Re: Those who highlight their hair but also have greys
You need 2 treatments. First you do a single process color at the roots to cover the gray. Then wash and blow dry. THEN you do the highlights. If you have long or thick hair, it is a gigantic PIA and takes hours. Some places will do both treatments at the same time by filling in the gray roots between the foils. But many places insist on separately. Plus you are paying more. The end result is worth it but the time and money stinks.

My hair stylist does both at the same time, so it isn't that time consuming and I really love how it looks. She does the highlights in foil first and then works around them and brushes the base color on to the roots. They are washed out together. Soooo much better than doing them one at a time.

Re: Those who highlight their hair but also have greys
I’ve done it both ways- done all at once (highlights and then she put the hair dye around it on the rest of my hair) and as a two step process where she dyed my hair first and THEN highlighted. I found the longer, two step way, works so much better for me. Actually, the reason I ended up doing it that second way is because when I had it done all at once, I ended up back at the salon because I specifically wanted to do it that way to cover greys and it didn’t! The girl who fixed it asked why the other girl did it all at once.....
Just something to think about if you have some stubborn greys. I don’t have a lot (I haven’t had my hair colored since July and you can’t tell unless you look super closely), just annoying ones that bother me, particularly in the front. For all that money, I was so mad to get back in the car and still see those grey hairs peeking out. Once I switched to the other method the coverage was perfect.
Also, for what it’s worth, they charged the same both ways. You’re paying for a single process and highlights, whether that’s done at the same time or not should be irrelevant (at leas at my place).

This exactly when I get my hair done at the salon.

If they know what they're doing you can do it at the same time. Foils first, then color in between the foils. It's not good for the hair to dye it then bleach right over the dye

I'm not at the point of needing this yet but dread when I do. How often do you have to highlight then? Because I'm assuming it would be frequent to prevent grey roots but I was always told not to highlight more often than every 3 months.

I am almost all grey. I do it at the same time but only get the highlights done every other time. So I go every 4-5 weeks for roots only and then highlights every other time.

If you're less than 35% gray, highlights will cover and blend most of your grays. I have a decent amount of gray, but my stylist refuses to do a single process color on me yet. It's not really necessary. She does a little more than a 1/2 head of highlights and it covers all of my gray.

Re: Those who highlight their hair but also have greys
I have grey and highlights are enough so far to blend. When my roots grow in the grey is more noticeable against the dark hair. I should go over 3 months put dread going (I'm really low maintenance and its a process I don't love)
