I have to say don't go down to Florida (well I guess south Florida thats all I know) cause you think it's "cheaper" it's NOT. We looked at houses down there and the houses around my SIL were MORE money then the houses here! The houses in Port St. Lucie are still less then here BUT it's an hour North of bolynton/delray area.
I totally agree with this- we were looking there- while prices have come down alittle ( I found more houses at christmas then I did in July)
I still didn't find much under $500K in the Palm Beach area- and then that's $10K in property taxes!
most houses in gated communities with good schools- boca, wellington- are all very expensive- $600K to $1M plus- then add the property taxes and HOA fees- way more $$$$$ then NY
I don't agree 100%. Yea there are developments in boyton where my DH's brothers IL's live where the houses are in the $400-600k range, but then there are developments that are affordable. My friend just bought a 3-bed house in a development in west palm beach for $270k (less than 5 yrs old) and DH's cousin bought a brand new townhouse in boynton for mid-$200's also!

june262004 - Is your DH's whole family down there? That is exactly our situation, DH's fam is in FL (IL's have house in NY and FL) and my fam is here in NY.
That is our EXACT situation with the exception of my brother who lives down there. He moved down there a long time ago. He lived in Colorado for a while and that got to $$$ so he moved to Florida BOY did he make the right choice He bought at the perfect time.
Since My DH family was there and my brother was there (alone since my family is all up here) we looked down there but the prices were just to expensive for me to leave everyone.
I know If I moved down there my mom would probably follow since both her kids would be there, but we decided to stay here for a while. Bought our house here at the peak time and now we couldn't sell it cause we'd lose money oh well.

Im sure they bought in really nice Areas BUT having said that South Florida is funny sometimes you have to be really REALLY careful.... Like if you look on Realtor.com you will see cheap houses but almost every town down there has a "good" side and a "bad" side. Bad side being the side that you wouldn't even want to drive through during the day.

Oh i know! But i went to both when we were down there last month and both were gorgeous! Great areas, beautiful developments, etc. I would move to either one in a heartbeat. The condo community that DH's cousin bought in boynton is even gated!

Yes my SIL works in the schools so she did lots of research. Sometimes you come across a good school. The schools her kids go to (she's got 4) are A+ schools.

Yup, we heard that can be an issue down there. But we have years to worry about it!

We live in the panhandle in Navarre which is right smack in the middle of Pensacola/Gulf Breeze and Ft. Walton/Destin.
We love it. I'm a SAHM so I no longer work and Dh works on Hurlburt Field/Eglin AFB.

Re: Those that live in FLORIDA....
My DH's whole family except one aunt live in FL. My MIL lives in West palm beach in a nice but affordable senior community-she is retired. My older BIL & his very young wife rent in Boyton Beach. They run a "dating service" My other BIL & his wife & three kids moved to Wellington from Lake Worth three years ago. They are in "the most desirable community" in Wellington. Their neighborhood is gated & has a crazy community center including gas station, food store, nail/hair salon & a few other shops that are just for the residents. All of my nieces ride horses & compete nearby. My SIL says she's a little disappointed by the schools & my oldest niece liked her old school better. My BIL's property taxes just went up about $4k per year and their insurance is crazy even with a 20k deductable. They also have community fees. My BIL owns a pest control company for 10 years and went from 20 employees before the hurricanes to 5. He just layed more people off last week. He calls us all the time to tell us his business is dying. My SIL is a SAHM. Their house is for sale & they just lowered the price 100k because after 6 months on the market they only had 1 showing. I have a cousin living in WPB, he's a glazier & he rents. My Aunt & Uncle bought a house in WPB but didn't move down yet, the house got messed up in a storm & they've been waiting almost two years for the insurance company to come through. They can't sell it, because its wrth about 75k less than they paid in 05. I think those communities that are like cities are so popular because sometimes a scary neighborhood is right outside or around a corner. I have relatives on the west coast that haved lived around cape coral for 25-30 years. They are happy enough, I find that area of FL to be especially trashy.
My DH has talked often about going there "someday" but it isn't happening with me. He misses his family & I understand that but I think Florida is really nice to visit but I KNOW I wouldn't want to live there. We bought & flipped a few houses there in 2003-04 & I spent enough time there to see if I liked it.

For someone who's neighborhood has been called names before and who was very hurt I think you should know better then to make a statement like that and hurt peoples feeling

Wow I just looked up where you were and didn't realize the panhandle extended so far west. We never considered the panhandle, but it looks beautiful there! Thanks for the info.
