Only you, as the parent, can determine what age is appropriate for your child and if he/she is ready.
I think her idea is one that should be explored more.

I have a 10 year old and I live in the city and I can honestly say../ I CANNOT see leaving a 7 year old ALONE at a city park... nope sorry.
I could give a rats balls what SHE does... but SHE is advertising to the entire city therefore giving US the right to criticize...

For the record, I never said I would allow my 7 year old to go to the park alone.
Each parent should decide what is appropriate for THEIR child.

I agree...and then will want OUR help (as the public) to assist her if G-d forbid her child is abducted or goes missing!
Honestly, It does not matter if your child is 7 years old alone at the park, or 10 years old walking home from the bus stop, someone can take and hurt your child.
It does not matter what age your chid is.
We hear on the news everyday how children of all ages are taken from infants to teenagers.
Everyone has the right to help if something goes wrong!!!

I would not be leaving my 7 year old at the park alone. I would go to the park and sit on a bench and let them figure out how to entertain themselves. I am a big believer in independent play but safety comes first.

I think children can learn to socialize and be independent at a park while still being under the watchful eye of a parent.

I think if this is something you really want to do and you as a parent feel comfortable doing it then fine.. but not when its advertised for all the local child molesters to see...
I am way too overprotective and Im not even a mom yet so IMO i wouldn't feel comfortable doing this

I think this lady needs to move out of NYC if she wants to promote this type of lifestyle. Maybe some small town in Kanas would be better
I agree we can be a little too overprotective of our kids these days, but we also have more savvy predators out there as well.

I definitely don't think it's a good idea, but I *do* see her point. I think parents need to let kids be kids, and not be helicopter moms. But there is a responsible way to do that.
BTW- I don't think I was ever at the park alone, but we always played in the street w/o supervision. Is that legal? i'm just curious
