Talk to me about your gallbladder surgery

I'm scheduled to have my gallbladder out on 4/12 and I am just curious what the recovery was like for those who have had this done.

I've had 3 abdominal surgeries but none of them were laproscopic so this is unchartered territory for me. Did you actually go home the day of surgery? How long before you were driving/feeling better?

Talk to me about your gallbladder surgery

I didn't but I needed an ercp first, I felt a thousand times better after the surgery, just felt like I did too many sit-ups. Still have to watch greasy foods, but I wouldn't wish gallbladder pain on anyone.

Re: Talk to me about your gallbladder surgery

I went home the same day. I was in a lot of pain for about 1 week. I started driving within 5 days. I lost a lot of weight after the swelling went down. My biggest issues were due to the anesthesia. I had my surgery on a Friday and was back to work in a week (I am a teacher).

Good luck!

I went home the same day. Pain wasn't too bad. Was driving 2 days later. Took it easy for about a week. Good luck.

I had it this summer...def. due to pregnancy. My surgery was at Winthrop, I was scheduled for 7 AM and discharged by 11 AM! It was unbelievable! I was very sore the first 3 days, it was hard to get in and out of bed and I could not lift DS for a week. I was back to myself completely by a week...good luck!

Re: Talk to me about your gallbladder surgery

I was sore, I went home the next day because my surgery was late at night. They had me up and walking immediately. I had to take it easy for a few days, and no heavly lifting for 2 weeks.
I felt much better, because I was in so much pain. Be careful to stay away from fatty greasy foods for awhile, because your body has to get used to the fact your gall bladder is no longer there.

P.S....funny how so many people are now having problems with their gall bladder. First it was the appendix, now the gall bladderChat Icon I know the appendix is one of those "useless" organs.

Re: Talk to me about your gallbladder surgery

DH had gallbladder surgery last year and he was in and out of surgery within an hour. He was home the same night, we would have been home sooner but they want you to empty your bladder before they let you leave the hospital. He has four little scars from the surgery. The recovery wasn't bad he was feeling better a few days later.

Good Luck!

Here's my update... Since its been 1 week since I've had it out... The surgery itself was rather quick. I had nausea probs afterwards from the anesthesia. Cuts are very small and i didnt even have bandages... just like a clear glue ike substance over the incisions. I was wheeled into the OR at 10am and the surgery was over in like 1-1.5 hrs. I left the hospital by 3pm.

Completely sore the first 3 days. Hard to sleep/lay down due to the soreness. I took perc's around the clock. The 4th day I definitely was moving around better. And now a week later I have just about no pain. I have a 10 month old that I have to lift and carry around so by the end of the day, I'm def feeling some sorness again, but nothing compared to the first 2-3 days after surgery.

Eat light after surgery... Soups, juice, toast. But make sure to take a laxative!!!! You need to get that gas out (what they pump you with during surgery) and it won't happen if the exit is being blocked Chat Icon my doc told me to get up each hour and walk around for 5 mins to get the gas moving. I think that helped me recover better.

Good luck! Speedy recovery! You will be just fine Chat Icon

Re: Talk to me about your gallbladder surgery

they like to send home same day... they sent me home next day(because I was sooo oww) and had a drain bag because the infection was so bad...

the drain bag they took out like 4 days later... that hurt for me but was only a minute. I had like 2 weeks home from work after it for rest, I was pretty out of it the first week. I also couldnt lift over 10 lbs for a month- so my newborn I couldnt also lift the car seat carrier which made an extra trip for daycare. Driving they told me not for 1 week. I had family drive me to the 4 day appt check up... Also the belly button incision I Had some discharge - decided to hold off on going back to dr, finally did and apparently had some tissue sticking out a little, so they nummed and snipped it in the drs office.

the scars I can still see from Dec.

I was very lucky that I dont have much dietary change from it.. but last night I got sick and suspect its from the chinese food chicken and broccoli... fried food is my only problem other than that.... some people have a problem with fat in general

I agree with PP, definately walk, I hated walking around the hospital, but it helped get the gas out(whichw as causing shoulder pain) and get me feeling better

Re: Talk to me about your gallbladder surgery

I had mine scheduled at 8:30-9 am and by 10:30 I was in the recovery room and went home. I think I stayed in bed for the remaining of the day, and by the next day I was up and about.

I was on out of work for two weeks and had to stay out an additional week because the incision at my belly button was taking longer to heal. But believe me based on stories from friends who had gall bladder surgery before laproscopic was around, tell me that it was the worst experience ever.

So you should have any worries!! Chat Icon

Re: Talk to me about your gallbladder surgery

Thanks for all the replies with your experiences!

I had my surgery on Friday - it was late. I went into the OR at 12:30. I had tremendous pain when I woke up and we couldn't get it under control so they kept me overnight. I finally went home yesterday afternoon and I've been pretty couch bound. I can't sleep in bed yet. Sitting upright is the only position I can rest somewhat comfortably in. Percoset is my best friend right now. I'm counting down the hours till my next dose. It's rough but I'm sure I'll feel much better in a couple of days.

Thanks again for sharing!
