those w/ children that started out as large babies

is your child still on the bigger side? My 3 month old little guy weighed in yesterday at 16lbs 15oz....just curious if he will continue to be big. He eats a ton! 8 oz bottles give or take! Funny thing is he was born as a peanut 6lbs 12oz. My husband and I were both big babies at birth ....over 8lbs....husband grew to be a skinny skinny kid. I was an average size kid....

DS was a little over 8 lbs. when he was born, not that large, but he was just under 23 inches long. He is still long now, but on the thin side.

Re: those w/ children that started out as large babies

Good question, I would love to know. My DD just weighed in at 6weeks at 11.6lbs. She has gained 4.2lbs since birth, and was a mth early also.

Re: those w/ children that started out as large babies

DD was 9.7 when she was born. At her year check up she was 22.4lbs. Her weight tapered off or should I say slowed down a lot when she started eating solids and walking.

DD was 8.9 when born, she definitely tapered off and is now is the 25% for weight (has been since around 6 month checkup).

Ryan was 9lbs 4oz when he was born, and has always been in the higher percentile on the growth chart. At almost 3, he weighs 37 lbs and is 39 inches.

Re: those w/ children that started out as large babies

My son was about the same at 3 months and was eating 8 oz bottles too. He grew very quickly, but he is also tall, so although he is 95th % for weight, he is also 95% for height, so he looks proportional, just big.

At his 1 year visit, he was a little over 28 lbs. He isn't gaining as fast now, and once he started moving around a lot more, he slimmed down. He's been in the same size clothes since he was 10 months and he is now 13 months.

Re: those w/ children that started out as large babies

My son has basically been off the charts since he was born (at almost 10lbs)

Now, at 18 months we find out on Thursday how much he weighs - but at 15 months he was 29lbs. I'm thinking he is 32lbs at least. He is very very heavy! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: those w/ children that started out as large babies

DS was 9lb 14oz 22.5 inches at birth (on his due date) at his 1 year appt he was 30lbs and 31.75 inches. So he has always been 90%+ usually over the 95%tile.

My niece who is 7, was born at 9.13 and 22 inches, she was a chubby baby but now as a "kid" she is pretty average in size.

Re: those w/ children that started out as large babies

DS was born at 11 1/2 pounds, 2 weeks early. (No, I did not have GD) He was 22 1/2 inches long.

Now at 16 months he is tall and skinny. He is only 24 1/2 pounds and over 34 inches.

But in my family, we give birth to big babies that become tall skinny kids.

DD #1 was 7lbs 12oz BUT 3 weeks early, so I think that is big. She has always been either off the charts or in the 95+ percentile. She is 7 years old and still up there.
DD#2 was 2 weeks early and 9lbs 3 oz and is now at 8 months 23lbs(last visit) and 28 3/4 inches.Chat Icon

DS was born 9lbs 7oz and he was 3 weeks early. I'd say he was big!! He had a chubby, little boy face and body up until he was nearly 3, and then he got tall and thin!! Now's he's a little scrawny nothing!

Re: those w/ children that started out as large babies

Kaitee was 8 lbs 7 ozs and 19.5 inches at birth. At her 4 month appointment she was 16lbs 12ozs and 25 inches. At 1 year check up she weighed 22 lbs 3 ozs and was 29 inches. At her 2 year check up she was only 27 lbs and was 35 inches tall. She is on the taller side and thin. At 29 months old she is only 29 lbs!

Brooke was 9 lbs 3.7 ozs and 18.5 inches at birth. She was 24 inches tall and weighed 15 lbs and 9.6 ozs at 2 months old. She was 19lbs 3 ozs and was 25.25 inches long at 4 months old. At her 1 year check up she was 30 inches and around 25 lbs. Now at almost 15 months old she weighs around 27 lbs. Her weight gain is really slowing down now.

Once they start crawling and walking their weight gain slows down a lot!

Re: those w/ children that started out as large babies

SIL's nephew was HUGE... he was almost round for the first 2 years or so. He was delayed with walking because he weighed so much.

He's 5 now, and is very trim and athletic.

I think DC settle into their proper weight once they start walking a lot. The first year or so, they don't have the ability to work off a lot of the calories they take in. Once they start walking, they can burn off the calories, and settle into the weight they belong at.

DD was 9 lbs 4 oz at birth. DD was in her snugride carrier still at 10.5/11 months. At her 15 month appt she was only 21 lbs 13 oz. I haven't taken her for her 18 month appt we were supposed to go on thursday but she is still sick with the stomach bug - I had weighed her at home around Christmas and she was 23 lbs but at the peds on Monday she was only 21 lbs 14 oz but he said she will rapidly gain weight back when this whole thing ends.

Re: those w/ children that started out as large babies

DS was 9lbs 3oz at birth and 22 inches long.

At his last well visit (5 months) he weighed in at 17.8 and was in the 75th percentile. He was gaining more than one pound a month initially. But last month he gained exactly a pound. So he is starting to taper off. We go this Friday for his 6 month check up. I can't wait to see how much he weighs now.

Re: those w/ children that started out as large babies

Oh I just had DS's well visit yesterday and he is also 16lbs (up from 6-8 at birth!!). He was also taking 8 oz bottles, but the ped said to give him 6oz bottle more often (more for the reflux, not weight). I was wondering if he will thin out eventually- the kid has at least two chins and thunder thighs!! However, I have a picture of me at 6 months and I was HUGE!!! Guess it runs in the family (and I turned out to be a tall skinny kid).

Re: those w/ children that started out as large babies

Jack was born 9 lbs 11 oz and 22 in (1 week earlyChat Icon )

at 3 months he was 17 lbs 9 oz and 24 in

at 2 his 2 year appt he was 33 lbs and 36in

He has consistently been at the 90-97%ile for both height and weight. (currently at 95th for both) The Drs have no concern about his size since he's in proportion for himself and has been since he was born. The funny thing is I'm 5'2 and DH is 5'7. We have no idea where this giant is coming fromChat Icon

Re: those w/ children that started out as large babies

Both of my boys were over 10lbs at birth and they have always measured big. They both ate a lot when they were babies. Now, my older one who is almost 5 yrs old wears Boys size 7/8 and shoe size 1 and my younger one was 2 in September has been wearing 4T for a while now. He's been measuring bigger than his big brother! LOL! He's going to end up taller and he's going to be tall. Chat Icon Chat Icon So, yes, my kids started out BIG and are still BIG, but neither of them have any fat on them. They're just big! Chat Icon

Re: those w/ children that started out as large babies

Both my kids were over 9 lbs. Robbie stayed just around the 100th percentile for the first year - but gradually started to move more to average. He's 7 now and is in the 80th percentile for height and 50th for weight. He wears a size 8 slim in pants and anything from an 8 to 10 in shirts.

NoNo is tiny - he had that big birth weight - but he steadily decreased to below 'norm' from 6 months on. He's now 5 and only in the 15th (I think) percentile for height and weight. He wears a size 4 pants and shirts are usually 5-6.

ETA: My husband and I are both not tall.. so I don't think that either of them are going to be more than average in the end!
