The things my MIL says....
DH's mom came to see us on Monday and she was talking to DS who was cooing and smiling up a storm at her. You know, the kind of moments we all live for and that totally melt our hearts? Well, she was doing it back for a bit and then turned to me and said "All this energy and they won't even remember it!" She went on to say that she often thinks that when she takes our 2 1/2 year old nephew - yes, her other grandson! - out, that she's put so much into it and he won't even remember.
I just kind of smiled and said something like Well, I think it's more about building relationships at this point than memories. But seriously, what kind of grandmother has that attitude to spending time with her grandchildren!?!?! She's such a weird woman! It just makes me sad for the kids really...

I dont think she meant any harm by it. Imean, it was stupid but not malicious.
My MIL said a few weeks ago: DS wanted to go by DH, so I handed him off and she turns to me and says "You see Jenn, no matter how much you do for him, he still loves Daddy more" YEP. You did just read that right. She is lucky I like her, or I would have kicked her.

She's not human, she is British.
They know not what they say! Low on emotional intelligence, like my MIL.

To be honest with you, I don't think that comment was bad. I actually agree with it. My first memory isn't until I was 3 and a half years old.
So I actually do believe we put a lot of effort into birthday parties, everyday stuff and our little ones will not remember a stitch of it. But, it does not mean that I don't enjoy every single second of it! I think at this point, the memories are more for me than my DS.

I totally agree.
I also do it because even though she won't remember it, DD is having fun in the moment.
But-I'm holding off on things like big birthday parties and Disney because I really do want her to remember.

So true!
No, I know it's not that bad. It wasn't really hurtful - this time at least! - but she just doesn't think. It was just a stupid thing to say and frankly I have better things to do with my time if she doesn't appreciate being with him! My mother would kill to be able to pop over to spend a day with him! She's quite selfish and just thinks about what's in it for her, which is just an unfortunate way to approach your relationships with your grandchildren.

Tell her that she may not remember, but every single experience she has helps her to develop. Brain pathways are developing like crazy so the more they are exposed to, even at this young age, the better.

My in laws used to say that all the time to me. They were right (at the time) and they didn't mean it to be mean, but it still makes your heart sink a little. They honestly don't think when they say things and i've learned to just forget it and not even think about it.
