This is disturbing! People ignore a hit and run victim
Link to video WARNING: the video is graphic
Soooooo disturbing how people just walk and drive around a man that is laying in the road
HARTFORD, Conn. - A 78-year-old man is tossed like a rag doll by a hit-and-run driver and lies motionless on a busy city street as car after car goes by. Pedestrians gawk but do nothing. One driver stops briefly but then pulls back into traffic. A man on a scooter slowly circles the victim before zipping away.
ADVERTISEMENT The chilling scene — captured on video by a streetlight surveillance camera — has touched off a round of soul-searching in Hartford, with the capital city's biggest newspaper blaring "SO INHUMANE" on the front page and the police chief lamenting: "We no longer have a moral compass."
"We have no regard for each other," said Chief Daryl Roberts, who released the video this week in hopes of making an arrest in the daylight accident last Friday that left Angel Arce Torres in critical condition.
The hit-and-run took place about 5:45 p.m. in a working-class neighborhood close to downtown in this city of 125,000.
In the video, Torres walks in the two-way street just blocks from the state Capitol after buying milk at a grocery. A tan Toyota and a dark Honda that is apparently chasing it cross the center line, and Torres is struck by the Honda. Both cars then dart down a side street.
Several cars pass Torres as a few people stare from the sidewalk. Some approach Torres, but most stay put until a police cruiser responding to an unrelated call arrives on the scene after about a minute and a half.
The police chief told The Hartford Courant that he was unsure whether anyone called 911.
"Like a dog they left him there," said a disgusted Jose Cordero, 37, who was with friends Thursday not far from where Torres was struck. Robert Luna, who works at a store nearby, said: "Nobody did nothing."
One witness, Bryant Hayre, told the Courant he didn't feel comfortable helping Torres, who he said was bleeding and conscious.
The accident — and bystanders' callousness — dominated morning radio talk shows.
"It was one of the most despicable things I've seen by one human being to another," the Rev. Henry Brown, a community activist, said in an interview. "I don't understand the mind-set anymore. It's kind of mind-boggling. We're supposed to help each other. You see somebody fall, you want to offer a helping hand."
The victim's son, Angel Arce, begged the public for help in finding the driver. "My father is fighting for his life," he said.
The hit-and-run is the second violent crime to shock Hartford this week. On Monday, former Deputy Mayor Nicholas Carbone, 71, was beaten and robbed while walking to breakfast. He remains hospitalized and faces brain surgery.
"There was a time they would have helped that man across the street. Now they mug and assault him," police chief said. "Anything goes."
Councilman Matthew Ritter said police can do only so much.
"The citizens are the city," he said. "Everybody has a part to play. Call 911 and reach out."

Robert Luna, who works at a store nearby, said: "Nobody did nothing."
Including you....(and incorrect grammar to boot!)
One witness, Bryant Hayre, told the Courant he didn't feel comfortable helping Torres, who he said was bleeding and conscious.
You could have called the police. You could have reassured him that help was on the way. You could have written down the license plate # for the car that hit him.
Despicable.

Re: This is disturbing! People ignore a hit and run victim
i really can't believe people just walking by like nothing--only glancing for a moment at this poor man. no one bothered to go to him and see if perhaps CPR could help him or even see if he was still alive???
really disgusts me how people act sometimes. my first reaction would have been to see if he was alert, call the cops, and if he was conscious---see if there was anyone who he might want to be called.

Re: This is disturbing! People ignore a hit and run victim
Well, if you are not trained in CPR I would not "touch" anybody either. BUT that is one of the time that a cell phone is actually great to use.... really! 911 is doing something! You call 911. They guide you on what to do. You most likely would not move the victim anyway. Several people can help with the traffic. One person can describe the condition (consciousness or not of the victim, describe the scene,etc...) That's what good samaritans do. They don't have to do CPR if they don't know how to. Helping with the rest is helping.
Disgusting!!!

Re: This is disturbing! People ignore a hit and run victim
I'm sure someone called the police. How else would they have known?
What ticks me off are the people in the cars making U-turns because there was a man lying in the street What an inconvenience

I agree 100%, I would not touch him either, but I would be kneeling next to him talking to him and I would have called the police!! If he was conscious I would have tried to call his family. I would NOT recommend touching anyone, though, unless you're trained - you can hurt them further.

Re: This is disturbing! People ignore a hit and run victim
I saw this this morning on the news. what the h*ll is wrong with people. They should be ashamed of themselves for not doing anything. Even if you don't want to touch the person as least call 911 and try to talk to the person to see if they are alive. What has happened to people? This just angers me so much.

Re: This is disturbing! People ignore a hit and run victim
There is no words for this. It is a disgrace that people can have no heart. I can't believe how many people are on that street and going around him. Geez these people need to take etiquette lessons from NYC people because you know this would not happen there.

Re: This is disturbing! People ignore a hit and run victim
I don't really know what else the people standing there could've done. It's the people driving around the man and then kept on going is what is most disturbing. I looked at the clock and he was lying there for a little over a minute (which isn't very long), although when you watch that video it seems like forever. So sad I noticed that the two cars that hit him actually appeared to be driving really fast to make the right turn. I hope they are caught

Re: This is disturbing! People ignore a hit and run victim
I saw this yesterday after Newsday emailed me an "alert". My stomach turned. I agree with I woulndn't touch the man, but, definitley someone should have called 911! Someone should have STOPPED traffic! Somone should have been next to him, talking to him and contacting his family if possible!

Re: This is disturbing! People ignore a hit and run victim
I saw this on the news last night and was in shock and utter disbelief.
I can understand not wanting to move him or whatever else, but how do you not call police, walk over to him, see if he's okay, whatever...just some comfort.
The poor man

I think its disgusting that people didn't go to his aid!!!!
I hope all the people who did nothing, should be ashamed of themselves.
He is a human being....Help Him!!!!! For God sake. He is a Father and a Grandfather.
This made sick to my stomach to watch the video.
