Those who drive a Honda Odyssey please read...need feedback!

I always said that I would never get a mini van but I am about to eat my words.
My CRV is due next month and I have two small kids under 3. DH & I are planning on having a 3rd in the next year or two. So a mini van seems a great way to go in our future.

We got a great deal to finance a 2012 Honda Odyssey EX. I was considering a Pilot but they are basically the same price. Any opinions, thoughts, comparable cars to consider, etc. It is a big purchase and I need to make sure! ThanksChat Icon

You won't be sorry. The space inside the Odyssey is truly unbeatable. I have an 05 and it has really served me well. I won't get another since my kids will be probably 10 and 8 when we are ready to get rid of it, and by that point we won't need it.

hands down, go with the Odyssey!

I have two words for you: AUTOMATIC DOORS Chat Icon

They are ahhh-mazing and I don't know what I would do without them. The kids load themselves into the car.

I was anti-minivan before we got it and now I would never go back!

Re: Those who drive a Honda Odyssey please read...need feedback!

We love our 2011 Odyssey. We seriously considered the Sienna too, but it feels cheaper inside and the Odyssey seemed more roomy. We took out the optional middle seat in the middle row for now, but that also would add another seat into the car. We also looked at the Town and Country, but the Stow and Go seats in the middle made the rear people have no leg room.

Be sure to get the version with the automatic doors, it makes the lift gate easier and you really need the backup camera (it's such a big car). We didn't get the entertainment package, we didn't think it was worth it.

I have a pilot and I'm looking to get the odyssey. Yes the pilot is nice but its not like a minivan. With small kids, I want sliding doors, I want to be able to crawl in the van to strap them in. I think a van is the best way to go with smal kiddies and I'll definitly be getting one within a few years.

Yea but thats a lot more than all the others Chat Icon I was just wondering because some of you came out of AWD if you find your tires spin or the handling isn't great in all kinds of weather?

Odyssey! I too am a never-mini-van-former-CRV-driver. I was converted in a week.

My DH just got a used MDX, which is basically a Pilot. It is fine for the every once in a while drive but it is basically impossible to get to the 3rd row bc of the car seats, rendering it practically useless.

No, we bought good snow tires to make up for that.
Also, the Sienna has run-flats and no spare. DH was much more comfortable with the Odyssey having a spare. He is not a fan of run flats (and that's the industry he works in)

We have the Odyssey and we absolutely looooooove it. We have two kids (and a mother in law) that we tote with us everywhere. Plenty of space, great to drive, good gas mileage if you get the ECO mode. I wouldn't consider any other vehicle as my family car.

Agreed. We don't have any slipping issues and we are not fans of the run flat.

I LOVE my Odyseey. DH does, too. So much so that when our lease on our Murano is up, we are going to get a second one so we will be a 2-odyssey household.

I adore my Odyssey. I don't care one bit about driving a minivan. It isn't forever anyway. It is so easy to get the kids in and out. There is room for everything and we can travel with grandparents/uncles/etc. b/c of the 3rd row. When we used my cousin's Pilot with the car seats, the third row was so hard to access and the trunk was non existent. The car drives very nicely. I can't complain! I didn't want gray b/c there are a million out there. I love my midnight blue but it shows all the nicks from car doors being opened into it.

Re: Those who drive a Honda Odyssey please read...need feedback!

i had the 2011 toyota sienna awd and totaled the car 11 months later.
at the time i got a great deal on the sienna and wanted to get another one but i did NOT want the AWD at all. it was a big mistake getting it the first time. these cars are built low like a car not a suv and having a AWD will not make a big difference, however toyotas rates were crazy so we winded up getting the 2012 odessy.

the interior space wise in the trunk is the same - width is the same. the foldable seats are ALOT easier in the odyssey.

what i miss about my sienna = i liked that i could open the sliding back doors if i was sitting in the passenger front - the button was located on the top right next to the sunglass holder. Now its located for just the driver to have access to it.

I miss my standard back up camera.

I miss that the middle seats don't adjust further back - now my son is able to kick the front seat whereas in the sienna i had the seat pushed further back and he couldn't reach my seat to kick it.

what i like more about the odyssey: much easier to fold in the 3rd row seating, the bluetooth in definitely superior.
Gas mileage is awesome with the odyssey - however i can't really say the sienna was terrible bc it was awd and it wouldn't be fair comparing them while they aren't the same exact model. imo i think the odyssey drives better

the room in a minivan is awesome. the gas mileage is better than a suv, i was definitely a no way minivan mom but the space and room it offers along with the comfort made it an easy decision.

Re: Those who drive a Honda Odyssey please read...need feedback!

We got an Odyssey in January and I'm obsessed with it. LOL I really love it!
T
here are some things that annoy me - the alarm sets too quickly for me and the chirping when you open each door is sooo annoying (have to ask about this when I take it in for my first service).

Drives just like a car - I don't feel like I am driving a tank at all. We have the EX L with DVD and the kids LOVE the DVD and it really keeps them quiet. My older DD hates driving in DH's car and always requests mine now. I love the back up camera. Love that it has a USB hookup so I dont need an extra charger for my iphone and love how the car downloads all your phone contacts!

Thanks for this post! I am jealous of all you Odyssey owners Chat Icon

DH's car will be paid off soon, and I am hoping to get a 2012 as an end of year deal!!

Very interesting about Sienna's run-flat tires. I didn't know that. I was planning on comparing the two, just to have something to compare, but now I will probably skip it. Thanks!!!

Re: Those who drive a Honda Odyssey please read...need feedback!

Sorry to hijack, but we are looking at getting an Odyssey (by 5/1 when DH's lease is up) and I am curious to know what deals everyone is getting on them.

When we first looked at the Odyssey, the salesman rasn some #s and told us it would be ~$600+/month. We were blown away by that.

We are looking at the EXL (w/ DVD).

We want our monthly payments to be managable (~$400) and are open to lease or finance.

Thanks!

we didn't want the one with the dvd - i have 2 dvd players and ds is still rear facing so i put it behind his seat so he can see it.
i have the regular model - no leather - i did get microfiber seat covers and put a waterproof pad underneath in case the boys have an accident (which has happened with no issues - i just throw the covers and pad in the wash) i have the power sliding doors - not the power lift gate.

i leased and pay 370 - sign and drive - taxes rolled in just my first months payment.
for the upgraded model with leather and back up camera and dvds i was quoted 445
this was last month

We just got a pre-owned Sienna with AWD and I LOVE it. It was an easy transition from my Lexus RX. I couldn't see spending the amount they wanted for a new one (it's a minivan!) hence the pre-owned.

Some of my friends have had a lot of trouble with the Odyssey and the snow - one had to park at the train station and walk half a mile in a snow storm back to her house because it couldn't make it up her street Chat Icon Fortunately, she didn't have her two kids with her at the time. Another time, she got stuck in a snow bank and a stranger had to get in her car and get it out for her.

I know it's really a personal preference, but I wouldn't want to be driving something that heavy that isn't AWD.

Another thing to consider - although the Sienna AWD is more expensive, you will recoup that expense when you go to sell it (assuming you are purchasing and not leasing). The model we wanted is so hard to come by preowned that we looked for over a year before we found the one that we got. People who get them tend to hold on to them and when they do (rarely) become available, they sell really quickly.

I went from a CRV (drove for 9 years!) to an Odyssey last summer and I absolutely LOVE it. I don't miss the AWD compared to all of the perks of the minivan. I too said I'd never drive one, but they are really so awesome when you have kids.

Re: Those who drive a Honda Odyssey please read...need feedback!

We're having twins in June, and I'm thinking of getting a larger car. (I have a crv now)

Will most likely use the second row for the car seats. How convenient will it be if people need to get to the third row, and the second row seats won't fold?

How is the trunk space if the 3rd row is in use?

TIA!
