TDAP Shot - I may need it again?
I got the TDAP shot in September and got pregnant in October, so I was told I don't need it because you can get it before you get preg or anytime after 20 weeks.
Well...we went to our childbirth class last week and she said that I should really get it again when DH gets it because while I won't contract it and give to the baby, the BABY can still get it because they won't have the antibodies since I wasn't pregnant when I got the shot. Grr...I wouldn't have gotten it in September if I'd have to just do it again.
Anyone else run into this? If you had the TDAP shot before getting preg, would you take it again when you got preg (after 20 wks)?

TDAP Shot - I may need it again?
With #1, I got it at the end of May and we conceived end of June so my dr never offered it.
I plan on getting it this time since I haven't had it since.

TDAP Shot - I may need it again?
I JUST went thru something with this. My ob was tellig me to get the shot even though I got it 3 years ago when I gave birth to my DS. My OB's office doesn't give the shot so I went to my primary care doc. He refused to give it to me even after we called my OB's office and got the ok. He wasn't comfortable giving it to me since I am PG (36 weeks at the time). So I ended up not getting it. He told me if I should get it to wait till after I give birth when I'm still at the hospital. I'm seeing my OB on Friday and will see what he says about all this. I hate that I got conflicting opinions on all this!
At the end of the day I guess I will wait since my pcp won't give it to me and my OB doesn't offer it..
Edit to add the shot is good for 10 years which is also why my pcp wouldnt give it to me

Re: TDAP Shot - I may need it again?
I had it 3 years ago after I gave birth (recommendations at the time for anyone around a newborn to be vaccinated to stop the spread of pertussis. I also had it again at 32 weeks pregnant this time per CDC's new recommendation to give it to pregnant women in their 3rd trimester to actually give antibodies to the baby before they get there first TDAP at the 2 month visit ( so it protects you from passing it to the baby and protects the baby itself from direct ab's passed into the womb) They are recommending it due to the large resurgence of pertussis and the high mortality rate in infants less then 3 months. I got it at my OB 's office but my PCP also recommends it based on the new guidelines.

TDAP Shot - I may need it again?
I had it in the hospital after I had delivered dd, not while I was pregnant. She is up to date on her vaccines as needed.

Exactly this! The newest recommendation is to get it during each pregnancy to pass protection on to the baby since pertussis has become much more widespread. I was glad I did it (despite the sore arm) since I ended up having a preemie. The nicu actually gave the shot to our relatives for free for added protection for the baby.

Re: TDAP Shot - I may need it again?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get this shot. I was offered the TDAP by my OB and the hospital after birth and like an idiot I denied it both times figuring my PCP will just give it to me eventually and thought who even gets whooping cough anymore anyway? Low and behold im sitting at Cohens Children's hospital as I write this with my 28 day old son who was diagnosed with Whooping cough. It's the most horrendous thing I've ever had to experience. I'm devastated. This poor little man is so so sick, I can't stand to see him laying here. Now granted chances are he didn't actually get it from ME, I don't exhibit any signs of any illness, but infectious diseases said he could have gotten it from anyone. In adults it could look like something as mild as the common cold, yet it could actually be Pertussis and they don't even know it. I would get it to protect you and the baby

Oh no!!! I hope he gets well soon. This is why they recommend getting it during pregnancy so the protection passes to baby. I definitely plan on getting it during this pregnancy. I had pertussis as an adult and it was so awful, I can't imagine a baby having it.

I would definitely talk to your OB, you would think they would have it mine barely gave me a choice hehe. If not your PCP should be up to date on the recommendations as well.

TDAP Shot - I may need it again?
I got the TDAP booster after I had DD (in the hospital) and was told by my OB that I will get it again after I give birth with #2.

Re: TDAP Shot - I may need it again?
Usually the OB isn't the one to give it to you (aside from being in the hospital getting it) - and it would come from your general internist/regular doctor.
I got it but the issue is that the baby won't have the immunity since I didn't get it while I was pregnant so I'll ask for sure when I go on Monday but on the phone just now they said they don't recommend my getting it again since I literally just had it in September.

Re: TDAP Shot - I may need it again?
Just got back from OB apt and they recommend I get the tdap shot. they actually gave me a prescription to get filled for the shot and to bring it back to my next apt and they would administer it to me.

UPDATE: I just had my 32 week appt and before I could even bring it up, my dr asked me about getting it. The recommendation has changed in the two years I had dd and its recommended for all pregnant women to get it I. The third trimester so antibodies can be passed to baby. I got it.

I got it 2.5 years ago when I was pg with DS. I got it again last week at my 36 week appt for DD so that she'll have the antibodies.
