Re: Things your grandparents say (or used to say)...add yours!
My grandfather used to sing a bunch of silly songs:
Mairzy Doats
Shanty Town
There's a shanty in the town On a little plot of ground Where the green grass grows all around, all around. The roof's so worn, So badly torn, That it tumbles to the ground. It's a little old shack, And it's set right back 25 feet from the railroad track, Lingers in my mind Most all of the time, Keeps calling me back To my little old shack. I'm feeling just as sassy As Haile Selassie: If I were a king, 'Twouldn't mean a thing, Put my boots on tall, Read the writing on the wall, And it wouldn't mean a thing, Not a goddam thing. There's a queen waiting there In a rocking chair, Blowing her top on some Schaefer beer. A-looking all around And a-trucking on down, How I want to get back to my shanty town!

My grandmother used to say "A whistling girl and a captain's cat will come to no good end"
Take a long walk off a short pier.
Now you're cooking with gas
Smoke'em if you got'em
A couple was going together ( dating). My brother and I would always ask, where are they going?

Re: Things your grandparents say (or used to say)...add yours!
Grandma tells me stories about when her and my grandpa were "keeping company" (meaning dating). When she's upset about something - she'll say "Oh, Sacred Heart", instead of "Oh God", etc. When I ask her how she feels, she says: "like an old fart" - she's 93.

You look sharp (We were dressed really nice)
always where clean underwear. You will never know when you have to be taken to a hospital in an emergency
Don't let the bed bugs bite (when we went to bed)

Things your grandparents say (or used to say)...add yours!
"you look like who did it and ran" seems to be a popular one. My grandma uses that and "you look like Gravel Gertie"
"you're trying to fit an ocean in a pail" (doing to much at once)
"What should I do stand on my head and spit wooden nickels" (Basically means there not much she can do that would be helpful-I think that's what it means. When I asked as a kid, my grandma would say I was "acting fresh"
"He could put his shoes on the side of my bed" That was what my 101 year old Grandma said after watching Ben Afleck being interviewed. Apparently she found him attractive.

Some popular words:
Schmata- house coat
schmata means rag or old worn out clothing in Yiddish, not house coat. Sorry.

Wait a minute. Hold up. The link is blocked on my work computer but I am dying to know if this is the song I sing to DD. And I have it totally wrong!! If it's the same thing... I thought it was "Mares eat Oats"
I sing to her: Mares eat oats and does eat oats And little lambs eat ivy A kid'll eat ivy too Wouldn't you.
All the while I'm picturing little horses and deer and lambs and goats!!
Is this the same thing?? What is a Mairzy Doats??
It's something my dad used to sing to me, and I thought i "knew" the words!!

And the rest of it was:
If you think this song sounds funny to your ears, a little bit jumbled and jivy, say Mares Eat Oats and Does Eat Oats and Little Lambs eat ivy. Oooooooohhh,

My mom always calls them dungarees and for flip flops, it's "thongs". LOL. So one day, my mom says to my sister in law, "we have the same thongs!" SIL goes, "how do you know what I'm wearing!?! LOL as she feels her ass to see if her undies are sticking out
