flu recoup time... WWYD
Ryan had it and our ped told us he was most contagious the day before he was symptomatic and the days he had a fever (which was only for 24 hrs).
Since Jacen is vaccinated, if there is no fever for 2-3 days, I would say you're clear.
But, obviously you have to do what you're comfortable with.
I'm sure she'll understand if you expain you don't want to risk it
ETA: Ryan was put on heavy duty antibotics, not Tamiflu

Yeah see it's very frustrating to me that they didn't have her tested or push for that. I mean if it's not the swine flu, do you really want to put all of these things into her if it's not necessary?

I would avoid them and NOT have them to my house. It's too risky and very contagious.

Where did you get that information? I am in the same boat as the poster as sister has the Swine (swabbed Monday and confirmed today) and is planning to serve Thanksgiving Dinner.
I am very nervous about attending due to the conflicting information. Dr.'s are not even agreeing about this!

Re: Swine flu recoup time... WWYD
UPDATE: talked to my brother. They did have her tested (don't know why my SIL didn't know that) and she does have the swine flu.
They gave her a prescription and them each one as well.
I just asked them and they didn't give it to her. Because the doctor told them that it might make her throw up, they decided to wait it out. Today my brother says she's acting fine and doesn't have a fever, but in the next sentence says he's been giving her tylenol every 4 hours.
I so can't have them in my house. Jacen has been vaccinated, but he's had some respiratory problems in the past and i can't chance it. Not to mention my nephew hasn't gotten either flu shots, nor have the rest of us.
I wish they'd back out and i didn't have to tell them to stay home. Why do people not back out of things when they really should???

Honestly, since they are disregarding the doctor's advice, there is no way I would let them in my house in less than a week.
Sorry!!

How could they not give her the medicine?? Do they watch the news??
I would definitely tell them they can not come.

Re: Swine flu recoup time... WWYD
I get why they arent giving her meds (yep im strange)
But I would have backed out gracefully if i were in their shoes. especially if I chose not to give her meds
Really I can't understand why more and more people are exposing others to illnesses. Isn't it common courtsey to decline if you're not 100%?
then again, I have spent so many holidays without family and still have good strong relationships that I dont 'get' the importance of family events, I guess...

Thomas just got H1N1 vaccine today. Ped said (and daycare's rules are) you are contagioius until 24 hours after the fever breaks.... so you have to be fever-free, without fever reducing medicines, for 24 hours.

Re: Swine flu recoup time... WWYD
I wouldn't have them over - not b/c she has the Swine Flu b/c I think by then most likely you will be in the clear (unless she is still symptomatic) - I was told in the spring that the virus is contagious either 7 days from onset or 24 hours after all symptoms are gone completely. That said, the reason why I wouldn't have them over is b/c you have no idea who in the house will come down with it next and they will be contagious 24 hours b/f you even know they have it.
I don't think they are necessarily at fault though for not giving her the Tamiflu. In fact, unless she is in some high risk group I don't think all doctors are routinely prescribing it anymore. Tamiflu is a VERY powerful drug with some VERY scary side effects (i think a few people have posted about this on the boards) - and, likely, the swine flu will be more mild for her than taking the Tamiflu. So, while I think they should be declining the invite on their own - I wouldn't fault them for making the decision not to give her the Tamiflu.

ITA-I think it is very possible the reason that so many are infected is that the flu is contagious for far longer than "24 hours after the fever breaks" THe CDC said the virus can be shed for 7-10 days!
