Thanksgiving question [Poll]

Do you know what turnips are? Do you know what they taste like? Do you like them?

I just went into Uncle Guiseppes to reserve my turkey and as I was walking out, I saw a sample table with sweet potatoes, stuffing, etc. So I asked the guy... Will you have pre-made turnips available for Thanksgiving?

And he said, "What's that, a dessert?" Chat Icon

The lady next to me laughed. She knew what they are but she was also at least 20 years my senior.

I'm wondering if they are an old-fashioned thing? I loooooove turnips. I just don't like making them. Chat Icon

Re: Thanksgiving question [Poll]

The taste kind of defies explanation, at least for me! They are pretty much the consistency of mashed potatoes.

My mother would make them with carrots and butter to cut the bitterness a little. But not too much. I like them just like that, with a little bit of salt.

We had a turnip making debacle years ago so DH is a bit turned off to them. When they're raw, they're hard as a rock and have an ugly waxy outside texture. You have to remove the outside layer, then cut them into pieces (not easy) and boil them for a long time to get them soft. That's probably why they're not so common!

The woman in the store said she nukes them to make them easier to cut. I never heard that before.

same here! i have to say, the OP post made me laugh. I grew up on turnips. we had them at so many meals. Granted my mother is from Ireland it was just one of the things that we always ate here and over there so turnips are normal to me, so i guess i just thought the post was funny because i was like, "um yeah... of course i have heard about turnips!!!"

they are so easy to prepare... when you buy one or two (depending on how big theya are) you just peel it and chop it up into chunky pieces (like you would with potatoes for mashed potatoes). throw in boiling water and cook until soft. drain and mash and season with salt, pepper, butter to your liking.
