The car you drive....
Sort of a spin off of the status symbols post...
How important is the type of car you drive to you? What would be your trade-off? For example, would you rather drive an expensive luxury car than wear designer clothes? Would you rather drive a Lexus and live in an apartment instead of a house but drive a Hyundai?

Re: The car you drive....
I think the type of car I drove mattered more to me when I was younger. However, there are certain cars that I won'y drive now...but they're not for status purposes.
Who wouldn't love a Lexus truck...

Re: The car you drive....
while I do like the comfort of many luxury cars, I'd rather have the house and a hyndai then a mercedes and apartment.

Re: The car you drive....
I will always go with the cheaper civic, in cash. I never want a car payment, or want to pay anything over 13K, I am in search of a great used deal. I don't need it as my status symbol, not something that is only going to decrease in value.

car status isn't all that important to me. I like my Maxima and i think that is middle of the road.. Although i do not like some of the lower end cars and i wouldn't buy them.
BUT imo i would much rather have a nicer house than a nicer car

Re: The car you drive....
I don't own a car. But the main thing I would want is a SAFE car. Something that doesn't tip over or do poorly on crash test experiments. I'd spend $ on a safe car, but not a trendy one. It just isn't my thing.

Re: The car you drive....
in all honesty, I dont believe on saving on cars, we always look at how safe is the car... we had a pretty serious accident 2 years ago and I believe the car saved my life...

DH is the car whore. I LOVE my Lexus SUV, but I'd much rather drive a cheaper car and have that extra $$.

I could have written this, except that DH pretty much agrees. We look more at the safety ratings and the mpg the car gets.

Re: The car you drive....
I drive an Xterra and my DH used to have an Infinity truck until his lease was up and now we just have mine.
I'd keep my Xterra forever if I could I love it, but when the lease is up DH wants us to get an Escalade, BMW or some other nice truck...which is ok with me
After both of us having trucks we'll most likely always own one. I don't mind spending a bit more on a nice truck..but not for status reasons, just b/c we like the look of them.

Re: The car you drive....
I would pretty much forgo most luxuries for what I really want.
I'd prefer the nice house over car. Nice clothes (doesn't have to be designer) over a nice car. I leave the car, the clothes go with me.
Also from a practical standpoint, nice house appreciates in value - cars do not.

As an owner of 2 Hyundai's I am very happy with the decision DH and I made. I don't think I ever cared about what type of car I drove. As long a it gets me where I have to go.

Re: The car you drive....
Car status isn't important to me, nor is wearing designer clothes. The most important thing to me is having a nice home and having some money in the bank. If I could afford both, I would definitely love to be driving around in a Mercedes as well as having the house of my dreams.

Re: The car you drive....
I drive a nice new car just so I have plent of room for 2 kids and all their stuff. I also LOVE not having to worry about an older car breaking down because of something stupid. We also take long road trip almost monthly so we need to be comfortable.
If I HAD to trade off between a house or car I would take a smaller car but still a new one and get rid of a luxury item at home like heat or electric

Same here (we own 2 Hyundai's too! Our cars are both super reliable, comfortable, brand new, with all the perks you could "NEED" and I am completely satisfied with this)
As a lot of you have said.. what type of car I drive is completely irrelevant to me. I am all about getting a house someday, the means of transporation is an afterthought as long as its reliable/safe

Re: The car you drive....
I drive a 1995 Honda Accord. It was originally my mom's, and she passed it on to me in 2000. I'll drive it until it dies. Honestly, when I need a new car, I will probably get a Honda again. As much as I love more expensive, sporty, luxury cars, I want something safe and reliable that I can afford. Right now, saving for a house is much more important to me.

Re: The car you drive....
I have a convertible now (first one)... and I love it in the summer. Kinda ***** in the winter... but its not too bad cause it also has some good winter things like all wheel drive and such.
I also bought mine used... and that was probably the best choice I made. I bought an 03 with 8k miles (instead of a new 05)... and I got it for over 16k under retail.
I may never buy another new car again.
