Those who shop for organic foods
Ok, so it looks like I have convince DH to go shopping one week at Trader Joes or Whole Foods. We will still spend our usual but one week out of the month we will shop organic. My question - I shop at Trader Joes for my DS now and buy mostly organic for him, but sometime I will just buy the non-organic brand because there is limited additives. Do you buy only organic stuff at these stores or do you also buy their normal non orgainic (but healthier then the average store brand). I am figuring I can strect a dollar by limiting the amount of organic and get "natural" meat and fish.
Discuss what you do.

Re: Those who shop for organic foods
I only buy organic milk.
Organic meat is expensive, I do buy Perdue and non organic meat occasionally.
I try to buy the most important things organic (stawberries, apples, red peppers, things off that top 10 list)...but if the store doesn't have organic strawberries I will buy the regular ones.
I figure, buying any amount of organic food is better than not!

Re: Those who shop for organic foods
I think the ingredients list/additives list is key.
some things, just b/c they aren't LABELED organic for whatever reason are just as good.
I want to know about hormones, antibiotics, injects etcetera...I want to know what the animal that my son is eating, ate. that type of thing.
I won't go out of my way to buy organic bananas and avocados...but I will not purchase apples, potatoes, tomatoes etc that aren't.
but there is a whole foods 2 blocks away from me in the city, and the stores we do our normal shop in (Hannaford upstate and Fairway in Brooklyn) have great selections anyway so we don't have too much of an issue.

ITA with this...there are certain things that I do buy for DD that are not organic at both TJ's and whole foods but I read the list of ingredients with a fine tooth comb...

What is it I should be looking for. I get the frozen vegetables and fruit and will usually buy if the only ingrediant is that particular fruit or veggie, but when it comes to meat. I see the natural and that it was raised on a vegetarian diet. Is this considered good. I am still learning all of this.

believe me so am I..the meat question is a good one..I tend to buy kosher organic meats at trader joes, they have the best prices, and kosher meat just tends to be "cleaner" for me..but I've also been raised in a semi kosher home, so maybe I'm biased As for frozen veggies etc..I like to just see the veggie/fruit in the ingredient list, I noticed that some of their veggies have sodium in it, which makes me Honestly I find that the people at TJ's and whole foods, esp more at TJ's are ULTRA helpful, and I'm always annoying them with questions and they're more than happy to help, so you can easily ask them anything...I'm by no means an expert and still find myself buying things that I'm not sure about

Re: Those who shop for organic foods
Musts for me are organic eggs and milk, because of how much we eat of it.
If I don't find organic, or its too pricey that week, I am very careful that chicken is hormone free and antibiotic free. Same for beef, but we don't eat beef that often.
We avoid farm raised fish, or fish imported from Asia.
As for veggies and fruits, I really try to look for what is in season and only buy produce grown in the US or Canada. Otherwise look for imported certified organic produce.

Re: Those who shop for organic foods
"vegetarian diet" is misleading, especially with beef.
look for grass, not corn, fed beef
