Those who live where it's warm all year round...

HOW do you get into the holiday season? I mean it's still 75-80 degrees... sunshine... palm trees... I just can't get into it. It's our first holiday season in FL and i'm seeing all these posts about holiday shopping & cold weather and stuff and it's just wierd b/c I feel like it should be cold and I should be seeing trees with no leaves and people in heavy coats.

I am NOT complaining, the weather here is amazing right now...

We are going back to NY for a week for xmas though! Chat Icon

I cannot get into it AT ALL! it seems weird to me like the Twilight Zone! lol

What really gets me is all the WINTER clothing and boots at the malls. Who wears that in this weather? I'm still rocking tanks and flipflops! lol

I can't get into the holidays even with the cold weather. I would much rather be in the warm weather and not in the holiday spiritChat Icon

Yea I don't get that. They have puffy coats in abercrombie and most of the other stores. DH and I looked at eachother like... it gets THAT cold here??

But it is funny b/c my coworkers who are Floridians are already in pants, long sleeve shirts, boots... and here I am in capris, sandals and tanks still!

Re: Those who live where it's warm all year round...

I definately see your point, I dont think if i lived where it was warm it would be easy to get into the holiday spirit, but you are very lucky to live where it is warm all year long.

Its very cold here, i was sick, my fh was sick, my friends are sick, and i have to go and buy all warm stuff for winter wich stinks

I would rather be in capris and tank tops and sandals!!!

I don't get that either!

We had ONE cold day (low 60's) and people were flipping out because some hadn't brought their gloves or their coats! I just laughed lol

I've seen people with UGGs on too.. it's just so odd to me lol But i guess with time, I'll probably end up like them.

Re: Those who live where it's warm all year round...

Take it from someone who grew up in south Florida...it's extremely hard to get into the Christmas spirit when its hot outside.
And I think people are dressing warmly because they just want to fit in with the rest of the country. lol They never get to wear their warm clothes so if theres even so much as a brisk breeze, they're gonna be decked out in their "winter" clothes.
I hated every Christmas I spent in Florida. I always longed to be somewhere cold with snow. I felt like I missed so much when I was a kid because I never got to play in the snow or anything fun like that. I'm making up for it now thoughn now that I live in Wisconsin!

Re: Those who live where it's warm all year round...

It took a year or so to get used to, for me.

The first year, it felt SO weird!!! With no big change in the temperature, it did NOT feel like the holidays were really coming. The second year was a lot better, as the holiday season became more of a mental thing, and I stopped relying on the change of seasons to be indicators of upcoming celebrations.

Be prepared for the shock of the cold when you go back to NY for Christmas and aren't used to it anymore though! I always appreciate leaving the 30 degree weather there, and coming home to 70s and sunny! Chat Icon

I know! It always used to be the opposite, we'd come down to FL for a week in the winter and then have to go back to the cold... now we'll be happy to go back i'm sure.

Re: Those who live where it's warm all year round...

I'm out in AZ and it has been really tough to get into the holiday spirit without the cold. I so want to put on a comfy sweater, but it's still 90 degrees out. As for decorations, I see a lot of Santa's under Palm Trees and my father decorates his sauaro cactus with a hat, beard and sunglasses to look like santa. Some places even import snow for the kids. It's different, but they try.

Re: Those who live where it's warm all year round...

I used to live in AZ and loved the fact that I can eat turkey and open presents in jeans and a t-shirt and not be cold.
I had no problem getting into the spirit. I find nothing fun in bundling up just to not have your nose fall off and trying to get dressed nice and yet be warm.

It is definately a shocker to be decorating a palm tree with lights wearing shorts and a tank top Chat Icon

Right around this time till about January I get a little home sick, but on Christmas morning when I am outside sipping frozen hot chocolate and my family is sipping hot chocolate because it's frozen outside it makes it alll better Chat Icon

This year being your first year mightt be a little tough but you'll definately get used to it. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Those who live where it's warm all year round...

I lived in Key West for a few months. I arrived in Aug and left in Feb. It felt like it was Aug the whole time. It was cool to be at the pool on Thanksgiving and to be at the beach on CHRISTmas Eve, but it wasn't the sameChat Icon I cried like a baby when it snowed here in MI and it was a horrible holiday season for me. I LOVE winter, snow, and all of the holidays. I just couln't get into it. I had never seen holiday tank tops beforeChat Icon It felt like I missed the whole season. I would never go away some place warm for CHRISTmas again. Now some place snowy and coldChat Icon

Re: Those who live where it's warm all year round...

I have had one Xmas where it was warm. I cried. I couldn't get into the Xmas spirit and I missed my family. To make matters worse in this country it is the middle of the summer and temps can go to 100 at Xmas time. Also since it is the middle of the summer, it is just that the middle of the summer and the county goes on holiday. Things just aren't Christmas-sy here.

I am going to NY for a month for Xmas so I won't have to go thru that again this year.
