The Wizard of Oz

Has anyone not seen this movie?

The reason I ask was because I was talking about it with a friend, and he had never heard of it or seen it.

I mean it was a tradition in my house growing up to watch it once a year on TV (this is before VCRs Chat Icon)

So I decided to watch it again after many, many years. Man, that movie was made on drugs. A field of poppies, w t f? How do you explain that to a child? Flying monkeys? Meeting strange people following the yellow brick road?

I did always like the ruby slippers, though.

I know it’s a classic, but when you really watch it, you see how messed up it is.

This is such a strange story, but all my aunts were short (there were 5 of them on that side of the family; my family is huge). They weren’t munchkins (I know, it’s not a PC term) or anything, which doesn’t really matter anyway.

Anyway, at my grandma’s wake, my BIL started singing the lollipop song to me and my cousins. We just cracked up. I mean I guess it was good for a wake. I remember laughing so much at that wake and funeral.

But yeah, it’s a weird movie. I’m going to watch it again with the SO tonight. I’m not sure what he will think, but whatever. He seemed interested in seeing it.

Re: The Wizard of Oz

The part where the wickeds witch feet rolled up under the house used to scare the heck out of me.

I dreaded that part.

There are so many subliminal messages in that movie. Even on the surface it is weird AF.

I’ve watched it countless times, sober and not. It’s one of the best but it’s freakin heavy.

My mom is obsessed with it, so I've seen it a lot. I really don't care for it actually.

So many messages and so much symbolism. I was just in disbelief when I watched it again, and I was like I was shown this as a child? It left me scratching my head.

It's actually a very political movie. The things that seem weird are really symbols of things and people that was going on at the time. It's actually very interesting. For example - the scarecrow with no brains represented the farmers and the tin man without a heart represented the businesses that were just starting to build up "industrial" businesses. And the cowardly lion represented Politian's. Even the yellow brick road is a symbol of something - but I forget what.

I definitely shows you how strange and fvcked up Hollywood was back then (and still is). My husband is European so he never saw it until we got married and he Just Didn't Get It.

Ah, that’s interesting. Maybe the yellow brick road means the American Dream? I mean you follow it and follow it, and you don’t really get anywhere.

To a PP, I’m showing it to my European SO, so I’m curious how he will react. I think I’ll have to stop it at times and explain it.

ETA: I’m wrong. From something I read: Farmers wanted to return to free silver to protect them from the economic harm caused by the gold standard. And in The Wizard of Oz, the Yellow Brick Road, representing gold, is a dangerous path. It leads to the Emerald City, representing the link between the gold standard and political interests. And it is full of cracks and holes, as Baum writes. The bricks were "very uneven," and sometimes "broken or missing altogether."

It’s very interesting. I’m going to read the book this week.

Yeah - even the field of poppies have symbolism. I believe there are a few different theories on that one. But after having studied it in college - it makes the whole story/movie much more interesting and not so weird lol

Well, I read that the poppies mean opium (naturally) and that was quite popular back then in certain OTC medications.

But yeah, it’s definitely strange.

My FIL looks exactly like the mayor of Munchkinland, complete with twirled mustache. Height wise, he was only 5ft even.
Given that I am 5'10", it was VERY uncomfortable dancing with him at my wedding.
MIL was very short too, 5'2".

The Wizard of Oz

We were always such big fans, and my children love it!

Now, the teacher in me can draw many parallels to the Granger movement in the 1890's in the US. The movie as we know it strays far from the book (don't they all) so the book is the true representation of the times and what was happening politically (i.e. a Gold Standard to back up monetary value VS a Silver Standard- Baum's story shows Dorothy's shoes as silver, whomever wrote the screenplay changed it to Red)
And so many other connections. I use it as a teaching tool for US History but there are many interpretations.

I just ordered Baum’s book to read. He has a whole series, apparently. I’ll start with the main book. I’ve been definitely looking into the 1890s history with it.

I read ALL of the Oz books as a kid. I devoured them. I think I reread the whole series at least 10 times. ("They" continued it after he died, and I couldn't bring myself to read any of those.)

My parents were really strict with what I watched, but when that was on TV one year, they were so excited for me to see it (out of nostalgia,I think- I had never heard of it) and sat me there, and eventually got up to take care things around the hosed & at one point i started to cry & tryoed to hide it, gripping my teddy near, thinking " this is so scary- why am i allowed to watch this?"

Speaking of movies, the animated Beauty and the Beast was on last night (the one I watched as a kid in the early 90's) and I want to know how no one in 1991 or whenever was like "yes, Stockholm syndrome! For little girls!"

Haha, neither have I. My DH is a HUGE movie buff and is appalled at how few movies I've seen. I can't even tell you how many times I've heard "How have you not seen xxx?!"
