thank you for sharingl. I have always been pro-choice but not in favor of late abortions. This really opened my eyes. I think there should be a way that people in this situation should be able to make the choice.
same here. I cant imagine the pain of the women who have to make that choice.

Re: Third Trimester Abortions - extremely long
I stayed at work late to read this- and now I am crying- I was always pro- choice
and now I realize why that ability to chose is so important- no one is choosing to abort healthy babies- no one is going thru that b/c they don't want to be pregant anymore
it's just more pandering to fanatics in this country
I had always said- wait until Bush's daughter gets prego out of wedlock- see how fast she would have an abortion- ok I strayed from the point- but you know what I mean

Yeah and if he had sons we wouldn't be in a war! well maybe -- but never would have even considered the draft, that's for sure!

Re: Third Trimester Abortions - extremely long
Hmmm...what she went through is weird to me, that she had to make that awful decision to end the PG somewhere else ...I say this because. I say this because I was 20 weeks PG when I started dialating. 3cms to be exact, they told me basically there was no way I would not get an infection or make it to a time where life was possible. I did but thats another story, my daughter was still stillborn as well due to not getting enough nutrition, premature lungs.
BUT...When I was in the hospital they asked me ( every day ) if I wanted to be given meds to start labor and ultimately give birth knowing she would not live.
I obviously decided even a 1% chance of her living eas enough to stand on my head for 10 weeks if need be and decided against it, but I did think that in situation where they were more then 50% sure a child would not live that they gave the option to bring on labor.
I guess I was wrong.
As far as what I believe...well for me, I could never do it. I met 3 women in the hospital...2 of them had babies with almost zero brain function, found at 18 weeks and they both decided to carry the baby to term and then ultimately they both died shortly after birth.
Another mother had a similar situation but her child delivered pre term and was lost regardless.
I would follow in their footsteps...
but thats a personal belief...I do think that there should be a parents choice and I stand by that.
That personal stuff said....Thanks for posting this info. It was sad, but good none the less.

this was a great article and I wish more people who are so narrow-mindedly against choice could read it and see what laws like this do to people...
Unfortunately, all choice is in danger of being taken away and put in the back alleys once again...and that scares me...

Why do you consider people who are againts abortions to be narrow-minded? Everyone has there own opinion on every issue effecting the world today, as well as past issues of the world. Peoples opinions do not make them narrow minded, it simply means they have a brain and use it to think and form views.
I understand that it must be a truly horrific and devastating thing to be told your child will either not live or will never be able to have a normal and healthy life. However, I believe life is not for us to decide. (If you are wondering, I AM AGAINTS the death-penalty, as many seem to believe that those usually associated with being anti-abortion are however pro-death penatly.)
True, my husband and I have not been faced with this situation. In fact we do not have children yet. So many will tell me that until I am in that situation, I cannot judge. I disagree...I would not terminate under any circumstance...I know this about myself. Although this decisions is in part a religious belief...it is ALSO most definitely my own free will belief. It is a life, a living breathing life. Not a decisions awaiting to be made.
I am truly sorry for any family who has to deal with this devastating situation. And I do not mean to come off as insensitive to any family who has gone through this and choosen to terminate.
However, I feel that there are too many people in the world defending the rights of the mother, but not of the helpless life growing inside of them.
This battle over who is right in the argument of pro-abortion or anti-abortions will not end. It is a sad fact, but a true fact.
My thoughts go out to any family dealing with this.

Re: Third Trimester Abortions - extremely long
For the record, I don't believe people who are against abortion rights to be narrow-minded. I assume that they belive that life begins at conception and believe all life should be protected. For me, I believe that life does not begin at conception, but the potential for life begins at conception. When weighing factors such as a mother's health vs. the potential baby's health, I believe the living, breathing human being's right supercede all rights. I also believe that we need allowances for the quality of life for the baby once it is born. Bringing a child into this world to suffer for its brief time on Earth needs to be the decision of the parents - not the goverment.
Thank you for posting & for reading the article. I'm surprised people even read something that long.

Re: Third Trimester Abortions - extremely long
Thanks for posting this article. The most frustrating thing about the whole "partial birth abortion" debate- a completely non-medical term by the way-is the idea that ANYONE aborts normal babies so late. It is already illegal to abort after viability in every state. The few states that allow late term abortions have so many requirements to prove its necessity. Repeatedly talking about "partial birth" is only a ploy to make pro-choice people agree with laws that restrict choice.

This is exactly what pro-choice people believe in -- having the right to make a decision. I think the reason many of us believe pro-life people are narrow minded is because they are trying to force their decision (ie, I wouldn't terminate under any circumsance) on other people. In the end, it is a very personal, very private choice and it should stay that way. No one should think they have the right to make the decision for us. That's why is so important to keep abortion safe, legal, and rare.

Re: Third Trimester Abortions - extremely long
I'm not a mother nor am I close to being one. But I've always been pro-choice. However, I never understood fully the idea of late term abortions. Rather hearing it as an abortion for women who were too lazy to deal with it earlier, I never really thought about the ramifications of a ban affecting the women who really truly needed it. Thank you for sharing this article. It brought tears to my eyes and a newer understanding of why it is still a necessary procedure to make legal.

Re: Third Trimester Abortions - extremely long
I was always taught that one of the characteristics that separates man from animal is his ability to reason and choose based upon that reasoning. Why not allow us to use our "God given" ability to make our own decisions. Forcing a couple to give birth to a child that is either stillborn or will die within days of birth is IMO cruel and unusual punishment for both parties.

Re: Third Trimester Abortions - extremely long
I do appreciate the article and reading a viewpoint that brings out a different situation. My heart BROKE for that couple and what they went through. How devestating.
However...I don't like reading responses referring to pro life people as narrow minded or pushing beliefs on others.
Why is it ok to be pro choice, and talk openly about the womans right to choose and "how could anyone take that away" and have the total support of other pro choicers, yet when someone write about being pro life and maybe why they are that way...many times it is ridiculed?
I am pro life for many reasons and will never understand abortion, especially late term. BUT that is ok. Its not for me to pawn my beliefs off on others-you cannot really change peoples minds and that isn't my goal in life. But i have my reasons and that does not make me ignorant, or against women....like another poster stated, I simply believe in the childs right to life-someone who cannot speak for themselves.

The essence of the pro-choice movement is choice -- you have the choice to carry a baby to term no matter what, another woman has the ability to make another choice. The essence of the anti-abortion movement is opposite -- they believe no one should have this choice and that their values and judgements should superseed others' values, beliefs, and free will. That's why people tend to think anti-abortion people are close minded and pushing their beliefs on others -- they are. I suppose you could be pro-life (as in, you would never have an abortion) and still pro-choice (meaning you think others should have that choice). Acutally, I think many pro-choice folks fall in that camp, they just don't label themselves as pro-life since that basically means anti-aboriton in our society.

Very touching article. I always said that i would never have an abortion no matter what the circumstances, so i guess you could say that i am against abortions, However i believe that everyone should have a choice. God gave us free will, and no one should take that away.

Very well said...as someone else said earlier , being anti-abortion for yourself is different than being pro-life for all people.
