taking blood...awful experience
DD is 19 months and i finally took her today to get her blood test (the lead/cbc level one) they needed 2 vials so they had to do it through her arm. she sat in my lap and i had to hold her while the nurse tried to do it. they couldn't get a vein and were shoving the needle in and out and side to side for what seemed like forever. she was screaming and shaking. i felt so bad. i told them to stop that she had enough and then i started crying. they waited for her to calm down and did the other arm which thankfullly worked the second they put the needle in. I am never doing this again! i felt like i was torturing her.
the nurse said it was normal to not find a vein and said "this must be your first baby" i dont care if it was my 10th baby i still dont like to see my child going through that.

poor baby Wonder they did the arm
AJ got hers at 12mo and it was her heel. drop by drop but thankfully it didnt bother her.
First or not, it would have been nice to have had a warning!

Re: taking blood...awful experience
Same thing happened with my DD. The guy did not find a vein with the first arm. I too said-never again.
If I lived somewhere that my child was exposed to lead or if there was some other "problem" that they needed to test her blood, then fine. But for this type of testing-I will not do it for my next child.

you actually are not supposed to do a heal stick at that age.... once they start becoming active the baby starts to get thicker skin on their feet and less fat on the bottoms and it greatly increases their risk of infections in the bone......
also, you have more of a risk of the blood being clotted and then they would have to repeat it

Re: taking blood...awful experience
ugh, btdt
my older one did okay but my little man just had to have blood drawn at only 11 weeks old, NIGHTMARE
the nurse could not get the first arm to work so she swicthed arms, it was pure torture...he was screaming, beat red, the whole 9 yards...but then towards the end, he was so defeated that he just started whimpering....my poor guy
sorry you had to go through that

Re: taking blood...awful experience
we had the same thing happen....it was one of the worst experiences of my life. DH even started to cry and that is a rarity. We stopped them....not worth it to put my child through that torture.

Re: taking blood...awful experience
we had this experience at Lab Corp. I thought the nurse as well as I was going to cry when she didn't get the blood the first time around and had to do it again...

Re: taking blood...awful experience
I am sorry that was so terrible. I was dreading DDs one year visit for this reason but they wound up doing a finger stick on her intead to get the CBC and lead level. I wonder why yours drew blood.

same here. i asked our doctor the other day and he thought going to north shore/lij might be better than a regular lab.

I agree with this 10000%. Personally, I think the hospital personnel are better trained to deal with little people than the big labs are. We took DD for her 1yr at Good Sam and we were in & out in under 5 minutes. Barely a tear, they had 2 people in the room - one to draw the blood, and another one to keep her distracted.
