Taking 6 Wk old DS to Family Party: Yay or Nay?

I am dying to get out of the house. My BIL is having a small graduation party at his home this afternoon. It will be a combo of family and friends. Some of the family hasn't met my son yet and will no doubt be excited to hold him. My pediatrician said he can start going out between 6-8 weeks old. DS is 6 weeks, 1 day! Do you think it's too early to bring him to a family party? New mom question....I know. Please indulge me!!

I may be in the minority but I would not go. There are so many things going around right now, and I would not want my DS to be around so many people. If you really want to get out why not have your DH watch your DS and you just go for a couple of hours.

I agree.... I'm pretty go with the flow, but being that it's also flu season, I wouldn't go. If I did go however, I would not be passing my DC around for everyone to hold.

Me neither.....every other person I know right now has a cold. This time of year so many people are sick that I would not go. Especially cause I know if it was my family everyone would be oohingg and aaahing right over the baby even if I didn't let everyone hold him.

I am pretty easy going with babies, I took DS out by 6 weeks but it was the spring, this time of year there is just too much going around for me. JMO Chat Icon

my theory is that you or dh can always bring home germs anyway so why live in a bubble? we took both girls out pretty soon (with dd#2, I took her to a funeral at 10 days old, but that was an exteme sit.)

have fun, be careful and enjoy!

I'd go too! I would just let a select few hold them...luckily they sleep a lot at that age still and hopefully you can leave your DC in the infant carrier and NO ONE will need to hold your DC

Re: Taking 6 Wk old DS to Family Party: Yay or Nay?

I'd go, last year we took DS to a family birthday party when he was 3 weeks old. Everyone washed hands before holding him, no one kissed his face, my sister caged the dog (she is a big dog). I didn't even have to ask for any of this, I think people understand and want to protect a newborn. Chat Icon

I say go. I took dd out early but no one held her but me. I got a few rude comments from my bil but I could care less. My baby's health is more important then hurting someones feelings.
