Tell me what to expect repeat c-section

I am 22wks pregnant & having a repeat csection at 39 wks. Will be at Winthrop. Last time I had an emergency csection at 31wks & was so out of it. I am starting to have a ton of anxiety. Doesn't help that I am on lovenox & scared I will go into labor before 39wks & have to be knocked out. What will it be like before/during/after? I also will have a 3yo to come home to. TIA!!

Re: Tell me what to expect repeat c-section

It was a breeze compared to first one. It is surreal being awake for the csection but its really quick. Walk walk walk afterwards..it's the only way to feel good and recover quick..walk the halls. The second c section I was back to myself in a week compared to three weeks with he first! Nothing to worry about, good luck

Tea..ur being knocked out? Even better. Enjoy the peace of the hospital..Winthrop has great food and desserts! I had to come home to a three yr o,d too. He knew mommy had a boo boo on her tummy

I could seriously have written this myself, verbatim (except my emergency c-section was at 30 weeks). It will be fine. I was on lovenox, had a 3 yo, was PERTRIFIED (to the point where I had to go to therapy over it). It was absolutely fine....I had c-section, forced myself out of bed the next day, had DS up visiting, came home, had some help the first few days, and it was all a walk in the park compared to being scared out of my mind with a 30 week preemie in the NICU. KWIM?? Please feel free to FM me....I totally understand your feelings

Re: Tell me what to expect repeat c-section

I had a repeat c-section this past december. My first was a csection after 19 hours of labor and labor not progressing (only got to 3/4 cm). I have to say, I was very anxious about the whole surgery; but, in the same breath, I was completely prepared. I had my bags packed, my family was coming to visit and help with DS #1 and it was a breeze. I had some pain and discomfort, but nothing crazy that wasnt managed with medication. I did have edema around the incision and was sent home with visiting nurse. I was up and out of the bed the night of my surgery and recovery was pretty easy. After I went home, I just took ibuprofen and did well. I took it easy and did not drive for 2 weeks, but I moved around well with minor discomfort.
good luck!

I had a repeat c/s in March. I was very nervous but it was much easier than I remembered. The recovery was easier too. Walk as much as you can and shower as soon as they let you. Enjoy your time in the hospital....I did.....it was the most peace and quiet I've had in years. Chat Icon

Re: Tell me what to expect repeat c-section

I just had a repeat CSection at winthrop 8 months ago. It was def. less stressful than the first. There is something surreal though but not going into labor first and walking into the hospital knowing your baby will be born in a few hours.

They bring you into a small "waiting area" room with curtains to separate the patients. They hook you up to the IV. You wait there untill you are called for the surgery. You are then wheeled into the operating room..just like that.

The Spinal is given with just an injection, no tubing like the epidural.

I feel that I healed faster the 2nd time without ever having gone into labor. You need to walk, walk, walk afterwards. Take the pain meds.

I had my 4 year old to come home to as well and I explained to her that mommy had a booboo on her belly and had to be gentle. It worked out great.

Sectioned on Monday night, DS was there at 2pm the next day...if siblings were allowed earlier, I would have had him there earlier. He stayed for about an hour, but was getting very restless. He came each day

Same as above! My repeat c was a walk in the park compared to my first! I didn't mind the hospital. I got to Sttn and eat snacks all day!

Tell me what to expect repeat c-section

I didn't have a repeat c, but a scheduled one since DS was breech. It was a breeze! We walked in to admitting, then went up to L&D and they placed us in a room. I got my IV started, they did my admission, hubby hung around, got a snack, our parents went in and out a few times. We were basically waiting for the doc to arrive (he was coming from a conference he was lecturing at). Anesthesiologist came in, said hi, then doc came in said hi. I walked into the OR, sat on the table, got my spinal. They swung my legs up, draped me, and within 5 minutes DS was born!

Re: Tell me what to expect repeat c-section

i just went through it 1 month ago, with a 33 month old at home.

though the surgery itself was much more rough (BP and bleeding problems) I felt a ZILLION times better. I delivered at winthrop and they had me out of bed 7 hours later vs. 20 hours later with my first. I also took nothing more than mortin piggy backed with tylenol on the hospital. I might have taken dilaudid 2 times in the hospital, just for better sleep.

I decided to go home on day 3 the second time around. I really thought I might regret it (main reason to go home was to be with DS Chat Icon ) but I was fine! I was literally crawling around DS' playroom cleaning up 2 days after I came home.

With #1, I had a panic attack going into surgery. This time around, I was 100% ready and didn't fear anything.

Take pain meds if you need them, walk ASAP and just go with the flow. Even though the surgery itself was much tougher for many reasons, my recovery was a breeze compared to the first and the first wasnt bad.

ETA - I delivered jan 21, the really cold week so we only brought DS the first night. I delivered at 10:13am and he was there at 5pm.
