When the Realtor tells them to take it off, if they don't it will stay on there.
Usually once it's in contract

I know my parents' house came off when they went into contract but it is up to the realtor to notify MLSLI to take it off

Correct
Mine was about 4-5 days after it was signed and in the Lawyers hands.

Ours stayed up a couple weeks after it went into contract. I think the realtor forgot to take it down, and since they weren't showing it, we didn't bother reminding him.

MLS rules state that the listing must constantly be up to date or the REA could be fined. so once the house in under contract (fully executed meaning both buyer and seller have signed) it must be updated on the MLS to keep the inventory fresh and up to date.
FYI - the REA's dont notify MLS. they change the listings themselves.

my realtor-actually the sellers realtor is not the sharpest pencil in the box. our house was on MLSLI till AFTER we closed. We signed contracts early March & closed late may.
