Re: Those of you who moved away from family...
It was very hard...I still miss seeing my dad and sister whenever I want TERRIBLY...I am very close to them
All things considered, I am glad that we made the move to NC but I do miss my family alot. My mom wound up moving to GA a year after I moved so she is only 4 hours away and my IL's are in charlotte, like 10 minutes away
I am hoping my sister and BIL move down south one day....my dad...I think he will stay in NY....
I make sure to visit once a year but it is not the same

Re: Those of you who moved away from family...
when I went away to college it was different because I was able to come home whenever I wanted, I wasnt far away...about 1 1/2 hours...
then I stayed in CT- still not too bad...
BUT, in two weeks I am going to be Georgia-I know this is going to be extrememly difficult for me... especially since I wont have friends or family around...

Re: Those of you who moved away from family...
I was 18 so I was like "LATER LOSERS!!!!" LOL!
I moved from here to Colorado.
I loved It!! I always told myself I would never live in NY again but I missed my family dearly so after 5 years headed back here.
I miss it but I cant pass up being around my fam
You definitely appreciate NOT being in NY but at the same time if you are close to family it is definitely hard.

Re: Those of you who moved away from family...
I couldn't wait to get out and for the first few years I was away, I loved it. But I left home for college and with the exception of one summer, never really came back.
As I get older I get more sad that I can't see them all the time and more homesick.
But I don't anticipate ever moving back to Delaware, nor do I think they will move to NJ, so we deal with it the best we can.

Re: Those of you who moved away from family...
It is a little hard for me, but more because I have a child. My ds LOVES my parents and saw them every day when we were in NY. I feel bad that I moved him so far from them, but I know it was the best decision. The good thing is that we see each other every month or every other month. They come here or we go up there. Do I miss them in between? Of course, but time goes so fast that it doesn't seem that bad. We also talk on the phone almost every day and we have internet cameras hooked up that we can see each other and talk. That makes it a lot easier. I am also lucky because my bil and sil and nephew live here and we have been very close. It makes it a little easier to have some help and family here. My fil is also here, but I swear I see my parents more. Anyway you have to do what is right for you, everything else falls into place.

OMG it was sooooooooooo hard, it still is for me ..I've lived away from them for 6 years now and I still get emotional when I leave or they leave from a visit...I've actually been contemplating moving closer to them again, but I'm not sure if thats the right career choice for me

Re: Those of you who moved away from family...
When we lived in VA, it wasn't so bad because we could drive home for the holidays to NY to see my family. But now that we're in CO, we don't get to see anyone very much, and we have no family at all here. It's not too bad except for at the holidays. We spent Christmas alone with the baby

Re: Those of you who moved away from family...
it was hard and they left me! They miss us terribly as do my in-laws..
We still cry when we leave each other and my parents are broken hearted each time we leave each other.
I know this doesn't help you if you have to relocate but it's the truth. I miss them a lot and they've been gone 10 years..I can't imagine how I will be when I have a baby..that's why I'm thinking of moving them back here although it may not be the best financial choice..
sometimes it's not always about the money.

Re: Those of you who moved away from family...
I am actually dealing with this now but with my parents moving away from me. For financial reasons, they will not be able to stay on LI much longer & a perfect house came under their noses this weekend in Maine. It is 2 houses from my brother & perfect for them! My mom doesn't want to leave me as we are best friends. I get all teared up whenever I think of it bc I don't know what I will do with all my family gone & only my DH's family here. But I know it is for the best. I am trying to be strong & not let me mom know how I feel. Luckily JetBlue flies to Portland for $69. But it will be hard & time consuming to see each other

Re: Those of you who moved away from family...
I moved to Boston, right after college, as I went to Umass.
To be honest, it is not that hard, since it has been such a long time- around 8 years away, but at times, I wish I was closer to home

I moved to London and it is VERY hard for me... The thing that keeps me going is the thought that we'll be moving back eventually (hopefully in the next year)

Re: Those of you who moved away from family...
It was hard sometimes bc I had no family here. I talked to my mom every single day. I missed my family terribly and went home every chance I got. I think going away to college helped a little too bc I was used to not living with family.
I met DH 3 months after I moved here. And once I started making friends, it got alot easier. I've been in Chicago 7.5 years now and I'm so happy I did it. My parents are now thinking of moving here to be closer to my kids.

Re: Those of you who moved away from family...
Harder than I thought. I got used to not seeing my brother's cause they moved far away long before I moved out, but being away from my parent's....and now my large extended family who I used to see every weekend, or every other. It's hard. I see my extended, if I'm lucky, twice a year. My parents - we try for at least every month and a half for a visit, but it's hard on them to drive down to LI during winter months.
I sometimes have had regrets, but I wouldn't trade DH for anything....and he makes moments count when we visit with family, and has actually agreed to a few more visits upstate this year to see the family, since he knows I miss them!

Re: Those of you who moved away from family...
I haven't lived near my immediate family in a long time. I talk to my mother and father on the phone every day, and that habit makes the distance much easier to handle. (As does the fact that I'm always busy with my job, my friends here, etc.) Also, I see them at least twice a year, and now that I'm pregnant, I think they will come to see ME (as opposed to the other way around) more often.
I see my sister less frequently due to work schedules and whatnot. That sucks.
The transition was difficult. I felt homesick a lot at first, and some days, I still do. But you really can get through it. Remember that phone calls, visits, and even e-mail can keep you close!

Moved to FL alone when I was 25, moved back in 6 months.
Because I missed my family terribly, I flew home once a month....we are insanely close though.

Re: Those of you who moved away from family...
I'm an hour away and at first it was hard but now, not so much. I guess because I know I can go home a lot..and I do. I just wish that people came to visit me a lot more.
