There is a family in great need in Seaford...
..I do not know if i'm even allowed to post about a family in need, but if I can't i guess someone will tell me!!
I will try to keep this as short and to the point as possible.
I posted weeks back about my friend who lives in MD (a few blocks from me) whose mom and dad and 2 younger brothers live in Seaford. Both her mother and father were diagnosed stage 4 cancer at similar times (moms cancer returned after clean scans in decemeber...then the dad was diagnosed stage 4 esophogeal cancer).
My friends Mom just passed away last week..it was awful. Her Dad has maybe 3 months and is getting chemo now.
My friend has assumed a tremendous responsibility. she has been back and forth from MD to Seaford 6 times in one month..and she has two boys my age as well. Her and her husband are paying whatever bills they can for the family to keep things going but its an awful situation. The mom had NO life insurance, the dads salary is not covering the bills and there are 2 kids still at home (17 year old and 21 year old).
My friend is going to have the 17 year old move in with her when he graduates HS in June. She will help pay college tuition for him and do what she can...
But after having coffee with her yesterday and talking for 3 hours, I can't beging to tell you what a nightmare she is living. They have so much hanging ove their heads...things such as the headstone for the moms grave (right now it's just a pile of dirt and she is so so upset that there is no headstone..). Medical bills, LIPA bill, car payment so the dad can get back and forth to chemo etc..
I've started a few local fundraising efforts for her through our sons pre-k (movie night) and we will be doing a mothers day thing here for her familys benefit as well. But its hard to know what to do.
If anyone has advice or would even care to donate, let me know. I know its hard to help a family you don't even know, but the situation is so dire that I told her I would reach out to this site if it were ok with her. Even if people wanted to donate gift cards (They could be small amounts!!) to the family so the boys at home can get some groceries or meals in while they take care of the dad..
Thanks for taking the time to read. I am heartbroken for my friend and her family. They are being orphaned in a span of less than 6 months and the financial burden is just so overwhelming. They can't even sell the parents house because of the state it is in..
And if anyone has ideas of fundraising things i could do please let me know. My mom lives in long beach and i will be traveling back and forth in the next few months and could even try to plan something local for the family

Oh man... I grew up in Seaford, I am so sad for this family
Are the two sons still in school? Have they considered doing a fundraiser through the school?

The 17 year old goes to high school in seaford...all i know is that the school is paying for a yearbook for him and his cap/gown fees and graduation fees which was really nice! But no fundraiser efforts that i know of...

How incredibly sad! I can't even imagine.
I live in Seaford- and I'd love to be able to help organize something- or in the very least, drop off some gift cards for the grocery store, dinners, etc.

That is amazing of you.
How about this...anyone who wants to donate a gift card or a monetary amount of some kind can send to you and one drop off can be done to the house??
Only reason i am suggesting this is because I live in MD and i don't want anyone thinking something fishy about me, lol. NOT that i would hope anyone would ever doubt my intentions...but if you or anyone else on long island near seaford can you a point of reference, maybe it could work??

Re: There is a family in great need in Seaford...
I do think the first thing they need to do is call LIPA, cable, gas, mortgage...all those bills and let them know whats going on. They need to ask if there is any kind of hardship funds available or what can those companies do for them.
They need to document every call. Date time, person they spoke to.
Good luck.

LIPA and National Grid do have assistance programs. They definitely should be able to get help with their utility bills!

Thanks for that..I appreciate it. I know the HS is aware of everything, they have taken over some of the costs for the 17 year old (cap and gown fees, yearbook etc..) which was wonderful.
My friend in the midst of this whole thing drove to his HS and met w/a counselor there for him...
Did i mention how awesome of a person she is???

tell them to take advantage of the food pantries in the area. wherever they live... even if they don't attend the church or whatever -- the people there will try to help you guys out.

The school community is aware of the situation. I can only say so much because it is my understanding that the 17 year old is uncomfortable with drawing attention to his family's situation. He is a student in one of my classes. The social workers, guidance counselors and administration are doing what they can. I can't go into detail due to confidentiality that I am held to. Some of what was mentioned about fees etc. is true, other fees have been "taken care of".
As a school we had no idea until the older sister met with the social worker. The 17 year old did not approach any adults in the community and he had very regular attendance, handed in assignments on-time, was doing very well on tests, etc. so it is a very delicate situation. A monetary collection amongst the faculty was donated to the family. I am unsure about any other fundraising efforts.
I cannot fathom what this family is going through. I know we are doing all we can given the communication the social worker is having through the older sister.
I'm sure they would appreciate any further assistance the community could give them. And thank you for doing anything you can.
To be honest, when I opened this link I wasn't even sure which current tragedy this was. We have had so, so many sad events this year. Social service and the guidance dept are completely overwhelmed this year. I have never seen a year like this in 17 years of teaching

Contact United Way of Long Island
and Catholic Charities of Long Island
I've worked with both in the past and both of them are underutilized resources that have a lot to offer in these situations.

Re: There is a family in great need in Seaford...
Maybe we could set up a paypal account for them for donations? I'm not sure how to do it, but there is a way to do it so that there aren't any fees taken out.
It would make it much easier for someone to donate. Even if it's only $5. I'd like to donate as well, but I am upstate so I could really only send a donation.
for your friend.
