Re: The price of milk

I paid $1.13 for a quart of S&S brand. Lat week I paid $1.03. Extra 10 cents in one week is ridiculous.

Re: The price of milk

I heard on the news that a gallon of milk will be going up to $5.00 by the end of this year.

I know, it's crazy. On the news they said that a big part of it is due to the price of corn going up, so the dairy farmers have to pass on the costs in order to survive.

Corn is in huge demand now to be used in the production of ethanol for an alternative fuel, but we don't have enough corn to use for both food and energy. So now some corn is being imported to help meet demand.

Re: The price of milk

I had total sticker shock when I bought some last night. Cheaper to actually buy a cow at this point.

Here's one from ABCNews in May

Here's one on the struggle for small dairy farmers

Trying to find the one I saw in the last week or 2, it was really interesting.

Here's a video of a report from June 27th

I think this actually a small part of the reason. from what I have read, the dairy farmers don't establish the price of milk, its based a something called the "cheese barrel" price.

Re: The price of milk

Here's some more about it:

But for milk, at least, the latest surge in prices hasn't been all about corn.

Drought conditions in Australia and New Zealand coupled with significantly lower subsidies in European Union countries have helped sap the world's supply of liquid milk and its various byproducts.

Meanwhile, as people in China and other booming Asian countries find themselves with more money to spend, they want things like fresh milk and milk products, keeping exporters scrambling to find supplies.

"There's just a phenomenal international demand that has moved us to record prices," said Scott Brown, an analyst at the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute at the University of Missouri-Columbia. "That is the reason we continue to be strong in our expectations about milk prices over the next few months."
