Talk to me about Huntington school district
Is it really that bad? (ETA: It seems to get a bad rep) Does anyone have any first-hand experience with the district? We're currently zoned for it, but know we're not staying in this house too long (it's too small). We figured we'd stay in Huntington because we love the town, but try to get into Harborfields or Elwood. But of course, we just fell in love with a house in the Huntington district.
We hear mixed things. We have neighbors whose kids are in the elementary schools and have nothing but good things to say. We have neighbors whose kids graduated from the high school and had good experiences, and then we have a neighbor who ripped her kid out of the district after the whole Jack Abrams issue.

Re: Talk to me about Huntington school district
we are in the district now but do not have kids in the district yet. I grew up int he district
I went to elementary school and the junior high. I was challenged in math and science which was great. My mom was pro catholic school so i went to cathlic high school but my mom regrets not sending me to the highschool. I would have had a lot more options for classes. my friends wnt on to win a lot of awards and go to good colleges
my neighbor's kids graduated from the high school and went on to good colleges
i like that the district is of mixed race - some of the other districts around us are not - you learn to deal with a lot of other people.
a lot of a district is what the parents and kids make of it

Re: Talk to me about Huntington school district
Let me preface this by saying that I'm a guidance counselor, married to a teacher, and have friends in districts all over lower NY.
I feel like most districts on LI are fine. There's really only a small handful that I'd refuse to send my child to. Any school is generally what you make of it. An involved parent makes a huge difference in a child's education. You're going to find "bad" kids everywhere. Aubrey will be great, no matter where she is!

Re: Talk to me about Huntington school district
I don't live in the district but we are house hunting now.
We have been STRONGLY advised against moving into the Huntington SD. It does matter that much for us because DS is in a special needs program and will most likely never be mainstream. And while that would be our forever house, I still have to worry about resale for "just in case".

Re: Talk to me about Huntington school district
Thanks! I went to a school that didn't get stellar marks (although it's rated better than Huntington these days) and I think I did okay for myself. I was one of those kids involved in every activity. And my parents were on top of everything. It's funny because the people who go to the district typically say it's fine. It's the people who go to the neighboring schools (or whose kids went to the neighboring schools) that say, "oh, you don't want to send her there."

Thanks. Just curious, where you advised this because of a lack of resources for your DS, or just in general?

Re: Talk to me about Huntington school district
I'm also a product of the Huntington school district - K-12.
I had a great experience there and got a great education so it pains me to hear how "horrible" the district is.
My parents still live in the district and it seems most of their neighbors send their kids to private or catholic schools. There are a few kids though in the neighborhood who have graduated recently and have gone on to great colleges.
I do tend to agree with snowprincess - it's what you make of it.

Sorry I'm hijacking but I too LOVE being outside the village & wouldn't mind staying here (our house is way to small to be our permanent) but then based on other snide remarks about Huntington SD at this point I would prefer Harborfields but am so torn.

I hear the services and schools themselves are good, its just the riff raff and gang/violence activity in the area/district (even if miminal, obviously enough to shut a school down) is what people flee from.

Re: Talk to me about Huntington school district
When we were apt hunting, we were looking in and around huntington and folks told us to stay away. Both my hubby and I laughed.
There used to be a website you could enter in your zip code and others and learn the average income, racial split, drop out levels etc. Sorry I've long since forgotten the site.
I will say this. My high school ranked out much much poorer than my husband's. His high school was Hemstead HS in long island. He has a degree, went to aldelphi and Nassau Cty college, he has a decent job and is happy. He was 3rd in his class.
Me, I never got my college degree, but instead worked steadily and moved to NYC at 23 with nothing. I succeeded literally on my wits alone. I am always told my speech and writing skills often lead people to believe I have a college degree in english. Oddly enough I was a science major the short time I went to college
Both of us dealt with gangs, both of us dealt with Stigma of a bad school. School really *IS* what you and your parents make of it. We may not have had the resources the richer schools did but we both found ways to get what we needed and that journey alone taught us to think outside box, think on our own and explore possibilities. We also both learned new faces and places and had new experiences because we had to look outside our own area for resources.
Huntington's area was a HUGE improvement over our old schools (south huntington would have been our district while we were there). So for us it was relative.
Jim's little brother and sister both went to Hempstead HS and ended up 2nd (bro) and top of class (sis). Both went onto to college one is a biochemist the other is now in Hunter for nursing.
sorry so long.. basically.. its all relative.
And yes, I came home to TX for education for my child and yes, she's going to one of the top ranked HS in the city. But not the highest. I would have taken a home near another school if the price and distance to work was equal. I am in charge of her education, it is what I make of it.
But resale is true. Can't deny that. Good Luck!

D - you are in Huntington. That is the one that is considered worse. The HS is on Oakwood, the JHS is on Greenlawn Rd, intermediate is on Woodhull and it sounds like you would be Jefferson School for elementary (also Oakwood) if you are on the west side of the village, but I believe that the east side of the village goes to Washington (on Park, south of Pulaski).
If you compare the report cards of the schools in the Huntington township, Huntington does rank the lowest. and at some places pretty significantly. (graduation rates, regents testing, etc)
While there is a new superintendent, the cuts this year are also pretty big.

I dont fully agree. I dont think its parenting alone. When you go to school in an area that has guns going off outside your buillding, your child is at risk of getting harmed. If your child goes to school with children who disrupt the class, have no parental guidance at home or are in involved with gangs, even your well guided child can be effected or possibly harmed. That to me is the issue.
And resale of course, no one can deny that the thought of losing money if you want or have to sell your home down the line, is a scary one.

You are Huntington SD, which is generally considered the district more people seek to leave (over S. Huntington).
The general concept is that the elementary schools are good but the MS and HS are where the problems re gangs and violence are. I am not in the district so of course I dont speak firsthand. But I did househunt in the district for a while and this was the consensus. The mere fact they closed a school down due to gun violence in the area is the key indicator of why people are hesitant about the district.
But i do hear the services and schools themselves are good, its just the riff raff and gang/violence activity in the area/district (even if miminal, obviously enough to shut a school down) is what people flee from. Sad but true...wish they could turn it around b/c there are loads of gorgeous homes in the area. More gorgeous and amazing areas than crappy areas. I believe it will turn around in time. The area has too much going for it to let the crappy areas take it down. JMO
this is where I get confused and bare with me but the HS that closed . . .where is it??? The one by Kmart, wouldn't that be my HS? (that one is still opened) Are there two HS in the district.

Yes, you would be Huntington SD and not S. Huntington. I am in S. Huntington School District which is Countrywood, Oakwood, Birchwood, Maplewood, Stimson and Whitman HS.
As far as which is "better" who the heck knows, I have a ton of friends in my school district that LOVE it, rave about the teachers, programs, etc.. is it the best one on LI, I am sure it's far from, but I agree with everyone that it is what you make of it. I plan on being very involved when my DS attends school. You hear of kids going to the best school districts on LI and have major problems.
IMO, crime, violence, etc..are things I can't control and that would be my main concern. The neighborhood around Jack Abrahms is BAD and that is why they are doing something about it, or at least trying to.

Gotcha!!! So when we move, I should just stick with Harbofields or send my kids to catholic if I love the village.
It really is sad b/c I think there are A LOT of families like me and DH (my whole neighborhood actually) that live in the Huntington SD, it shocks me all the time that it's so bad when I feel like the majority of who I'm surrounded by are good people, with good kids.

It was actually an elementary school that closed. It's in the station. They were going to make it an intermediate school and have everyone in the district attend (at least this is how it was explained to me) whether they were zoned or not. Parents flipped out. There has been a couple of gun/gang incidents near the school. We're outside the village and zoned for Southdown elementary, which I hear is good. I'm not concerned about the elementary schools. More so, the high school.

The school that closed was an intermediate school. Jack Abrams Intermediate school, • 155 Lowndes Avenue • Huntington Station • NY • 11746 •

The HS is behind Kmart - that is still opened. Jack Abrams closed - that is south of Kmart by the train station.
ETA: 1/2 of the district went to Jack Abrams from 4-6 - the other half went to Woodhull. They were going to make it a 6th grade center (like Silas Woods in So Huntington), but closed it. So now the elementary schools go K-4 and Woodhull is everyone 5-6.
The benefit of walking to t he village is a great plus, but CSH and Harborfields are both close enough to enjoy the village and great schools.

TY!!! ( I still can't picture where Abrams is) I've lived there since 2006, you think I'd know by now.
We can't afford CSH!!!!! We are literally closer to CSH HS then Huntington HS and the price difference is EXTREME!!!!

Re: Talk to me about Huntington school district
Have you sent the "garden" by Jack Abrams? (on 110) It was supposed to be a community project to revitalize the area and clear the woods of gangs...it is now overgrown and looks like complete crap.
Posted by Xelindrya
I will say this. My high school ranked out much much poorer than my husband's. His high school was Hemstead HS in long island. He has a degree, went to aldelphi and Nassau Cty college, he has a decent job and is happy. He was 3rd in his class.
Don't take this the wrong way, I'm sure your DH is a fine and intelligent person and contributing citizen, but in my experience, as a teacher and a resident of my own SD, third in the class should be going to an ivy league school or top notch state...not NCC. If it was financial, 3rd in the class should be offered scholarships/grants/aid. That is what I want to see in the SD I live in. I understand that my children may not be that student and they may go to CC and that is fine.
ie a coworker's son graduated 3rd (from Huntington ) and was accepted into Yale, but took a full scholarship to Brandeis.

Also, I don't think anyone can compare Huntington Schools "years ago" to what they are now. Things are very different now.
