This is sad and disgusting. In furtherance of what goal is all of this unnecessary pain and loss? We know that the devastation will hit marginalized communities the hardest....

Re: The First day of school in Georgia
Honestly I would wait to see if they get a spike as people are protesting and no spikes. Restaurants opened, no spikes.

GA had a massive spike. My brother lives there 1/2 the year and has been up here since beginning of June because of the rise...

It had gone down and only 2 deaths yesterday. Positive cases mean nothing as many are not even sick.

Yes but those “not even sick” people go on to infect people who will potentially get very sick and die.

2 deaths two days ago, and 79 yesterday. You can't just pick a convenient day for trends. If you follow the charts, you can see that the weekly trends are consistent. I don't know why, but one or two days a week is in the single digits, followed by several days of high numbers.

My take away from that article is that they opened, business as usual, with no thought, preparation or regard to precautions. Where are the masks? Why are they changing classes at all?

Yes but those “not even sick” people go on to infect people who will potentially get very sick and die.
So we have to stop the world because someone can get sick? People got sick before this from others and we didn’t close up everything. I don’t want people to die but it will happen unfortunately in life.

The First day of school in Georgia
That's why they're being criticized. Masks aren't required. Look at that senior picture: NOT one single mask to be seen. Their state officials are delusional and stupid if they think this won't cause a rise in cases. 2 deaths is 2 deaths too many. The job of government is to protect the people and promote the general welfare, not to take political sides and lead their constituents to slaughter

ITA with the masks. My point was the deaths are low for the spikes the OP was talking about. We are concerned more about positive cases as many don’t need to be hospitalized and how many are not really positive and they are messing up?

Re: The First day of school in Georgia
I think the kids should be wearing masks when not at their desks. But, there are about 730 active cases in the whole county, population of 170k. Their numbers are low. If I lived there I would send my kid, with a mask on.

This is what I’ve heard from many drs, we shouldn’t really be focusing all our attention to the number of cases but instead the mortality rate.

I think mostly just because even if you are positive that doesn’t mean you will have any symptoms, or have very little or even be hospitalized or die. I would never downplay this virus as I know people who have passed and it is bad and very sad. Most live though and to stop the world while the numbers have gone down and are not spiking when reopening many things, it is ridiculous and people are losing so much more.

Masks are not mandatory in GA.
Exactly. That is idiotic.
To you, that makes this ok? SMH

Where did I say that it makes it ok? I was stating that is why they all did not have one on. I can’t see high school not changing classes either. Too difficult to actually do that with so many different subjects and electives.

Re: The First day of school in Georgia
I am now convinced that some of the most outlandish downplaying of deaths, selective number picking, emphasis on anecdotal false positives with no mention of false negatives or asymptomatic cases, and anonymous "doctors" who keep telling us to look away originate on the internet by foreign bots and get picked up by well intentioned real people.
This is how this country is coming undone. Misinformation, science denial, all kinds of denial....We are being turned on one another.
It's hard to watch in real life and on the internet.
I would say that a treatment or vaccine can't come soon enough to liberate us, but dollars to donuts,, bits are being unleashed to convince the easily convinced to eschew science and progress and fear and mistrust those things enough to have this country in the throes of devastation and lockdown even longer.

Many have the experience of this virus to know how live still has to go on. They have been told they were positive and made everyone around them fear and run for tests to only find out, oops..it was a mistake, you are fine. I don’t know who would volunteer their own health for a vaccine that has not been tested for years. I am more worried about that then actually getting the virus. The media is the worst part of this and the doctors go back and forth everyday so why do you think the normal average is confused and getting tired of it? We have opened and haven’t gotten spikes. We have been lied to that there were spikes and then oops..those were mistakes at the lab. I am sure so many kids had this back in January, the ones that were told they didn’t have the flu. This is not going away and we have to adjust to it but go in with life like we have done with every other virus.
