Those who exercise regularly...
How are your big toenails doing?
I've been playing a lot of tennis lately, and my big toenails are constantly breaking. I've heard runners have this issue sometimes, and I know there are a lot of runners on LIF.
Just wondering if I'm alone in this. Getting a pedicure today was a bit embarrassing!!

Re: Those who exercise regularly...
I imagine tennis would cause that. There's a lot of jarring movements forcing the toes to the front of the shoe. Tying your shoes tight might help.
I lose toenails when training for marathons, but not too often with lesser mileage.

Re: Those who exercise regularly...
I have lost toenails (on same toe) after running. My big toenails & pinkie toenails are warped, curve up at the corners. weird.

One of my big toenails does not grow anymore. I've lost one other toenail recently and another one is black. I do my own pedicures because I'm embarassed to go to a place.

Same problem here. Started when I was young from ballet. I actually cut my big toe nails as short as I possibly can and that seems to help a bit.

Re: Those who exercise regularly...
my pinky toe nails are permanently split in half - happened when i was 16 with tap shoes
my bunions are bad
without going any further - i'll just say i don't have the prettiest feet and always apologize to the person doing my pedicure

Re: Those who exercise regularly...
I play tennis regularly and run and I get more black toes from tennis than from running. I think it has to do with how the toes hit the top of the shoe. I don't do much about it, just paint right over it!

I tend not to have problems with my toenails but I have problems with calloused feet. My heels and the balls of my feet are calloused.

Re: Those who exercise regularly...
The guy who fit me for running shoes said to make sure you have enough room in the front of your shoes to avoid that problem. Most women wear their shoes fairly snuggly--there should be about a finger's width between your toe and the front of your shoe. It's possible that he's completely wrong, but I just thought I'd through that out there!

Re: Those who exercise regularly...
My toenails are fine, but I'm not a tennis player and my runs are fairly low mileage, so maybe that's why.

Re: Those who exercise regularly...
I've never been one for high heels or wearing uncomfortable shoes in the name of fashion, so my feet aren't that beat up. But I keep my toenails very short and don't do high impact stuff so they're fine.
However, I have noticed in recent years that my toe and fingernails have ridges in them, they're not completely smooth. I'm reading it could be due to a vitamin deficiency.

Re: Those who exercise regularly...
My big toe nails are disgusting. I've lost them both. gotten blister under them, which have created scars, which not makes them grow weirdly. When they do grow, they never get to grow enough before breaking or bruising.
I keep getting extensions on them when I get a pedi because i'm so embarassed by them! which in turn makes them worse, LOL.
