Re: The World Cup Thread
Paraguay qualified very well in SA, beating BOTH Brazil and Argentina so it's not like they are slouches.
Italy, on the other hand, has had some trouble as of late. half the team comes from Juve, half the team is playing On Borrowed Time.
I watch Serie A every Sunday and was still with some of Lippi's choices.
I honestly feel that this was a meeting destined for a tie. they are the two strongest teams in their group, and played for a tie believing they'd have better luck against Slovakia and New Zealand, and the winner of the group could be figured on goal differencial.

Re: The World Cup Thread
I enjoyed the Brazil-N.Korea (excuse me, People's Democratic Republic) game. N.Korea had a crazy defense!
On a side note, I'm glad one of them scored a goal. Who knows what kind of pressure the N. Korean players are under?

I had the same feeling when he scored in the last couple of minutes. Who knows what awaits them back home with that wack-a-doo in charge!!

I agree.
Sadly, almost all of the N. Koreans probably didn't even see the goal as S. Korea has control over the feed. I wonder what the headlines will say in N. Korea. Probably something about how N. Korea is the winner of the World Cup.

Isn't it DPRK? Either way, you are right, no democracy there! I always laugh when communist countries put democracy in there!

Re: The World Cup Thread
we are happy. Argentina is practically assured to go through and win the group.
we were at the Spain defeat yesterday....though they always seem to joke in the WC for some reason.
I was for the host nation. they may be one of the only (if not the first) host nation NOT to make it out of the first round.
US/SLovenia tomorrow!!!!

Re: The World Cup Thread
Did anyone watch the US game today? How exciting - what an amazing comeback. I was screaming in my office! However, the US was totally cheat out of a goal - horrible reffing!

Re: The World Cup Thread
I am so pizzed I missed this game but my husband said it was highway robbery!!!
it's a shame that this bad call determined the match.
so far, the Alg-Eng game is scoreless. the US could really use a draw here.

Re: The World Cup Thread
The reffing this time around, I find to be bad at times and non existent at times. I felt the Germans got all these yellow cards and the ref didn't seem to see the Serbians doing similar things.
I totally thought the US was robbed of that one goal.
The England game was so boring

Re: The World Cup Thread
Wow, there have been some pretty bad calls made by these refs! All part of the game.....
The draw between Italy and New Zealand was upsetting. As much as Italy had the ball though, they just couldn't score. Looking forward to Thursday's game...Forza Azzurri!!!
Looks like the French team is falling apart - they wouldn't even meet for practice today and I think one of the coaches quit as well. (The Irish must be loving this !)
I've been hearing there were some terrible calls during today's Brazil game, but I haven't seen it yet. Waiting for them to play it again later tonight.
It's been exciting so far. A lot of the 'favorites' not doing what was expected...but that always seems to happen.

What a fun game to watch! I really enjoy watching Argentina play! They're such a solid team that I think that Argentinians can start to believe!!!!! I also get such a kick out of watching Diego on the sidelines. He's so emotional and you can tell he is completely vested in his team and his players really respond to him. Darn, I have never seen a coach kiss his players when they come of the field but I watch a lot of EPL and SPL games, so maybe its cultural?
Anyway, while I am still a huge supporter of Spain and the USA, of course, I am also becoming a fan of Mexico and Argentina! I really like watching their games, its good, fun soccer.
And finally, since I am still an angry Ireland supporter, I am happy the French have been eliminated and sent packing. Au revior Les Blues - Les Cheats! Don't let our cleats hit you in the arse on the way out the door!! Now, if ther English were eliminated (is that possible today?) I would feel like I died and went to heaven!!!!!!
USA game on at 9 am today. Myself and my 9 week old daughter are watching! I can't believe that I am letting her watch so much television at such a young age!!!

Magical Indeed! UN-freaking-believable!
I feel like I just watched the end of a fairytale! For crying out loud, I am dying over here!
After the TWO disallowed goals, that is how you win it ! Really, what a team, we should all be so proud!
And, we ended up at the top pf our Table!!! Amazing, so proud of our boys!!!

Re: The World Cup Thread
Wow! It will get more interesting tonight who will play whom! I don't think I can cheer for any one team, my two favourites, England and Germany (maybe) will be in there somewhere...
It's difficult, b/c I'm torn between the US and England. I should cheer for the US being that I am American, but when I was introduced to soccer by my British friends, I always followed them, so they have been "my" team. However, I want Germany to stay in the World Cup b/c I'm here and the atmosphere is great and I have had always had a place in my heart for Germany (studied the language, literature, culture, etc.). But if Germany plays the US, then I'll support the US, for other reasons.
If you read my rambling- Bless you, lol!
Can't wait for tonight's game!

Re: The World Cup Thread
Amazing! What a result.
I was sick at the 89th minute and kept walking in and out of our conference room. I couldn't bear to watch but I'm glad I did! I think my heart just returned to a regular beat.
I'm heading to Ireland next Saturday to meet up with friends from England and I'm hoping we get to watch some great matches together.
