People need to shut their traps.
I had caffine, 1/2 glass of wine every once in a while (no sushi but that's because I hate it), I did all the no no's and my child is fine. Just fine.
It's all about luck and odds, it's a gamble re your health during pg and your unborn child's health. Good for you that you were lucky your DC turned out fine, but not everyone is. This is what compels people to comment, esp also they may feel responsible to share info they believe may save some heartache on....
So then what do you say to the women who have doctors who said it was fine to have these things? My doctor and midwife said it was aokay to eat what I wanted, and with my own research as well am comfortable with how I handled my pregnancy. I also delivered at a top hospital in the is country with a top 10 medical school, so I know these are qualified individuals.
Also, if doctors start recommending these no no foods again, do you believe your doctors with the current information, or previous, as we all know that information changes all the time.
Last point, from what I have read incidents of Listeria have not dropped in this country since these advisories, so are they doing anything productive? And why is it that NY seems to be the state with all these warnings but not as much as other states? Could it be the insurance premiums?
ETS: Out of the miniscule percentage of women who contract listeria while pregnant are Latin women who make a homemade cheese at home. So if you take that into the equation, the risk is even smaller. You are putting yourself and your unborn child more at risk by crossing the street or driving your car.

I hate this kind of response. I highly doubt you did all of the no-no's as I'm sure crack & heroin are on that list - and if you did that, well yeah I'm going to judge.
It reminds me of those emails where they lament about how carefree the 70s were...about my mom smoked while pregnant with me, I played on playgrounds with lead paint & didn't use car seats but I turned out just fine.
Define "fine" for me? Learning disabilities, attention deficit, hyperactivity, on the autism spectrum, cancer, etc. No one knows what causes that in a child. There is no finish line to "my child is fine". I had a friend who died of liver cancer last year at 42. Two other friends (childhood neighbors) came down with Hodgkins & Non-Hopkins Lymphoma. When does "fine" stop?
We know better now. We know there are things you should try to avoid. We know women have contracted listeria, we know smoking can cause complications in utereo, we know drinking excessively can result in fetal alcohol syndrome. There are plenty of alcoholics, crack moms etc. that have "healthy" children.
This is a crap shoot & at the moment, you have "won" it. When you answer like that, keep in mind that you may be encouraging someone else to pick up a sandwich, to opt for red bull for lunch or whatever unhealthy things you choose to do & she may not win that crap shoot.
For the record, I ate cold cuts while pregnant, but yes there is a risk of listeria & they are generally high in sodium.

Re: talking about judgement ... eating cold cuts, drinking a glass of wine, haing sushi and more
People need to make decisions for themselves and be content with them. Leave other people to make their decisions.
My coworker at my new job was 8 months prego when I started here. She would get tuna 2x a week from a deli over here. She would also get cold cuts from there as well.
It made me nervous, I thought it was alot of tuna. I also found the place less than cleanly and would NOT be eating there prego. But I kept my mouth shut and just said a prayer that it would be ok.
The guy across the lunch table said, " you eat way too much tuna for a pregnant lady."
I gave into a subway craving and had a spicy italian sandwich with my son. I went into labor that day and was terrified I had gotten listeria/bacertial infection.
It turned out that it was all just a coincidence. But all I could think was how that sandwich was soooo not worth it, here I am wondering why he is coming so early and if I caused this!

What if you Dr says it is ok? Or RECOMMENDS it and TELLS you to drink it- like he did with me and caffeine? Because I had an underlying health issue that caused him to deem it ok and actually BENEFICIAL to drink it. In an amount that he deemed as SAFE.
See that is what I mean- you don't know what everyone's situation is. You don't know if there is an extenuating circumstance. That is why you mind your own business.

I totally agree with you. I really dislike it when people say "and they are fine". We don't know the affects of many things until later on in life.

my doctor also said raw fish from a reputable restaurant was okay in the 3rd trimester and believe me, I ate it weekly!
When I was pregnant with DS, I went out for sushi at my favorite sushi restaurant. I would always get the eel rolls since they were cooked. There was another pregnant woman sitting nearby who was eating raw sushi and we started chatting. I asked her if her OB had said it was ok to eat raw sushi and she informed me that she herself was an OB. She told me the same thing about it being from a reputable restaurant but that she warns her own patients about the risks. Personally, I didn't eat raw sushi (mostly because I didn't want to get lectured from my neurotic DH ) but I thought it was very interesting that a pregnant OB was not following her own medical advice.

Yes, that is what I said earlier. Those statements are what disturb me. I can't stand the bragging statements that almost boast about something that could have harmed an unborn baby.
Someone brought up crossing the street COULD be dangerous. But that's different, and again not comparable. That's part of just living a normal day to day life, but no one HAS to have sushi while pg to survive. You can't compare eating or drinking certain foods, when other choices are available, to having to cross a street.

so then what you are saying is that if you are pregnant you should not do anything that is a luxury. It is okay to drive yourself to work, but dont drive to a party because it is a risk to your child. A MUCH greater risk i might add then eating the dip at the party.
I get what you are saying about being boastful about dangerous activities that result in healthy children. But to me that means smoking, not the .0001 percentage chance of listeria. To me, that is not playing russian roulette with my baby, and does not warrant judgement on a mother.

I don't really look at it as bragging but more along the lines of "hey I did it & I was fine, don't worry about it." which MAY encourage other people to go against their ob's advice.
Research results change daily so I don't blame people for rolling their eyes at the latest & greatest reports.
I lean towards MYOB with other people, particularly with pregnancies. Outside of letting someone know something I know they don't know, I generally keep my mouth shut unless asked. It is a small risk but a risk nonetheless.
Perfect example, both of my kids were belly sleepers as infants. I researched & decided I was going to put them to sleep on their bellies. When my girlfriend asked me if I thought it was ok for her baby to sleep on her belly, I said "I can't tell you it's ok. SIDS studies are pretty clear that sleeping on their backs is the best way to go. I did it with my two but made sure the mattress was firm, no blankets, no stuffed animals, & at the bottom of the crib only." Then she said "So it's ok for me to put B on her belly?" and I said "I can't tell you its ok. Only what I've done."

There's a leap.

Re: talking about judgement ... eating cold cuts, drinking a glass of wine, haing sushi and more
what i think is being glossed over is that certain OB's are saying its okay to eat/drink these items. YOUR OB might say something different.
I think many Dr.'s say no and not in moderation because of fear of being sued. Let's be honest they don't want some woman crying that her baby died because of eating sushi from a food truck that was sitting out for hours and prepped four days ago and then saying I am going to take legal action. It's just my theory.
I will say it again if you want to not eat/drink something then go do that but don't get on your and preach to the world how others are wrong and you know better because your OB told you. The only time I raise an eyebrow is smoking but I don't need to tell my 8 months pregnant niece who is smoking that since she already knows it. Its her choice her baby so i stfu.
