those of you that are dog owners & are TTC
what kind of dog do you have? how old is he/she? are you a little nervous about dog and baby together?
I ask because we got a beagle puppy (pictures of the beast in my album) in July 08. Now mind you he doesn't do anything in the house, he has the little flap opened so he goes out into the yard whenever he feels like it BUT he's a complete nut. I mean he jumps, he owns the house, his toys are everywhere. He already ate my couch pillows, my coffeetable and carpet. I know he's young, (9 months) but I just get a little nervous sometimes. Anyone with me?

i have a 2 year old lab.. (Shea)
i actually am worried a little bit.. we had our 6 month old nephew over to babysit and i honestly didnt trust her.. not that she would hurt him in anyway, but Shea is very hyper and likes to jump.. we HOPE that she keeps her paws to herself , otherwise we dont know what to do

Re: those of you that are dog owners & are TTC
I have a shitzu/yorkie mix - she is amazing with my son and ALL kids.
My dog who we had when my son was first born was much more fresh then this dog- so I'm not going to lie it was really hard at times. Unfortunately, she got hit by a car when my son was 4 months old so we'll never really know if she would have grown to love him - which I think she would have!

Re: those of you that are dog owners & are TTC
I have a beagle (who is 6) and black lab mix puppy. I am not worried in the least bit. Especially not with my beagle. He is the most gentle, tolerate dog ever. But he also grew up around kids (nieces and nephews). He actually use to sleep under my nephews crib when I lived at my parents house and my mom babysat. The black lab is a little hyper and still very puppy like - but, I think she would be fine. I think the first couple of days I would have to watch them and let them get used to the change - but other than that, I'm not worried.

Re: those of you that are dog owners & are TTC
We have an Italian Greyhound, Lilly. She's a year and a half old right now.
She is very hyper, but a super snuggler. She's good with commands, so we are hoping that when and if we are blessed with a child, she will be good with them as well.
We're hearing that the IG's calm sown significantly once they turn 2 - she'll be 2 in May.

Re: those of you that are dog owners & are TTC
We have a dog.
My biggest worry is that she won't get as much attention as before. She is my WORLD and I always hear stories about how that changes once you have kids - and that's what upsets/worries me the most. I want her to have all the same amount of love that she gets right now...
I know our child will love her as much as we do! I am sure she will love our child too!

it definitely changes, sandy was our first baby but once the "real" baby comes, they demand all of your attention. Sandy still sleeps on our bed and we take her to the dog park frequently. She knows we love her and she, in turn, loves Mikayla

Same here . I am not worried about her at all, but I know she will be so sad when she is no longer the center of attention anymore

Some tips from a BTDT mommy:
Bring home somthing from the hospital (a towel, blanket or onesie) that the baby had worn to get the dog used to the baby's scent
When you come home from the hospital have your dh bring in the baby, you walk in first and greet the dog. Then have dh come in with the baby in the carrier and let the dog sniff the baby (keep the dog on the leash while you do this)
In my experience, most dogs will catch on quick and be fine with the baby

Re: those of you that are dog owners & are TTC
we have 2 boxer/pitbull mixes and they are both total mushes with people. The only thing that worries me is that one is a puppy, well 1 year old and she jumps up on things and ppl a lot. we are trying to get her to stop but it hasnt been easy. They are also huge lickers so I'm afraid they might suffocate my baby with their tongues!!!!!!!!

Re: those of you that are dog owners & are TTC
It sounds like your puppy needs some obedience classes, they will help. I have 2 dogs..and the 2nd one needed obedience classes, he wasn't really bad, but he needed "direction". He did very well and his behavior improved tremendously. Baby or not, he needs to stop chewing things he's not supposed to.
Of course, you should always have some concern, after all, they are animals. But I do not worry about my 2 dogs that much, particularly my female ROttie. She love children, she's very protective with babies in particular. She had puppies before we got her, so she's very motherly.
The 3 year old likes kids and babies, he has no problem with them. Of course, he doesn't live with them and ahve to share his Mommy, but he'll figure it out.

My dogs are cavapoos (mix of Cavalier King Charles spaniel and Poodle). There 2.5.
They had just turned 1 when DS was born.
My dogs are perfect with DS. They love all kids. They love anybody but they are so excited when kids come in our house.

Re: those of you that are dog owners & are TTC
Yes we have 2 dogs. One is a pull bread mini pin and the other one is a fox terrier mix.
I am completely nervious with one of them and thats my min-pin and thats why he will be going to live with my FIl when children come in the pictures. Its the best for him. He doesnt do well with young children, he has already tried to bite my 9 month old neice several times. I dont want to put my child in that situation and i also dont think its fair to him to be that stressed to feel the need to bite. We have had a trainer come and in and tell us, they cant do anything for him . But luckily he know he will be going to a good home when the time happens

We did this & our cocker spaniel has been fine w/ DS. We never leave them alone together, she was a rescue dog & we don't know her history. She has been protective of me & the baby, though.

We have a bullmastiff who will be 7 months this week. He is HUGE already! I teach childbirth classes and I always tell my clients with dogs the exact same thing above. The only difference is the leash. Unless you always put your dog on a leash when someone walks in. Believe it or not dogs have an instinct. Within a day or two, the dog will be napping right by where your baby is sleeping. What you really have to watch out for is when other people come in...the dog will become very protective of the baby.

We have a 2 year old shih tzu. He is amazing with kids! He is around them all the time with my friends' kids and nieces and nephews. The only problem I see is that he is obsessed with toys and he might have a hard time distinguising his own from baby toys.

Re: those of you that are dog owners & are TTC
We have a 10 year old husky. She was always great with DS, but we did have an incident a couple of months ago where DS gave her a treat and then went to take it away and she grabbed his hand. He had a decent cut from it, but it wasn't an aggressive attack on my dog's part. she was just reacting. Now Ds is not allowed to give her treats without us helping to make sure there are no further incidents.
