Honestly, it's only been a few weeks, but my Kindergarten son seems to be doing fine with it. I think the younger kids are having an easier time because it's all they know, they don't remember it being any other way or learning another way.

Don't be scared.
My son is only in 1st grade, but I really don't find it that terrible. Some days his hw takes 30 min., some days it takes an hour. But, that has more to do with him fidgeting and not paying attention, not the work itself. Yes, the math terminology is ridiculous, but I understand it enough to explain it to him. And I was horrible at math lol
I'm sure the upper grades are worse. Don't panic though!

Its really not all that bad for them. They aren't breaking a preset mind. The more I look at it the more it makes sense to me. However, Texas opted out of it. Only one district in our city uses it but I did research on our Go Math! book and it seems it CAN be common core, however our Go Math! is Texas Modified.
Still I see no issue with how they break down numbers. 78 + 27 .. its just breaks it out to easier numbers to handle like 75+25 =100 easy right... but one has 3 more and the other has 2 more so ok fine.. add 5 = 105. Now the examples I see flying around take that concept down to itty bitty numbers on large large equations which make it seem impossible. But really most people I know still break down numbers to easier 'chunks'. Like when you have a super long list of numbers to add and off to right you add up the right side until you get total then add over to the left side etc..
I have always done math 'different' that the others. I'm sort of happy that this happened (but still glad so far Texas is rejecting the whole common core - for other reasons). I used to ace math tests and fail math homeworks because of 'show your work'. My work always did work, but wasn't the 'taught method' so now its the other way. Kinda funny. (as a reminder, my grade school education wasn't in Texas)

Don't sweat it. Honestly, it's more of a stress on the teachers than anyone else. My DD is in 1st grade now and so far, so good. Kindergarten was really wonderful. She had a great year and did very well. Your LO will be fine.

Re: This Common Core stuff is really scaring the crap out of me!
My daughter is in 1st grade so this is her 2nd year doing common core. We are learning it together and it hasn't been that bad. I look at the examples from the classwork if I get stuck. The teachers have been very helpful too. I took remedial math in high school and college and I was nervous too. But it actually hasn't been bad at all.

Re: This Common Core stuff is really scaring the crap out of me!
Don't stress ahead of time I think there is more of an anxiety issue for the older grades that didn't start out with common core. My DS started K with CC and is now in 2nd grade and have had no issues with it whatsoever and, that seems to be the case with everyone. K HW was 10-20 min max and 1st grade about 20 min max. So far in 2nd grade we are still at the 20 min mark. You might be pleasantly surprised to see it's not that bad!

Re: This Common Core stuff is really scaring the crap out of me!
my son is in 2nd grade, and really so far I have no issues.
Do I agree with every method used? No, are there some days I think the homework is just "stupid"? yes
But at this point I dont mind the common core. and my son loves math.
