Tell me about Once Upon a Child

For selling stuff. I know they don't give you much, but does anybody have a roundabout average of what they give you? I had a big yard sale this weekend and sold very little of what I have. I still have tons of stuff, including TONS with tags still on them. I just want to get rid of the stuff already.

Also, do I need to make an appointment to bring stuff in so they have somebody to work on it with me?

For NB-1 year, they only take with tags, and usually $1. For over 12 months, I was offered like 50 cents. How were you pricing at the garage sale? At my last one I priced most clothes 50 cents or $1, and sold a lot.

I guess I had things overpriced! The stuff I have is expensive stuff and in great condition! I guess I have to decide if it is more worth it to take a tax deduction or to have the small amount of cash I can get for it.

I decided i'd rather sell on here or at a garage sale rather than seeing Once Upon a Child turning around and profitting. They do pay more for the baby items like exersaucers, etc. You'd probably still do better selling on here.

I would def sell on your own. I think they are a complete waste to sell to.

it depends on what your selling, I know a lot of people who will never go back to sell to them and a few of my friends who expected to get next to nothing rave about them.

I've had better luck having a garage sales, selling on here, craigslist...etc.

People at garage sales won't usually pay more than $1 for an item, maybe $2 if it's new. IME Once Upon a Child gives you garage sale prices. Gets it out of my house, and I don't have the work of a garage sale.

ETA, if you have expensive items, custom clothing, etc. try selling on the Facebook New & Used Pages, or other clothing resell places on there.

At garage sales, the most I'll pay for clothes, regardless of brand, is $1 unless it's something like a coat then I'll do $2 or $3. Also, when I go to garage sales, people just have their stuff thrown in a bin all sizes mismatched etc. I hate digging and looking at the tags. I went to 2 garage sales where the lady was super organized and you know what, I cleaned her out of most of her stuff. It ended up working in her favor just putting a little more effort in.

I love going to Once Upon a Child to shop because they have everything separated by size and gender and most of their stuff is a higher quality name brand. I'm not a brand name snob but I find that the better brands are built to with stand a toddler, stains, and the multiple washes. Yes, their prices are higher than yard sales but I'd much rather spend $2 - $4 each piece of clothing there for Ralph Lauren, Gap, and Nautica that last me then $10 for a Circo polo at Target new especially since DS is only going to get a few months out of it anyway.

I agree with you. I had everything organized and most things hung up. I bought clothing racks and everything looked perfect...like a store. I was not willing to let Gymboree, Gap and Nautica go for $1. I'm sorry, my kids had so much stuff that most was not worn more than once or twice. Most was in like new condition. I'll sell on ebay or here instead!

ETA: there were some people who knew the value of what I had and didn't have a problem paying $2-$3 for them instead of $1.

Re: Tell me about Once Upon a Child

I have sold to Once Upon a Child and I kinda felt crummy leaving there after bringing in a HUGE bag of name-brand items and getting like $9 for it. It just didn't seem worthwhile to me. I now donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters since it is an organization that I volunteered with in College and so I feel a connection to them. I don't even get the tax write off ticket usually, but I am fine with donating.

Re: Tell me about Once Upon a Child

I tried selling to my local consignment shop but got almost nothing for unworn, brand new clothing with tags. So now I either give the clothing to friends with kids who are younger than mine are or donate it to local charities for the tax write off.
