"The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Harvey Karp - useful?

I'm reading this book and I really like what he has to say about the 4th trimester and how to calm babies down with the 5 S's technique. It makes me feel good knowing I have a possible stratregy to use once my baby comes in March.

I was just wondering if any of you have read this book and used his techinques. DH is a little cynical and thinks "if it worked, why isn't everyone doing it?", so I am curious if anyone here has had some experience with the 5 S's.

Thanks!

That book saved my life.

We used the 5 S's religiously to help us through Logan's really colicky period.

The things in there really work!!

I give it to everyone I know who is expecting.

I watched the video. It was by far, the best gift I received and if I had not, I don't think I would have survived! I give it to all my friends!

Overall it worked. I can't say the 5 Cs worked every single time DS was colicky, but more often than not, they did.

Re: "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Harvey Karp - useful?

I agree with every post on here:

- it worked like a WONDER for my VERY colicky baby Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
- we were so desperate for help that DH read the entire book in like 1 night Chat Icon
- it SHOULD be given to all mothers, or at least recommended
- swaddling and shhhhhing saved our sanity, as well as white noise.

It's a god-send Chat Icon They also have a DVD too, I believe.

I only read it after suggestions on here. DS cried all the time and I thought he was crazy and I was going crazy! I did a lot of the things in the book but not all at once before reading the book. Then after reading the book I tried it the way Dr. Karp suggests and it was like I had a brand new child! Now, at 3 months, EVERYONE comments on what a happy baby he is!!!!!

Re: "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Harvey Karp - useful?

never read it just read about it online and of course lif....i did used swaddleme, pacifier sometimes bc she isnt that fond of it, the swing or plain and simply rocking her in my arms which worked more than the swing and from birth i would whisper and say shhhhh in her ear than i realized it was so much easier putting the alarm clock radio to static=)....kaylie has acid reflux which mimiced colic for the first 2months until we started these techniques and of course medicine for the reflux

Same here.

ETA: We watched the DVD right after DD was born too and it was great to see exactly how to do everything.

Definitely worked for us with DD #1. If need be, I will use the techniques with DC #2.
