The Barefoot Contessa - Ina Garten - how disgusting is this
Ina Garten Turns Down Make-a-Wish Kid TWICE.
The Make-a-Wish Foundation had to break some bad news to a 6-year-old cancer patient this week ... when Food Network star Ina Garten informed them she was too busy to cook a meal with the boy ... TMZ has learned.
A family member involved with the Make-A-Wish foundation tells us ... a little boy named Enzo was approached by the organization after he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia three years ago.
Enzo told Make-A-Wish ... he really wanted to cook with the "Barefoot Contessa" host because he would often watch the show with his mother while resting in bed.
M.A.W. approached Garten with the wish last year ... but at the time, she was unable to meet with Enzo due to a book tour. The organization urged Enzo to pick another wish, but he told them he wanted to wait until she becomes available.
We're told the organization went back to Ina this year ... but her team responded with a "definite no" ... once again, citing scheduling conflicts.
A member of Enzo's family says the 6-year-old is heartbroken ... and asked parents, "Why doesn't she want to meet me?"
When we called Make-A-Wish for comment on this story, they told us, "From time to time, planning for wishes doesn't turn out as originally envisioned, despite people’s best intentions and efforts throughout the wish-granting process."
They noted that Ina is a "good friend" of the foundation.
A rep for Garten tells us, "Despite her demanding schedule, [Ina] participates and helps as many organizations as she can throughout the year, helping children and adults like Enzo with life threatening and compromising illnesses.
The rep continues, "Unfortunately, as much as she would like to, it's absolutely impossible for her to grant every request she receives."
We're told Enzo has now made a new wish -- he wants to swim with dolphins ... and he's already taking lessons to make his dream come true.

I will no longer follow her or support anything she sells. That is wrong on more levels then I have time to talk about.
She should be ashamed of herself

I can see both sides.
It is HORRIBLY cold/cruel for not wanting to meet a little boy.
But
I can only imagine the number of requests she is getting. Like how many people contact her for all a "valid" reason?

I can understand her being to busy to cook with him, but I think she can find the time to at least meet the little boy.

I agree but this is a child with a life threatening illness.
I've read plenty of stories where the celebrity has sent gifts or even a personalized video in lieu of not being able to personally meet the person..
All I'm saying is that among her team of people, no one could have made at least that possible? or done something?
shame on her.

Re: The Barefoot Contessa - Ina Garten - how disgusting is this
While it is admirable to take the time to make a wish come true, I don't fault a celebrity who doesn't do it. They are inundated with requests from fans all of the time and also need to run their own careers not to mention their involvement in scores of charities of their own choosing.
I'm more disgusted that it was published.
My co-worker's daughter was a Make-A-Wish recipient. Her coordinator told her how truly amazing Michael Jordan was but volunteered that another celebrity continually refused requests for one child for years. I googled because I was surprised a B list actor would turn down publicity. Turns out that guy ran his own charity, was very involved with the kids in that camp & had done numerous Make-A-Wish dreams come true.

This is the second not nice thing I've heard about her. I'm not watching her show anymore if I happen to see it.
I don't care what your financial or obligatory reasons are. I would be HONORED if a child wanted to spend 1 hour with me as their last wish. Shame on her.

ITA agree with this.
If she had a good assistant/publicist, they would have made sure to somehow acknowledge the child even if she couldn't make it to cook for him.
It's just sad. I use to love her show but I'm not watching anymore.

She said no at the first request because of scheduling.
The little boy said he wanted to wait until her schedule was free to allow her to do this.
A year later and she still doesn't have a few hours to do it at any point this year??
I think thats more like she can't be bothered than scheduling issues...but thats jmo.

Exactly ... I'm sorry, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to have an entire year-plus filled each and every minute with something else scheduled. (I've personally never heard of her before this, but I know that doesn't mean much.)
If she couldn't do it, she should at least have sent him a bunch of stuff or maybe videotaped a message to the poor child ... I am sure it would have meant the world to him.
Just disgusting.

I don't know who she is so maybe everyone knows more about it then me. What I am saying is celebrities get requests like this all of the time. They could spend every single hour volunteering at a charity, meeting ill children & there is always someone that isn't getting their needs met. I've worked for a charity & have seen celebrities sandwich in their time between events for charities. It's draining to watch. I can't imagine what it's like to do it. I'm not saying they shouldn't give back to their public but how many other requests did she get that she did fulfill?

Re: The Barefoot Contessa - Ina Garten - how disgusting is this
... wouldn't have been the move I personally would've made.
I just don't see how its any of our business.
Seconding the PP who said they were more disgusted that this was published.
For all we know... they just contacted her for two different instances where she was previously booked.
Nowhere does it say that she was asked to meet with him 'at any time that would be open for her.'
Again - had it been me I probably would've replied the first time with 'Oh so sorry I can't make it at this specific time -- I'm available on this day or this day etc.'
But - it doesn't state that this did or did not happen.
So I'm not going to get judgey on her.

Maybe I'm taking this too personally, but I happen to have a niece who is living with brain cancer and laid up in bed ALL the time.
So, yes, at 6 years old, when all the other children were outside playing and running around, my niece was watching cooking shows with her mom, and because of it now LOVES to cook.
She would have been giddy with excitement to cook with Ina or Rachel Ray at age 6.
And I can't imagine a parent who is so awful and selfish as to "take" a terminally ill child's wish, to do something they want to do. Make-a-wish doesn't just accept any child and any wish.
And like PP said, she didn't necessarily have to follow through with the meeting if she wasn't comfortable, but hey, can you at least send an autographed picture and acknowledge a fan in need?
