Those who are not BFing but plan to pump and supplement with formula
What are you planning to do in the hospital?
I am not breastfeeding. We are planning to rent a hospital grade pump for use at home. Should I bring this to the hospital? Or should I just give the baby formula while in the hospital and pump starting when I get home? What about the colostrum? Does that come out well with a pump and can it be taken from a bottle by the baby?
With all the info out there about breastfeeding only and bottle feeding only, there really isn't much info for those of us that want to give the nutrients/benefits of breastmilk (by pumping) to our baby without actually breastfeeding.
For moms already out there: have you tried this? How did it work out?
Thanks!

I pumped. They give you a pump in the hospital that is super strong. I would just use there's while there.

Colostrum really isn't something that you can pump...it isn't that abundant.
Go to Kellymom.com. It's a great resource for pumping.

Re: Those who are not BFing but plan to pump and supplement with formula
I pump exclusively. I used the hospital one while I was in the hospital, and hubby picked up the rental after he dropped the baby and I off at home.
You won't get much pumping the first few days and that's okay. You'll just get the colostrum until your milk comes in. The nurses in the hospital said to pump, give that to DD, and if she is still hungry, then give her formula. We only had to give her formula for a day or two - after that I made more than enough milk.
Hope that helps!!!

Re: Those who are not BFing but plan to pump and supplement with formula
Your milk in those first few days is full of colostrum, your body knows what your baby needs and your milk will change constantly to meet your babys needs. The milk in the first few weeks will be much yellower and richer than the milk in the upcoming weeks. I started pumping at day 3 in the hospital, and colostrum does come out as well as when your milk comes in. I had a Medela symphony pump, and it kept my milk supply going for 8 months, I pumped exclusively for 8 months and my son had no formula. It was the hardest job I have ever had!
Good luck, pumping is incredibly hard, breastfeeding is much much much easier and convenient!

Re: Those who are not BFing but plan to pump and supplement with formula
Thanks for your replies. I guess I will use the pump they supply you while in the hospital and then use the rented one once we get home. But do they supplement with formula in the hospital then, since it seems like the colostrum may not be sufficient when pumping?
Racheeee-Wow! 8 months. You have my full admiration for doing it for that long. With your comment about breastfeeding being more convenient, do you mind me asking what kept you from breastfeeding? I haven't come across many people who are doing this in real life. I know it is a personal decision, and for me I get some weird looks or comments like "why would you pump when you can just breastfeed?" Um, a: none of your business and b. if you must know, I don't feel comfortable with the whole breastfeeding thing and would like to at least give my baby the nutritional value of breastmilk for a bit.

it depends on your specific circumstances. generally, what you make is enough to satisfy them. however, if your baby develops jaundice, they will probably supplement, as the more fluids they get in them, the quicker the jaundice will go away. My DD had formula for a few days (she ended up in the NICU due to her jaundice).

You can ask, my son was tongue tied and couldn't latch on. I tried every day for almost 5 months to get him to BF, with no luck. It was a constant struggle. There are different hormones when you pump than when you BF, ie you will most likely get your AF sooner, and I don't believe your BM will change as much as if the baby BF's from your breast. But you have to do what you think is best. I kept pumping more out of being scared of my supply going than anything else. Would I do it again, personally, No. But good luck to ya! (broken record time) I had to lug a huge pump on vacation with me, when I travelled (even just for the day) I had to carry a pump, I was a slave to it! Again, I am not being negative, just realistic. I would have dearly given anything just to whip out the boob and put the kid on...next baby. Next baby.

Re: Those who are not BFing but plan to pump and supplement with formula
I BF at the hospital. Then I try when I come home but I don't produce much. I also pump for als long as I cna but again, I don't produce much. My boobs bever get huge and engorge. Usually by a month, I'm done pumping and trying. I am hoping this time I'll be more successful with my milk supply.

Re: Those who are not BFing but plan to pump and supplement with formula
I plan on pumping at the hospital and having them give the baby formula at night if i couldn't pump enough milk.
Then i'll continue to pump when i get home and see what happens. If possible, we're going to continue to try to give formula at night.

Re: Those who are not BFing but plan to pump and supplement with formula
I'm so confused about pumping in the hospital...the milk doesn't typically come until the 4th day...so for those first few days how could one possibly pump colostrum?? I breastfed for a short while in the hospital and I'd say a teaspoon total of colostrum is produced. And its thick! How could a pump take the colostrum into a bottle??
Sorry to sound ignorant, I am clueless as to how women pumped in the hospital. I would think it would be more successful when home, but i do know you need some sort of stimulation to produce...I would prob do formula in the hospital and pump when i get home next time around. With my son, my milk definitely came in on the 4th day, no doubt about it! And that was with only breastfeeding for barely a day..

You can pump that syrupy colosturm, I wouldn't have thought it either, but you can. When I was in hospital I was always in the pumping room with this lovely girl who had her baby, and the baby was whisked away to another hospital as she had heart problems. Anyway, she was told by the midwife to pump the colostrum as it was good for her baby, she got small amounts of it, but it visibly was there!

Honestly i plan on going with the flow! No pun intended! Seriously it varies person to person. My SIL's milk came in before she had my niece so she was able to do it. But who knows what's going to happen with me. I'll just see how it goes!

Very interesting! I really had no clue anything would really go into a pump with just colostrum. I couldn't see what was going on of course when i tried to BF johnny...they told me it was minimal those first few days..good to know!
I plan on giving pumping a go the next time around so this is good info!
