What a moron. There are much more responsible and effective ways of teaching your children to be independent and how to amuse themselves. How about letting your kids play outside in front of your house, and checking on them from the window, for starters?

I agree 100% with the first two lines... the third not so much. She is in Queens, so maybe a front window/lawn isn't available to her? 100% Rhetorical since I do really think she is a moron.

Re: "Take your kids to the park and leave them there day"
that IS THE SINGLE dumbest idea I have ever heard. I dont care what we used to do decades ago or where you live, but even back in the early 80s I wasnt left alone at 7. What a moron.
If one should fall and break a leg or need stitches should they also learn independence by having to get themselves to the hospital or perform emergency first aid on one another?
Idiot.

She's for real?
When I read the title, I thought it was going to be an article form the Onion or something.

Re: "Take your kids to the park and leave them there day"
I believe that child do need time to just be kids and play outside with and without supervision.
Only you, as the parent, can determine what age is appropriate for your child and if he/she is ready.
I think her idea is one that should be explored more.
I don't believe she is crazy. We all have different points of view when it comes to raising children.
If you are not comfortable with her theory don't follow it.
You make your decisions when it comes to your kids and she will make hers.

I'm FB friends with Lenore We have a mutual friend and I think she is awesome - don't always agree with her philosophy. She will tell you herself that if you google "worst mother in the world," her name comes up because she was the one who let her son go on the subway at age 9 by himself with no cell phone to find his way home independently....

It's actually against the law to leave children alone at that age.
I saw this on the news and loved Ron Kuby's response. He said he thinks it's a great idea "because it would be good for business"

oh thats the same broad?! I remember her and I normally agreed with her.
but this thing... all I'm thinking is a bunch a kids alone in a park and a LINE OF PEDOPHILES at the gates just waiting to get in.
DH & I started letting Aidan walk to the bus stop by himself & today he walked himself home (I was home 5 minutes after him..)
He's 10 and I still feel that's a little too young.. but it's our way of slowly letting him have more independence.

I propose 'Let your kids talk to strangers day' or 'Kids don't look both ways before crossing day'.

I could give a rats balls what SHE does... but SHE is advertising to the entire city therefore giving US the right to criticize...

She's an idiot - plain & simple.
I agree that parents can be too overprotective these days but it reminds me of those stupid emails that fondly remember the days where their playground had lead paint & their kids didn't ride in a car seat or seat belt. We know better now. Well, at least *some* of us do.

I agree...and then will want OUR help (as the public) to assist her if G-d forbid her child is abducted or goes missing!

Agreed.
Ummm thanks Lenore, but I rather be labeled "too overprotective" and kiss my son goodnight knowing that hes sleeping safe in his house that night, then taking the chance of some psycho approaching him or him getting hurt.
