Both of us dealt with gangs, both of us dealt with Stigma of a bad school. School really *IS* what you and your parents make of it.

I dont fully agree. I dont think its parenting alone. When you go to school in an area that has guns going off outside your buillding, your child is at risk of getting harmed. If your child goes to school with children who disrupt the class, have no parental guidance at home or are in involved with gangs, even your well guided child can be effected or possibly harmed. That to me is the issue.

ITA! As a teacher that worked in a similar district to Huntington, I can tell you that the kids are the worst problem in "less desirable" districts. I wouldn't want my DS in a school where the kids have NO respect for others, disrupt the class, and have little or no parental guidance at home. It's just terrible how some kids act. Then add the gang problem to the equation... it's just not a place you'd want to send your kids. Maybe in elementary school, it's not as bad, but don't let anyone fool you, it's bad! The teachers will be fine, resources probably fine too... it's the kids that ruin it for others. Bottom line!

Have you sent the "garden" by Jack Abrams? (on 110) It was supposed to be a community project to revitalize the area and clear the woods of gangs...it is now overgrown and looks like complete crap.

I will say this. My high school ranked out much much poorer than my husband's. His high school was Hemstead HS in long island. He has a degree, went to aldelphi and Nassau Cty college, he has a decent job and is happy. He was 3rd in his class.

Don't take this the wrong way, I'm sure your DH is a fine and intelligent person and contributing citizen, but in my experience, as a teacher and a resident of my own SD, third in the class should be going to an ivy league school or top notch state...not NCC. If it was financial, 3rd in the class should be offered scholarships/grants/aid. That is what I want to see in the SD I live in. I understand that my children may not be that student and they may go to CC and that is fine.

ie a coworker's son graduated 3rd (from Huntington Chat Icon ) and was accepted into Yale, but took a full scholarship to Brandeis.

As a high school teacher, I have to comment on this one. Today, may of the top students in the class are opting to go to community colleges and state schools over private schools because of the costs involved. Many of the top students in the classes were accepted to Ivy League schools but chose state schools for financial reasons. Also, many students like staying closer to home for couple of years and then go away. There are so many factors that go into why a student choses a particular school. It isn't always cut and dry.

That's why I said from my experience as a teacher (yes HS too). I taught in the city, middle class LI and affluent LI. and I did mention that I see state schools too.

I apologize for misunderstanding your post. I thought you said that the top students should go to an ivy league school. I was just explaining why that may not always be possible.

Re: Talk to me about Huntington school district

I grew up in Huntington and moved out of district around 7th grade.

Huntington gets a bad rep in the press and I am not sure why. There are a lot of districts on Long Island that have the same, if not more severe, problems and do not get the same attention. Like all districts, there are good and bad areas, but from my experience (and I lived in a bad part growing up) school districts are what you make of them (like others have said).

Huntington is an AMAZING town and if it wasn't so frekkin out of the way (as in having to drive 15-20min from major highways) I would definitely consider living there. I still have many family members that live in the area.

Re: Talk to me about Huntington school district

I have a friend who works there and she said she would not send her own kids there. I live in Huntington but I am buying a house in Smithtown, I would not send my kids to Huntington either.

IMO if you can afford it, go to a district with a good reputation, why risk it?

But resale is true. Can't deny that. Good Luck!

And resale of course, no one can deny that the thought of losing money if you want or have to sell your home down the line, is a scary one.

Ok, I agree with you. A poor school with gangs and drugs is not the same as a violent school. My school was the last to get a cop, something we were proud of. We didn't need one.

Obviously I agree even more now as I have purposely chosen not to live in an area that happens have a huge sq but terrible school. You can get over 3000 sq, new construction, built to your specs here for around $120k or less, if you're willing to take that risk. I am not.

So yes, I agree, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if there was that much violence around. Honestly if it was that bad, I'd probably not be looking for more than 'just' the schools.

My parents finally moved out of our old 'hood' after Clinton closed Kelly AFB and the cop next door retired. Without the Air Force, families moved, without the families that mixed and kept things neutral the gangs out numbered us. Things got really bad, including a drive by shooting. That was literally the LAST week my family stayed there. They packed up my twin brothers (6) and my sister (7) and moved out of town/state. I already lived in NY by then too.

I know my old house is up for rent at a mere $325 a month, but I sure as heck ain't moving back in. Heck I've been home 2yrs and still haven't even driven back to that side of town.

Huntington wasn't that bad (yet) when I was last there. But I could be wrong.
