the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
Hahaha! I just had to laugh at myself because the memory came back. I was home, talking on the wireless house phone with my boyfriend. The phone went dead, so I picked up the cord phone in the kitchen thinking I just killed the battery. It took me another HOUR to realize the whole house was out. lol High School Problems.

the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
I was in King Kullen in Northport and I remember some woman running in screaming that we're under attack & the terrorists have bombed us again because all the radio stations went out. Then some guy said "lady, calm down! There is a blackout from Maryland all the way up to Canada!" She really made the whole store so nervous.
Looking back it was kinda fun at night going to the bar with a group of friends and drinking all their beer that they needed to get rid of before it went warm.

Disney's Animal Kingdrom Lodge! No blackout there. I remember my parents calling and informing us- and their concern it was a terrorist attack initially. How long did it last?

the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
I was on an airplane!
Coming back from a cruise in Florida, and the plane started circling. The pilot eventually announced that MacArthur airport had lost power, and we wouldn't be able to land right away.
We all looked at each other nervously, being only two years after 9/11. The pilot then came on and announced that Long Island didn't have power. A few people starting to panic, and then eventually, the pilot announced that the entire eastern seaboard was without power. We were all terrified that there was another terrorist attack. And we really wanted to land ASAP!
We finally landed, but they couldn't bring us to a regular gate, because there was no power. So they brought out a metal staircase, and we exited the plane Beatle style. Getting our luggage was quite the adventure, because they didn't have power for the carousel. It took forever. The workers just screaming last names on tags on the suitcases, and people pushing and shoving their way to claim their own stuff.
I can't believe that was 10 years ago today! It was surreal.

Re: the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
I had to run to one of the administrative offices in my college and then had a job interview for an internship with a theatre company.
Came out of school (Baruch, in the Gramercy Park area) and it was like....eerie. I thought for awhile we were under attack again. Walked a couple blocks, found someone in a car blaring 1010WINS and realized it was a blackout.
Okay, well....I wanted that intership. Bad.
So I walked (in heels...I hate dress shoes!) from Gramercy Park to the theatre district and the person I was to meet with was still in his office! I was a little sweaty but I shook his hand and said "if I can show up in a blackout, you can be guaranteed that I will be an excellent employee with no problems whatsoever". Got the job on the spot, which was an internship that set me up directly for what my goal in life was - a career in theatre.
Then I had to walk home (IN HEELS, SONOFABlTCH) to Queens...luckily, I ran into my cousin, who had a friend with her that had a bottle of vodka in his bag...we saw some kids along the way setting up a lemonade stand (early entreprenuers?) and paid them for half a gallon full of it. Filled the rest with the vodka, shaken not stirred, and walked and walked....given that 9/11 was only two years prior, we looked at the bright side....at least we weren't under attack again.
Essentially, the blackout might've really been a blessing in giving me a major set of balls to sell myself to that theatrical organization. I WANTED THAT JOB, and I got it!

Re: the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
WOW...I'm feeling old now!
I was at work in SoHo and when we figured out the power wasn't going to come back anytime soon, I walked to Penn Station to see if there were buses. When that proved too chaotic and we didn't get any answers on how we could get home to LI, a group of women and I decided to walk across the 59th St bridge into LIC while constantly redialing our cell phones and pray for someone to meet us somewhere to pick us up!
It was pretty dark by the time we got to Queens and we sat on the sidewalk waiting for our rides to get there!
Afterwards, my parents created an emergency plan for our family for whenever something similar happened or the MTA (subway/trains) were completely down and cell phones don't work: make our way into Williamsburg and wait at the predesignated spot. I also started to keep an emergency bag in the office with some cash, a bottle of water, a snack bar, and a flashlight.

Seriously??!! Wow!!! I cannot believe it was 10 yrs ago!!!!
I was at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead about to pay for something at the Corelle store when everything went dead. Needless to say, getting home was interesting with NO traffic lights working anywhere. Crazy day!

Working in nyc - someone that lived in the city let us borrow his car and we drove ourselves home. I was going on a 2 week european cruise the next day - that was an adventure getting there to say the least.

I was at work. I remember being so nervous thinking it was a terrorist attack against the city. I walked down 15 flights of stairs with my mom and walked from 47th and 5th ave across the 59th street bridge. Which was no small feat since my mom is deathly afraid of heights. I never thought we'd make it across. thankfully my dad was there waiting for us and drove us home.

the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
At work - getting ready to walk down 41 flights of stairs. Thankfully I work in lower Manhattan and lived in Hoboken so I was able to take a ferry home that night - and walk up 10 flights of stairs once they closed the bars for safety reasons.
I was sore for days!

the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
I was working in Midtown on the east side. Instead of trying to get home to LI that day we decided to stay in the city and drink because the bars were giving it away! There were so many people hanging out in the streets. We ended up staying at a friends apartment and then walking over the 59th Street bridge the next day.
There were 5 of us and once we got over the bridge my friend threatened a Taxi to take us home...lol. The Taxi was hesitant because there were 5 of us but he gave in.
