talking about judgement ... eating cold cuts, drinking a glass of wine, haing sushi and more
At a baby shower this weekend and I was amazed to sit at a table of women who were pregnant (had child), are pregnant and just about to get pregnant and discuss the "not allowed" rules of pregnancy and was enjoying every second.
All of them drank coffee (2 cups a day), all of then had a glass of wine occasionally, all of them eat cold cuts with out nuking them, east sushi once a week and list goes on and on. They said moderation and all of their doctors said the same thing. Even a nurse was there and she said people who cut it all out are going overboard unless you have a complicated pregnancy that your doctor inform you that you have to cut those foods out specifically.
I have to agree with them but am always amazed there is always one person who has to get up and say "your wrong and your harming your baby." Well it happened at the shower and we all just looked at her and just said whatever and moved on. But I ask the question why is it women have to point out when they think other people are wrong? I mean your body, your baby and if the dr says okay to moderation who the hell are you to judge?

Re: talking about judgement ... eating cold cuts, drinking a glass of wine, haing sushi and more
Reminds me of a time I was at a birthday party 9 months preggo with DS. My childhood BFF was across the room talking to 2 ladies I didn't know who were also pregnant. It was her bday and she was saying to them that they should go over and have a piece of the party hero (she hasn't been pregnant yet so she doesn't know "the rules"). The girls promptly told her that deli meats were a BIG no-no, at which point they all glanced over at the table with the hero and there I was 9 months pregnant with a HUGE stomach stuffing an even huger piece of hero down my throat.
I guess it all depends on your knowledge base, your life experience, etc. For me with the deli meats I read that getting listeria is like hitting lotto. However, ask that question to a girl who knows someone who lost a baby to listeria and they will probably say it's INSANE to take that chance.
I will say one thing though about people who are STRICT with the rules- they have NO chance of getting sick from those things so I definitely CAN see where they are coming from.

I agree with this. I think there is an "everything in moderation" for a LOT of things in pregnancy, but I think if I overheard a conversation that included potentially listeria-ridden deli meats and "everything in moderation" I would feel compelled to butt in fearing that the person saying this was misinformed and could hurt her baby.
Chances of getting listeria are one in a gazillion, I'm sure.. but having it once during pregnancy or once a week doesn't change the fact that if you get it, awful things will happen to your baby....

Re: talking about judgement ... eating cold cuts, drinking a glass of wine, haing sushi and more
I think the issue is that many people are quick to say "oh what a judgemental b!tch, how dare she"
BUT some people, I will even say MOST people REALLY DO care about others and if they feel something is dangerous - they want to let that person know.
It is like when I go to church, and some of the old ladies ask why I don't have a sweater on DD. They don't know that the crying room has NO A/C, they know that they are FREEZING and they do not want my baby to be cold too! I just explain that it is hot in the room and she is actually sweaty - then they understand. They are trying to be a voice for a child, or an unborn chld - even if we think it is annoying.

Because people have nothing better to do than worry about what everyone else does.
It annoys the living SHYT out of me.
I would NEVER give my unsolicited opinion on pregnancy, breastfeeding, parenting, etc to ANYONE. To each their own.
But others can't seem to hold back.
I hate people.
ETA- and half the time they are wrong. For example- coffee- where is the reserach that a cup or 2 of coffee can harm the baby? I'd like to know. Because my OB TOLD me to drink a cup of caffeine a day. TOLD me to. Because I had kidney stones and he wanted to keep my urine moving and caffeine is a diuretic. So I think I trust him more than some random hen at a baby shower!

Re: talking about judgement ... eating cold cuts, drinking a glass of wine, haing sushi and more
My DHs' friends wife knew someone in hs that got listeria and lost her baby. She wouldnt eat cold cuts b/c of that. Its pretty rare, and i agree..everything in moderation.
when i was pregnant, I frequented the starbucks near work and one day I asked for an iced coffee and the girl said "decaf?" and i said no, regular. and she continued to ask me about being pregnant and caffeine. I finally said I had a bad headache and thats better than popping pills for it ..so give me F*** coffee..lol.
Some people dont know when to shut their traps.

If you did a a poll, I think people on here (maybe not IRL) are more likely to judge those who freak out over every little thing (can I drink OJ? Are marshmallows safe? What about bread, will it give my baby a third arm?) than those who eat anything and everything in moderation.
So it really depends on your audience

From the American Pregnancy Association
Email Print Caffeine is one of the most loved stimulants in America! But now that you are pregnant, you may need to lighten up on the daily intake of your favorite drinks and treats.
Facts About Caffeine: Caffeine is a stimulant and a diuretic. Because caffeine is a stimulant, it increases your blood pressure and heart rate, both of which are not recommended during pregnancy. Caffeine also increases the frequency of urination. This causes reduction in your body fluid levels and can lead to dehydration.
Caffeine crosses the placenta to your baby. Although you may be able to handle the amounts of caffeine you feed your body, your baby cannot. Your baby's metabolism is still maturing and cannot fully metabolize the caffeine. Any amount of caffeine can also cause changes in your baby's sleep pattern or normal movement pattern in the later stages of pregnancy. Remember, caffeine is a stimulant and can keep both you and your baby awake.
Caffeine is found in more than just coffee. Caffeine is not only found in coffee but also in tea, soda, chocolate, and even some over-the-counter medications that relieve headaches. Be aware of what you consume.
Fact or Myth? Statement: Caffeine causes birth defects in humans.
Facts: Numerous studies on animals have shown that caffeine can cause birth defects, preterm delivery, reduced fertility, and increase the risk of low-birth weight offspring and other reproductive problems. There have not been any conclusive studies done on humans though. It is still better to play it safe when it comes to inconclusive studies.
Statement: Caffeine causes infertility.
Facts: Some studies have shown a link between high levels of caffeine consumption and delayed conception.
Statement: Caffeine causes miscarriages.
Facts: In 2008, two studies on the effects of caffeine related to miscarriage showed significantly different outcomes. In one study released by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, it was found that women who consume 200mg or more of caffeine daily, are twice as likely to have a miscarriage as those who do not consume any caffeine.
In another study released by Epidemiology, there was no increased risk in women who drank a minimal amount of coffee daily ( between 200-350mg per day.)
Due to conflicting conclusions from numerous studies, the March of Dimes states that until more conclusive studies are done, pregnant women should limit caffeine intake to less than 200 mg per day. This is equal to about one 12 oz cup of coffee.
Statement: A pregnant woman should not consume ANY caffeine.
Facts: Experts have stated that moderate levels of caffeine have not been found to have a negative effect on pregnancy. The definition of moderate varies anywhere from 150 mg - 300 mg a day.
How much caffeine is in your favorite drinks & snacks? Starbucks Grande Coffee (16 oz) 400 mg Starbucks House Blend Coffee (16 oz) 259 mg Dr. Pepper (12 oz) 37 mg 7 Eleven Big Gulp Diet Coke (32 oz) 124 mg 7 Eleven Big Gulp Coca-Cola (32 oz) 92 mg Ben & Jerry's Coffee Buzz Ice Cream (8 oz) 72 mg Baker's chocolate (1 oz) 26 mg Green tea (6 oz) 40 mg Black tea (6 oz) 45 mg Excedrin (per capsule) 65mg How much caffeine is too much? The less caffeine you consume, the better. Some experts say more than 150 mg of caffeine a day is too much, while others say more than 300 mg a day is too much. Avoiding caffeine as much as possible is your safest course of action. If you must get your fix, it is best to discuss this with your health care provider to make the healthiest choice for you and your baby.

Hmmm- I never did Starbucks... wasn't a fan of their coffee...too strong for me. I would get a small DD coffee or a small coffee I made at home. He wanted me to have one cup of caffeine a day he said... I guess he assumed I would use my common sense to make it a small cup- and not a double shot espresso or anything!

I agree it's based more on life experience but also think it's more personality than knowledge. It's in some people's nature to correct, get on a soapbox, or scare the heck out of everyone else around them.
It may be a small risk but it's one you take. My assumption is that everyone is fully aware of the risks & there is no need for me to get on a soapbox or get all judgmental on someone.
I only hope the odds are with the person.

Honestly, I could care less what anyone else wants to do. For me and my baby - I'm not taking any chances. What one person considers overboard another may consider cautious. I can certainly give up coffee, wine, sush and cold cuts for 10 months if there is even a 1 in a gazillion chance it could harm my baby. I have at least 70 yrs to enjoy these things - why take a chance. Is it a small chance - yes. But, anyone who says there is no risk at all is just not educated on the facts.

I guess it all depends on your knowledge base, your life experience, etc. For me with the deli meats I read that getting listeria is like hitting lotto. However, ask that question to a girl who knows someone who lost a baby to listeria and they will probably say it's INSANE to take that chance.

ITA
And moderation does NOT apply to something that could be the ONE food product that has listeria and you contract it.
Some topics are just controversial. Add in a health risk to a fetus who cannot speak for themself and you have a recipe for disaster. For me, I am not a fan of people joking about "risks" and being a "bad preggo" for eating or drinking xyz. I don't find any risk to an unborn baby funny at all. But I probably would just keep my opinion to myself but gasp inside at the idea of taking a gamble with your precious unborn child.
Odds are....well someone always has to be the one...

Re: talking about judgement ... eating cold cuts, drinking a glass of wine, haing sushi and more
I never gave up coffee, just kept it to 1 a day. A GAY MAN in my office commented about it.
However, he wasn't *judging* me. Frankly, I don't think he really cared at all but he heard about the no caffiene rule (he has several nieces and nephews by his sisters so he's heard quite a few things, I'm sure) and he was surprised that I didn't keep to it.
I know a lot of people judge, it's what they do. But I also think a lot of people comment out of sheer curiosity and it's misinterpreted as judging.

Re: talking about judgement ... eating cold cuts, drinking a glass of wine, haing sushi and more
See here is the thing- there are going to be opinions on all sides of this debate.
Coffe/no coffee
Wine/no wine
Moderation vs not at all
Listeria issues that have nothing to do with moderation and just once can harm you.
What I would do. What YOU would do. What our mom's did. Etc etc etc
BUT, in the end I think the topic is about passing judgement on others. THAT Is what woudl bother me the most.
It's MY body, it's MY baby, it's MY choice to know the risks. A woman can legally have an abortion if she so chooses in this country. Her body, her choice, right? I don't see where a Barrista at Starbucks or a busybody in the office should have ANY right to say ANYTHING to a pregnant woman about what she does- whether it be eating a sushi roll or smoking a joint. I'm sorry, but MYOB has gone out the window in this country... and it really pizzes me off!

Re: talking about judgement ... eating cold cuts, drinking a glass of wine, haing sushi and more
No doctor would say raw fish in moderation is OK. No doctor would say Subway/Quizno coldcuts not heated up are OK, just as no dr. would say raw cookie dough is OK.
Sometimes there is a grey area, and sometimes there isn't.
To the OP, it sounds like an innocent conversation among women at a shower, some with differing opinions. It's hard if you haven't been PG because you haven't seen/heard from the doctor's mouth.
