The storm about to hit Monday into Tuesday (UPDATE MON 3PM)
Not really a massive deal, but with mixed precipitation, it sucks. So commutes can be ugly, but you don't have to worry about shoveling out of massive amounts of snow.
-What do I need to be worried about? Timing of the freezing precipitation.
-Why do I need to worry about that? Have you ever driven on a sheet of ice?
-Do I need to call in sick? Whatever
-Will my flights be canceled? Do I look like I work for the airlines?
-What is mixed precip? Sleet or freezing rain, some rain, some snow. Just a crappy mess of goo and frozen goo.
-What is freezing rain? The worst thing possible for driving. In essence: it falls as rain, then immediately freezes on any surface (mainly roads and cars) This gives a slippery, shiny, slick surface of ice. If you follow hockey: Think about what the zamboni does between periods.
-What is sleet? Frozen pellets that typically bounce when they fall. THIS IS NOT HAIL! Hail comes from Severe thunderstorms. Do not confuse the two. They are made differently.
-When is this hitting? Precipitation moves into the region around midnight Monday night. Chances are good it will start as snow, since temps should still be cold. As the overnight progresses, the temps are expected to rise. Here is the rest for your area, straight from the National Weather Service:
"LIKELY CHANGE PRECIP TO A MIX OF SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN FOR A PERIOD OF TIME DURING THE MORNING. WITH WARM AIR REMAINING ALOFT AND SURFACE TEMPERATURES CONTINUING TO GRADUALLY INCREASE...FROZEN PRECIP IS EXPECTED TO CHANGE TO RAIN TUESDAY MORNING...FIRST OVER THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE REGION...NJ/NYC/LONG ISLAND...AND GRADUALLY WORKING ITS WAY NORTH THROUGHOUT THE DAY. FORECAST UNCERTAINTIES CONTINUE WITH EXACTLY HOW QUICKLY TEMPERATURES AT THE SURFACE AND ALOFT WARM UP...AND THEREFORE THE EXACT LOCATION AND DURATION OF SNOWFALL/MIXED PRECIP. WITH THIS FORECAST PACKAGE...EXPECTING AROUND AN INCH OR AN INCH AND A HALF OF SNOW NEAR NYC...LESS THAN ONE INCH OVER LI AND COASTAL CT...AND POSSIBLE ADVISORY LEVEL SNOWFALL OVER THE LOWER HUDSON VALLEY. THE GREATEST THREAT FOR ICE ACCUMULATION IS NORTH OF NEW YORK CITY...BUT HERE ACCUMULATIONS ARE LIKELY TO BE LESS THAN 1/4 OF AN INCH."
Let me know what your questions are about the above paragraph. To me it seems clear, but I am sure there are many things in English, Politics and History that seem to clear to you that I haven't a clue what you are talking about. The way it looks now: The areas north of the city could see the heaviest ice accumulation and/or possible snowfall.
Here are your maps to look at. Yes, more than one because it isn't just snow: (I know you come to rely on these and I like that you are all becoming mini meteorologists)
KEEP CHECKING BACK HERE ON MONDAY TO SEE HOW THE TOTALS HAVE CHANGED. ALL DEPENDS ON TRACK OF THE STORM!
TOTAL SNOWFALL:
TOTAL ICE:
TOTAL PRECIPITATION: (Melted Snow+Melted Ice+Rain)
----------------------------------------------------- UPDATE MONDAY AFTERNOON:
BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU LIVE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS!!!!!!!! (Not Long Island, but the rest of you can have an ice problem.) Anything more than 1/4 inch of ice is BAD!!!!!!!! Tuesday does not look good!

Re: The storm about to hit Monday into Tuesday
I have a question, Miss Kelly!
It's a bit off-topic, but I've been curious to know... what snow removal method do you use? During the last storm, I thought of you and if/how you dig out your driveway or your car, or how you make it into work, that kind of thing. For some reason, I imagine you to drive a giant truck with a plow, driving around like snow is a joke. Can you share how you deal with massive snow storms? Do you find it to be as much as an annoyance as we all do, or do you see it differently?

Do you find it to be as much as an annoyance as we all do, or do you see it differently?
Here is the short-short version:
We live in a Godforsaken co-op from hell. We bought here when I was PG and thought it would be good to stop paying rent and invest in a starter place.
Well, the place's value has decreased 50% since we bought. Yes. In 3 years, we owe the bank a crapload of money if we try to sell. And here we were trying to do the right thing by buying. WE ARE STUCK HERE AND I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!
(Straightens my Lucille Ball dress and takes a deep breath)
So, we pay $700 per month in maintenence for a guy to come here and plow us INTO our parking spaces. He truly sucks. All my years of apartment living in Rochester (Yes, I know snow. I laugh in your general direction.) and my parents even living in a townhome in Rochester actually don't get PLOWED IN. It is hard to explain, but the plowers up there know what they are doing. They can actually back-up with snow behind their plows. (Yes, between the plow and truck) GOD FORBID THE JACKOFF DO IT HERE!
So, in answer to your question: We must go out and dig ourselves out. We typically alternate who works what storm. (Yes, my husband is a meteorologist as well) The massive storm that hit last December with 2 feet of snow, he came home in the height of the storm at 1am because he knew I had to get in to work at 8am. He got stuck once he got off the main road and walked his way in for a mile. But I never got out.
The storm on the day after Christmas: SUCKED DONKEY BALLS! We both had to work, which meant our son had to be brought to work. I hate not having any family out here!
The storm we had this week: Luckily I didn't have to work til 5pm on Wednesday. DH went to work on Tuesday evening, as the storm started to hit. I was home with our son who had just had surgery. I called nextdoor to our handicapped neighbor to ask if her 22 year old grandson stayed the night. (We typically dig her car out, along with other handicapped neighbors, so I didn't feel bad asking.) So her grandson dug me out and DH came home Wednesday at 4:30. At 4:35, I left for work.
If anybody asks me when we have family dinners, I will kick their a$$!
Hmmmm. Guess this wasn't the short-short version.

OMGosh!!!
UUuggghhh Kelly! When we rented in Fairhaven, we got "Plowed In" too! Horrible!!! One blizzard, I dug myself out, was half way to work (daycare) and find out the freakin' center was CLOSED! So much for calling your employees early! Uuugggh.
Anyway, I give you and DH so much credit! I really do! Thank You for taking the time to update us on every storm!
I can't wait for the "It's going to be 70 and sunny, not a cloud in the sky" reports!

DH just posted on FB in the past few days about why he doesn't complain about the 90 degree weather. HELLO TO WINTER CRAP! At least we only get delayed at work in the spring and summer due to severe weather. And that typically only lasts a few hours.

Love this! I am from Buffalo so I know exactly what you mean Kelly! They certainly do not know how to plow around here.
